Back from the game. Very much agree with the observations of Siv and others. Some thoughts:
I was amazed at the attitude of the players today - Okay, we lost, but they were really up for it (even Sordell, for the most part) and CP deserves credit for this. It was all a bit disorganised when we found ourselves in an attacking position with lots of attacks petering out to nothing with a bad pass - but what else should we expect from a team full of players that barely know each other? Some very encouraging performances today, despite the result. It can't have been easy for the likes of Nego, being thrown in at the deep end against a good team away from home, but I thought he did really well. Poyet clearly has class and could be a key player for us - lots of maturity and intelligence for his age. Astrit gave his all and was knackered towards the end. Lennon did very well, under the circumstances. Yohan the GK indeed likes a punch, which tends to make things interesting...to be fair to him, though, he did well until the dam broke in the last five minutes. Reza played well and was exciting, however he got knocked off the ball a lot and the ref (who gave us virtually nothing all game, I might add) was not interested. He will mostly certainly have to learn to adjust to the rough and tumble of this league. He was up for it, though and a tricky customer - I'm looking forward to seeing more from him. Shame not to see Pietr today, but I have a good feeling about our two exotic new strikers. Wiggy getting injured today was crucial. We needed to put Church on very late in the game to give us an outlet, but we had run out of subs. Should he have put him on instead of Dervite? Maybe. The deflation of conceding an equaliser made the winner almost inevitable; not least because we were playing attack vs defence for the last 10 minutes.
Great support today and up until the last ten minutes or so (including a great new 'Gooch/CP' chant - although I would prefer that they call him Reza, as he does himself), it was really buzzing. Honestly did not hear the Wigan fans at all until they scored and then they woke up. A bit pathetic, really.
Overall, gutting to lose in the way we did, but I expected a right shoe-ing, which didn't happen. This performance and the fight in the players today actually gives me grounds for real optimism as when they get to know each other a bit better and we get a couple more loans in, we could be fine. I hope.
Don't give up people, we're not done yet.
WOW ! The great posts keep coming ! ( from those at the game )
Sorry Fanny. I think this is a put down response. In this day and age people can make quite an informed decision on how a game has gone by not actually being at the game. It does not preclude them from having an opinion.

Ok Rob, I'll give you a view from someone not there. Look at the team:
Goalie - 2nd game for us RB - 1st game for us and about his 21st ever pro game LB after 5 mins - 3rd ever pro game, out of position Midfield: one pro debut, one in his first pro season, one making his second start for us having barely played this season Up front: striker making his debut not having played since Nov
If this was first match of season we'd be pretty positive by the potential there. Shows incredible team spirit that we were in the lead for 85 mins...and some credit for that has to go to manager and coaching team who have just had one hell of a week...or are we not allowed semi positive / realistic posts if we weren't there?
There is no way on earth anyone can have a decent opinion on how a game played out unless you were there or it was on tv
You can have a decent opinion on the result and the feelings u have after it but you can not say we were pathetic or shit just like you can't say we were awsome
Shit result poor decisons from the mgr you can call
But no way can you form an opinion on the game from the radio
Especially when that useless bitch emma is doing it I mean coronation street wtf
There is no doubt whatsoever that CP is respected by players. His record is probably the third best in our history. The performance today in almost getting something from todays game was way beyond most peoples expectations. He has a better chance than anybody of staying up, "hopefully"

Sorry Fanny. I think this is a put down response. In this day and age people can make quite an informed decision on how a game has gone by not actually being at the game. It does not preclude them from having an opinion.
Solly.
What I meant was that the posts from those in attendance today were inevitably more detailed & hence reflected my views on the whole.
Of course those reading the posts or listening to the game from home can have opinions on "how a game has gone by" .
I was merely indicating that the post I have quoted mirrors my views ie we "saw" the performance in the same way. Perhaps I should have used the word "report" instead of post ?
I'm always the first to admit that I am very fortunate to be able to attend most away games but that in no way makes me a better/more loyal supporter than those who cannot do so.
TBH you might cut me some slack here - travelling hundreds of miles, shouting & clapping for 90+ minutes & arriving home tired & emotional makes an old Fanny somewhat careless with the words she uses.
Weegie - if you look at my previous posts you'll see that I've more or less always been positive. I think I may be starting to hit the wall though. I just don't think that defending for 60 minutes against a team with the attacking attributes that Wigan possess is a good way of hanging on to a 1-0 lead. And this is by no means the first time we've approached a game in this way.
Fair enough, Rob - just think it is extremely noticeable on this thread that those there are much more positive than those not there, some of whom are verging on hysteria - just because it suits their anti Powell agenda. (Not suggesting you are among those.)
anti Powell agenda what rubbish, we love Charlton and want the best for the team. Look at the facts do you not watch the team every week we are where we are because we are a poor side and ultimately the manager has to take the blame. But hopefully it will be alright.
Some need to get this performance into perspective:
We were playing a vastly changed side from last time. The manager/rest of the team knew little about some of the players new players. My guess is that Powell had little say in all the changes. Preparation for the game must have been pretty disrupted during the week - when was Powell able to decide on his team, did he even have a chance Wigan had only lost 1 of their 11 previous games - and have an experienced and settled side We lost Wiggins after 8 minutes, his replacement is an inexperienced Centre Back Many of the team have little experience of Championship football We came very near to getting a result despite all the naysayers expecting that we would suffer a beating
SCP has shown enormous dignity and loyalty through all the goings on this week - and despite everything the team gave a well organised performance that nearly got a result away to a good team. The team spirit as ever looked to be very good. What do the critics want him to do walk on water.
I just hope the players have rather more confidence in themselves and the manager than the critics - otherwise we will definitely be relegated. Today told me that they do and we will be ok. New team - but the backbone is still there COYR.
This! And all of this changes next Saturday vs Birmingham: The team will be similar and will have had a week together. Parsysek available? Wilson available? Birmingham 1 win in 8
This absolutely. It's important for those who weren't there to know that the team seemed to be as united as ever despite all the changes, imposed or otherwise.
Just one further view on the game. As we left the ground, a Wigan fan said to us, "You didn't deserve that. I felt sorry for you and that doesn't happen often!"

Think it best I leave it at that tonight.
Fanny. I do respect that you go to many games, home and away. I think emotions are running a bit high at the moment for good reason. At the end of the day I think we all (most) want the same thing for Charlton. Cheers. :-)
Don't like posting on games I did not attend but even the scoreline looks like a miracle given what CP had to work with. The fact we were leading for 85 mins, even more so.
Just look at the quality and experience of each player in those two teams and anyone would have predicted a heavy thrashing . How many of our players would make the Wigan squad, never mind their bench?
Overall we are now significantly weaker than when we won League 1 and that is where we are heading back to .
We will fight to the death with pride and professionalism under Chris Powell or go out with a whimper under anyone else. Sadly, though, the outcome is inevitable unless the team is strengthened or at least sold players are replaced
Gutted/fed up/cheated/deflated/.... what other words do you need?
Ok, for most of the game, i thought it was men against boys out there, but hoped that we could hang on and gain an unexpected and maybe undeserved 3 points (and, by god, we need them) but we just couldnt hold the tide back any more.
I'm not sure if it was that Wigan were that good (maybe they were) - but i just dont understand the tactic of just giving their midfield all the ball with all the time they wanted to spray it around. It had to come unstuck (even with the charmed life that our goal seemed to be having) . Just felt it had to give and cruelly it did.
We looked so lightweight it was untrue, but that is to be expected given the circumstances of the last few days - and i dont think we managed a shot at all )whether on or off target) in the second half.
Overall, a gutsy/promising performance with our backs against the wall for most of the game - but the gulf was obvious - in the second half it felt like Andorra playing Spain with Andorra holding a lucky lead but being pummelled all 2nd half.
Its gonna be a long season - cant really see us surviving if this is our first team to play most weeks- the gulf in experience/nous/know how and muscle was there for all to see today.
I'm very happy to hear Poyet managed to impress a lot today as well! Not being able to watch any games, only listening to the radio feed and watching the shortlength highlights, makes it quite hard to draw a picture of different player's attributes, escpecially if they don't have videos on youtube like for instance Piotr or Reza. Would anybody like to maybe write a few words about his style of play and first impressions on his first games for the team - I would be very grateful!
I put off reading this after-match thread dreading it would be full of negative criticism and calls for Powell out. Surprised and delighted to read the feedback from the fans who were at the game. Much to be encouraged about, Poyet in particular, which engenders hope for better results from the remaining games after the team has had more time to gel. However, Thuram sounds like a big worry and it will be very unfair if Powell is put under pressure to play him when Hamer is fit again as has been hinted.
Can't believe some of the critcisms on here about "the stats tell the story" etc. How quickly have some forgotten that for sizeable parts of this season we have been without our regular, and most influential players. Solly, Wiggins, Yann, Cort have all had long periods out and this had had a major impact on our team balance and points tally. Coupled with no investmant from the prevoius owners has meant we have been forced to rely on a very thin squad to fill in behind until the players could return from their injuries. Very hard for any manager to amass points when fully occupied finding sticking plaster just to get a team out every Saturday.
The good news is that most of the new players appear to have had good starts and this can only improve as time goes on. I am optimistic after the past week of turmoil and believe we can pull away from the relegation zone over the coming weeks. Just hope, like others, that we can strenghten the the team further when the loan window opens to provide a little more balance.
From almost slitting my wrists during last week, I am beginning to feel more positive and that feels good.
So, we sell our best striker, midfielder, and keeper a couple of days before the match against Wigan. A lot of people were predicting we lose by a wide margin. CP has to select a team based on what he has...... strangers and youth players. After 5 minutes Wiggins goes off injured. We battle hard and manage to hold on to the lead until the 88th minute. Well, the rest is history. I certainly don't blame CP for this result or his tactics. Wigan put a couple of forwards on for the last few minutes. Who was going to mark these? Obvious choice is a defender. As it was Dervite and "we always lose when Dervite is used as a sub" the CP out brigade were in their element when Wigan scored. Sorry, but I am entitled to my opinion and am taking positive thoughts away from this result. I really hope CP stays as I think he can dig us out of this mess, working with both hands tied behind his back. He certainly has my 100% support!!
Regardless if Hamer is fit Powell should drop Thuram on Saturday. If that means playing Phillips, then so be it. He needs to remind RD that he's in charge and won't play a keeper he didn't want or need and had no say in signing. Shoot me down all you like for this, I don't care. If some of you are happy for RD to pick them the team or delude yourselves that Powell wanted Thuram then you're fools.
J was it real pony performance and was the goalie shite
How did poyet do and reza
But I aint got a clue who this wall lot are do u
Poor going forward mate 1st half did ok gooch hit the bar with a screamer , 2nd half we was really under the cosh last 15 we got battered , should have put church on to give us an outball didnt happen we went defensive bringing on dervite , keeper not for me didnt catch anything ,even when ball came low instead of gathering he used his legs , poyet did ok seen him play twice in the 1st team i like the way he plays nice and simple , reza did ok he suprised me hopefully make me eat humble pie , definately some more players coming in mate see some of backroom staff at station and from what they said we will be seeing more additions.

Goalie - 2nd game for us
RB - 1st game for us and about his 21st ever pro game
LB after 5 mins - 3rd ever pro game, out of position
Midfield: one pro debut, one in his first pro season, one making his second start for us having barely played this season
Up front: striker making his debut not having played since Nov

Having got the early goal, I thought we played some decent stuff but they gradually took control and never lost it.
We defended like tigers - there was no lack of spirit in the team but just ran out of steam.
Midway through the second half I said to my lad that if they equalise they will score a second and so it proved.
This team needs to gel quickly.
