1st 20 minutes looked better, then well same old a few good chances but hopeless finishing, 2nd half bore draw.

Reza was pretty hopeless but Sordell frankly had a decent game. Good first touch and got involved. We missed Cousins strength in the middle. What has happened to Wiggo?? Looks like he is carrying some serious weight as well.
Got a 4 year contract and it's off down the cake shop!

Worse than that I reckon, he hasn't got over that long injury and may not in my opinion. Very questionable situation in my opinion.

  • Unlike others I'm keen on Rezza , I think he just needs to break his duck

My thoughts also, looks sharp with good movement (last night at least) and has a bit of skill. Needs a goal though.

My main worry overall last night was that the better performance (bar peter garland at left back - I liken his new contract to when some get comfortable in a relationship and the tubbster period begins) might have been players just playing for their places under Jose?

  • I really enjoyed it. I was quite surprised how different we were in terms of movement and tempo. I thought the interchanging of systems from 451 to 442 to 433 was impressive especially in the first half. Another day and a bit of luck we could have won by a couple of goals.
  • I thought we seemed to have a bit more threat going forward. Should have taken at eats 3 of the chances.

We began very brightly, passing and moving at a high tempo, the midfield threading accurate balls and delivering dangerous crosses to the strikers. Much better than we have played for ages. Reza has been unlucky: hitting the bar at Wigan, having our best shot tipped over at Sheffield United, and so close again last night. Ajdarevic is physically strong and mobile, and is able to cross and shoot well.

We ran out of steam in the second half and reverted to type. If Dyer picked the team, was he also responsible for the substitutions? Pritchard for Reza with 30 minutes left was a defensive swap when we should have been pressing for a win.
  • Would just like to say that I tought the ref was excellent. Let the game flow, didn't try to be teh centre of attention and got most of the decisions right. Was impressed by Scanell for them.
  • Dervite was outstanding last night - my MOM. Always in the right place.
  • Slightly better I thought unfortunate a few regulars didn't have there best game poyet, wiggins and Wilson. If we loaned in a decent winger would make the world of difference.

I am wondering if it would be easier to try and get a decent right back on loan to allow Wilson to push into right midfield as that is clearly his best position and offers a threat there. Good right wingers might be difficult to come by as they are just as sort after as good. proven strikers but I am guessing good defensive options may be easier to come by at this stage of the season.

    I have said it before but I would like to see this formation (4-2-3-1) as I think it suits the current personel that we have;

    Hamer
    Loan RB Morrison Dervite Wiggins
    Poyet Cousins
    Wilson Astrid Harriott
    Sordell/Loan Striker

Improvement from Sundays performance. Surprised and pleased with the starting line up. 4-2-3-1 system was there to get the best out of Ajdarevic who is our most gifted player. First 30 mins he was excellent but ran out of steam as the game went on. Thought we passed the ball better and quicker in the first half and the movement off the ball was 100 times better than sunday. Should have been at least one up by half time. Best game I have seen Sordell play. Looked lively and kept the ball well. Even tho I thought Reza looked lost out on the right hand side, I do think there is something about him where if we played him up top with a big centre forward (which we don't have) he could be effective.

Pointless bringing on Pritchard to play on the right hand side and we will destroy Cousins if we don't play him in the centre of midfield.

Need to bring in a right winger and forward in on loan ASAP.
  • No surprise if it was Dyer who picked that side, with all due respect to the guy, in terms of personnel and formation it was a pretty standard Powell type side - the kind I imagine the two of them were planning/working on with an eye to fixture pile-up. It was interesting that Pritchard came in presumably as a replacement for Hughes in terms of the role on the pitch they would take if coming on... I wonder if Hughes has not been a little too vociferous in protesting what happened with CP? (PURELY SPECULATION.)

Played well in first half --defo better team. Second was closer but we still had the two best chances to win it.

Sordell and the Church were on the own up front really with a combination (subs etc) of Reza, Pritchard,Cousins out wide---------this will NEVER work.

Jose looks far to much like Pardew.

Poyet ball to set up Sordell(who should have scored) was first class and not far behind was the ball that put Church through a forward that could actually move would have been in on goal---------------Poyet was easily the MoM for me.

    More positives than negatives

just seen the stats they had 11 shots do feck off 11 ?? think i need to se the definition of a shot from this puppet.

  • Showed up that we badly need a striker.
Thought Sordell was OK and unlucky not to score, but Reza too lightweight!
(is he the Conference standard player mentioned in Daily Mail?)
Cannot afford to play him at Millwall, he will be slaughtered and laughted at!
  • A more exciting performance in the first 30 minutes than we've seen for while. Good to see some shots, albeit not well directed ones. It all lapsed a bit after that, and I think we were lucky at times that Udders were no great shakes or we'd have got nothing from the game.
  • Posting without reading

Decent shift put in last night and we should've won.

Hamer didn't have his greatest game, Sordell had his best game

    MOM Dervite, he won everything

Powell would never have started with that side

Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know. It was Alex Dyer's team last night, might suggest it had at least been considered to play the 4-5-1 again.

It's my opinion, for what it's worth, that we'd have turned them over with Powell in charge. We'll never know. Time to move on though.
  • My view is that it's not so much a decent strike we need (though we do) but the lack of mobility in our midfield that's the real problem. We just can't break quickly enough and there's not enough link-up plpay between the forwards and the midfield.
  • a disappointing start under the new regime .. we need more than 1 point a game to get out from under. The Millwall game takes on huge significance

Had that game been one of the matches in Hand then I'd agree... As it is we're three points behind with twelve more points to play for... think we could afford to draw that (although yes it does put a bit of additional pressure on us getting something at Leeds and at home to Watford)

no mate I'm pretty sure it was Thuram who the club assessed at conference level which seems to be at odds with how well he was thought of in France - confusing!
  • Even if Sir Chris had picked that team, I think they played with a bit more positivity than we would have got with SCP. However, that may be because they were trying to impress the new guy.

Astrit Ajdarević was the only one to play with real class but sometimes drifted out of the game a little. He looked fitter than before, so maybe he'll be shipped back to Liege soon!

Marvin Sordell played well and should have scored.

Callum Harriott also played well, probably better than I've seen in quite some time.

Reza Ghoochannejhad had two chances to score, other than that looked lightweight and not suited to playing wide right where he has to put in a defensive shift.

Diego Poyet had possibly his worst game for us, getting booked for a horrible tackle and not moving the ball forwards quickly enough. Still, he's a young lad and that was, what, his tenth game? So, it's difficult to be too hard on the guy.

Michael Morrison and Dorian Dervit both had good games, restricting Huddersfield to mostly long range shots, none of which went in via a wicked deflection, thank [put your deity of choice here].

Royce Wiggins and Lawrie Wilson gave some good options going forwards. However, Royce had a bit of a bad time defensively and wasn't his usual positive self.

Ben Hamer did everything asked of him but gave me palpitations when he didn't come to collect a high looping ball in the second half.

Johnnie Jackson didn't threaten their goal and wasted quite a lot of corners that didn't get past the first defender, but he did everything asked of him in terms of tracking, tackling, moving the ball on, etc. so I'm glad he was there.

Bradley Pritchard seems to have recovered his confidence and looked much better than of late. He's not the solution to the wide right berth, though. I don't think anyone of our current squad is except maybe Wilson if we can get Chris Solly back at right back.

Simon Church and Jordan Cousins didn't have enough time to make an impact but I think Sordell at his best is a much better option than Church and Cousins shouldn't be playing anywhere else other than central midfield.

It's here actually "Yohann Thuram-Ulien was a Standard Liege goalkeeper so ordinary that coaches at his new club placed him at Conference level. When he was left out, Duchatelet demanded to know why.

Getting a good right back on loan is an excellent idea. Getting Chris Solly back fit would be great, of course.

This type of line-up is probably our best bet given the lack of quality forwards available.
  • It was reassuring to see CAST out last night. But they seem to have called for extra guidance!image

Looked a 4-5-1 to me, with Poyet holding, Jacko and AA ahead and Harriott and Reza playing from wide positions.

I think a 4-2-3-1 needs Cousins and Poyet playing in the holding two, 3 from AA, Jackson, Harriott, Reza and - on last night's showing - Sordell up front. We have pace down the flanks with the full backs, but it would need good discipline when we don't have the ball. Reza's positioning was very undisciplined last night - promise, but he plays for himself.

AA's fitness makes Peter Garland look like Mo Farah. He was blowing after 20 minutes.

The relative qualities of Sheffield United and Huddersfield apart (the former is streets ahead of the latter), the difference last night to our football was Marvin Sordell. He brought a degree of movement to the front line that was absolutely lacking on Sunday. But then I think the formation demands movement from the forwards anyway, particularly when you're on top possesion wise. Powell's Charlton has done ok with that formation too, of course.

Movement is a player thing, incidentally - Powell never sent his forwards out with instructions to stand still when we had the ball in midfield.
  • Pretty encouraged by last nights performance. We seemed to get the ball down and pass it on the ground more than we have done of late. First 25 minutes esp we looked good and played at a good tempo and were definitely on top. With all the corners we had we should have scored and made it count.
2nd half we faded a bit but we had played Sunday so maybe that was to be expected.
Same old story though we need a striker to stick the ball in the net or at least players not afraid to shoot.
Astrit looks our most creative player and him playing Sordell was a good move.
Was not impressed with Huddersfield they came for a point.
Thought the fans were good as made our point about CP with the minutes applause but then supported the team and the new manager.
Time will tell if it works out but am encouraged by what I saw last night. Some work on the training ground and hopefully more positive signs on Saturday.
For those of you disappointed with a draw last night we would have took 4 points from last toe home games.
There is no telling whether with CP as manager we would have won or not. It is not a guarantee that if he was still there we would have got 3 points.
From the sounds of the press conference afterwards and the face that Riga has not signed a contract have a feeling he is only keeping the seat warm for someone else to come in during the summer.
Let's stay positive though was not all doom and gloom last night and is not all doom and gloom around our club.
  • Echo what others have said. 1st half good, nice movement, dummies, overlaps, ball on ground and building from back.

3nd 45 we looked tired and a bit less confident.

Nice touch on 3 minutes and the first half there was quite a lot of singing to get behind the team

Sums it up for me. We were unlucky not to score in the first half (the Astrid header that hit Sordell when it was on the way in was soooo unlucky) and if we had got one I think we would have gone on to win.

I didn't like the fact that Riga's substitutions were more defensive than offensive, bearing in mind we need WINS now, but at least it gave us a point to build on.
