Trouble is we may have made those two Defensive subs and then we may have brought on Church in the closing minutes to run with the ball to the corner flag etc... OHHHH yes but we couldnt because Powell was forced into using one of his early subsitutions.... Or was it his fault that Wiggins had to be subbed off too
"KHA">A real backs-to-the-wall effort, especially in the second half. I thought the players gave their all, which, in all the circumstances, was as much as we could have hoped for. There were some positives and also some important negatives. Positives first:
1 Poyet. I thought he played with amazing maturity for his first start. He's a good holding player who also can pass. Probably MOM in my eyes.
2 Reza. For someone who hasn't played for two months I was very impressed. He's quick, well balanced, has good body strength, and is alert to what is going on around him.
3 JJ. Shouldn't have to include a good performance from JJ among the positives, given all he's done over the last few years. However, I've read so much about his legs having gone and his only being fit to be a sub, that I have to say, I saw no sign of that. He played 90 minutes, gave his all and was still going strong at the end. Maybe his lack of pace will need to be considered if we get some more midfield talent in, but for now we need him and all the organising and encouraging he does.
Negatives
1 Nego. Oh dear! If he plays in the next game I'll have to conclude that RD is picking the team.
2 Thuram. RD has really stuffed us here. He lends us a GK we don't need and sells one we do need. If he's in the team when Hamer is fit, then I'll know RD is picking the team.
3 Sordell. Yes, I know he took his goal confidently, but otherwise I saw nothing. I don't think it's that he doesn't care, as I've heard some say. He did his share of tracking back; it's just that he doesn't seem to have what it takes in his main duties.
That's enough, I think, except to say I had no problem with Powell's subs. There was no case to continue with two strikers when it was just one-way traffic, and AA wasn't able to do his full share of defensive duties towards the end. You could take the view that by bringing on attacking options we could have forced them back, but at the time that looked optimistic to say the least. It's easy to judge subs with hindsight; all I can say is that I was happy with them at the time.
Wellwickman Thanks for the perspective. Allowing Alnwick to leave is the strange move of the window. Cherries taken a punt on Kermo & gutted but unsurprised at losing Stephens. GK most important position on the pitch.
The Red Robin"> Doncaster unbeaten in five now, Wednesday pulling away and safe. It's going to be us or Millwall who fill that third from bottom place unless Blackpool keep sliding down the table
Methinks Holloway will get the wall working. We will stay up by default not design. CP could have banked more points prior to year end. Failure to do so will come back to haunt every addick.
I am getting tired of 'IFs' .. BUT .. IF Powell had the Millwall squad under his management (i.e. the Millwall squad was the CAFC squad), he would have it in comfortable mid table at least
Wellwickman Point made above is that Donny & Weds both markedly improved in the past month as have Millwall. Even Blackpool got rid of the incompetent Ince. Powell, no doubt busting a lung to inspire is still in situ purely due to ownership scenario. The abandonment also thankfully gave us 3 extra points masking the actual misery of our situation. I think it's a bit rich for people to have a go at RD after 2 league games. I'd be looking a little closer to home for the reasons not to be cheerful.
Those excellent travelling fans who were actually there, and supporting pretty well throughout, and who must have been gutted at the end, have written interesting reports. Very few if any seem to be calling for Powell to go
"Vincenzo" >Can't believe the stick Powell gets over subs. What do people think Mourinho would do with a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes to go away from home?Bring on some strikers. Mind you, what does he know, eh?
Wellwickman Grateful for small mercies. At least he made some prior to the 85th miniute, the usual performance at home. The concept of fresh legs alien in the first half of the season. Shame as we usually had a bench worthy of consideration.
glad I got to the end of this thread, the reports from those who saw the game have softened my mood a bit. Let's hope for some positivity and 3 points at The Valley next Saturday.

Time for a rant after trying to follow Charlton and Englands rugby team snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I'm not having a rant about Chris Powells use of subs. in this match because he would have been hailed as a tactical genius had the team held for another five minutes. Its not even worth using the excuse that the disruption to the side of the last 48 hours off the pitch, and the inclusion of youngsters and the injury to Wiggins, make it almost remarkable that we were on the point of winning a game that 90% of us had written off as a certain defeat. No - my rant is about the match thread on this site. Please, Please, in future lets leave the description of the match to seth plum and midland red. I, and i'm sure many others do not wish to hear about the progress or otherwise of past hero's who deserted us in our hour of need for life on the south coast, lets get over it. I also do not wish to read about how Mr Ping Pong - Sing Song - or even Frimpong are progressing after taking an early bath, lets try to forget him. I have the utmost sympathy for our first choice goalkeeper who now has to ply his trade in East London, very sad but lets get over it. I've given up listening to Emma's frivolous chit chat on Charlton live and i'm desperately trying to somewhere to follow sensible progress of the match. Please, please in future please lets have the match thread about those reporting the progress of the match . Rant over.

Today I was very pleased to shift over and let PaddyP17 carry the load.
We lost it with the subs. We needed attacking impetus with a flagging young side, not to invite them on by going 5-4-1. Before that things were a little grim but not terrible.
Pros: Lennon looked really good out of position against a top winger (and their only threat) throwing himself into great tackles that kept McMannaman under control. Poyet looks like a class player. Cool and collected for the entirety of the game. Only looked uncomfortable until we invited them onto us. I think if we started the next game with Poyet and Cousins in the middle (Rather than have him on the wing looking uncomfortable), JJ on the left and Green on the right we'd look much better. Reza is keen and hungry, I think he hit the bar in the first half but other people seem to think it was Adjarevic? I think after more time with the squad and fitness he could put some away for us. Nego looked good though definitely lightweight! Needs to get on the weights but seemed to know what he was doing.
Cons: Sordell took his goal well but was lazy and useless for the rest of the game. Not impressed at all. Adjarevic looked pretty non-descript to me. May come good yet but didn't seem much of anything to me. Thuram seemed to flap at most crosses. Didn't fill me with confidence. Creativity, we lacked it. Need a creative player in the middle to carve chances for someone like Reza to get on the end of (I hear Wes Hoolahan is out of favour at Norwich ...). But I think maybe Poyet could be that player with more experience/confidence, I don't know what his normal game is like. Gameplan. I know everyone's been banging on about it but I assure you if you were there you would all agree that to go into a 5-4-1 and invite them on to us for the last 15 when we were already a flaggin young side was just a terrible plan. We needed to bring Green and Church on to create some attacking impetus. We may not have lived out the time if we'd done that either but it was definitely the best play at that point in time.
Were going to league one It won't be any fun All our players r on loan But we must not moan Let's sell the good players we got Sorry Charlton but that our lot

There's actually some very mixed reviews on the Player Marks thread.
Sounds like Poyet did well and I'd like to see AA dropped with Poyet and Cousins in the middle - possibly with JJ out wide for the time being. Sounds like Wilson will have to drop to right back while Solly is out but I'd have him pushed up in midfield with everyone fit. Bring Green in for now, he's performed well when he's played for us this season.
Just seen the goals. I'm basing this on the 'Boro game as well:
There are bigger problems with Thuram than his insistence on punching (I'd call it flapping). He should have done better with both goals, especially the second. Absolutely shocking. He plays like you do when it's your turn to go in goal during a five-a-side, I.e. Clueless. Not a natural keeper. Hamer can't come back soon enough.

At approx. 4.40, knowing Charlton were 1-0 up, I put the TV on for Final Score. No sooner had the picture appeared, the announcer said that Wigan had equalised. The next thing he told me was that they had scored again. The Off button was then put to good use.
Does the road go up hill all the way? Yes, all the way.

Always good to win late on... #wafc. Entertainment provided by Charlton goalie...this guy should be in circus
That Charlton keeper had a whole new style of goal keeping. Don't think it will catch on
Yohann Thuram-Ulien. Is he actually a 'keeper or just playing there because you've got no one else?
That Charlton keeper is Lilian Thuram's cousin. Lilian is probably the better goalkeeper
Sat near Charlton fans in pub. Apparently they deserved to win. We battered them with 28shots. They have their keeper to thank
Great second half response today. How that Charlton keeper is a professional football though i'll never know
That Charlton keeper has got to be one of the worst I have ever seen, outfield players have had better games in goal when forced to go in
Charlton, you must have someone better than that keeper!? Not to mention your woeful right back. Keep the Belgian away from transfers
That Charlton keeper was...eccentric, to put it lightly. Not sure he even knew what was going on half the time

Chrissy Powell's red army was sung loud and clear for a long time.
I fear Chris Powell will not have his red army for much longer!
Spent the whole of the second half trying to defend a 1-0 lead, if we are being truthful Wigan could have scored 10!
We are in serious trouble and if we don't sign two decent midfielders and a winger as soon as the loan window opens we will be relegated.
Does the road go up hill all the way? Yes, all the way.
