  • Powell's comments on the goals are interesting. He knows Thuram was the problem.
  • we need stability, not panic, we've had some major changes in management and playing staff give the man some time to gel the new team together and give him your support.... too many rumours and assumptions here just stirring it up.....
  • Disappointing to lose after leading for that long but it will take the team time to gel. Sounds like there were some positives. Hopefully after a week of training we can gel a bit more and get the win that we badly need.
Hope we play the two new forwards up front on Saturday and actually go for the win as we badly need it.

  • Finally, a few comments on yesterday's performance as befits this thread. For what it's worth, I came away from the cold, wet & windy north with more positives than negatives. Compared with the Donny debacle, this was 100 times better - far more movement off the ball, cleaner/crisper passing when we were in possession & more fight from everyone in the red shirt. I was quietly impressed with the recent additions to the squad in the outfield, with young Diego's full debut and with Marvin- best I've seen him play thus far & a well deserved goal. As SO many others have stated already, the negative was falling back and trying to park the bus late on but hindsight is a wonderful thing & the early forced substitution gave the gaffer fewer options than he would have hoped for at that stage. This set of players fought hard to protect the lead , be in no doubt of that but although we needed the new recruits to hit the ground running, this was always going to be a difficult one. Let's not forget our opponents are the FA Cup holders & still drinking at the fountain of milk & money which is the legacy of their Premiership days. This was always going to be a steep mountain to conquer & for 80+ minutes we were in sight of the summit....

    .

Sorry Fanny have to take issue with you here, 'parking the bus late on', we did it for the whole of the second half and showed absolutely nothing. Wigan could have quite easily put 10 past us yesterday, we were so inferior to them.

Plenty have said that yesterday was a battling, courageous performance, but for me football is about two teams trying to outwit, outplay and outperform each other. Yesterday there was one team playing football and one that had dug in at the trenches hoping to survive, it was never going to happen.

Excuses can be made for new players bedding in, youngsters coming into the team, blah, blah, blah, but I cannot see where our next point is coming from we were so poor!

Many on here have blind faith in support of CP and to be honest, I have been hoping that over the past few months that he would turn it around. Chris is a smashing bloke and I loved him as a player, but unfortunately his time is up. Our football this season has been awful and some of his decisions bizarre, even yesterday, he played Cousins on the right wing and when he eventually moved him inside brought on Pritchard instead of Green.

Love the man and thanks for getting us out of L1, but unless someone else is brought in very quickly to change this situation around, we are definitely going down!
  • Was Cousins really playing on the right? From the commentary it sounded like we were playing a diamond midfield.

Definitely playing on the right, our best CM playing out of position!

  • People on this site asking for a change in manager should stop and think. It will be someone of Roland's choosing , a coach that will probably not have much of a say in player recruitment. It maybe a yes man , i'm not sure how much RD gets involved , but if a manager feels pressurised to use players from RD's teams it is a recipe for disaster. No good manager will come to CAFC if they think there will be any interference from the Chairman regarding team selection.

Not sure where to post this, but don't want to open another CP thread, so will dump it here. Interviewed after the game CP looked awful and I worry for his health. In the early 90's I got a job which ultimately turned into a nightmare, I did not get the support of my MD and he waged a campaign to undermine me (including overt bullying) and get rid of me, this affected my self confidence and ultimately my health, I did not sleep could not eat and I looked worse than death warmed up. Eventually I came to an agreement with my employers and walked away. Last night Chris looked like I felt. he is up against a lot and has had a pretty torrid 18 months. I hope that yesterday he was only showing the effects of the game after a hectic few weeks, but if it is what I was suffering from, I do hope he walks before his health and his family suffer. It took me 18 months to recover from my experience and some scars never heal.

Can someone tell me why we let Ben Alnwick go?
As a season ticket holder have not seem him have a bad game.
Perhaps Richard Murray can explain, that's if he has any say at the club still.
Really feel sorry for Chris Powell and hope he can turn this round despite the new owners!

This is the 'Moneyball' tactic ... (if you saw the movie/read the book) .. the owner/general manager, when he disagreed with the team manager's selections, merely move the player in question on to another club .. if the owner wants someone in the side but does not want to sack the manager .. just move the disputed player out the door ... selection problem solved .. I wonder if both our ex Keepers, Alnwick & Button will be playing in the Champ next season and our new 'star' keeper will be down in the 1st
This is spot on and how it will be from now on.

The continental style of management allied to the Moneyball concept. Whoever picks the team is the coach and the management chooses the players. If we are still losing 7 mill a year RD is setting about reducing overheads.

I doubt if CP will fall into line with this way of working. IMO he's working out his contract and the new coach will be in during the summer.

The squad as it looks at the moment is heading for League One.

I sympathise with your personal previous employment problems.
Football management is a stressful occupation and I am sure that anyone who goes into the profession is aware of that. The sacking and those who fall by the wayside rate is there for all to see. Football management is no occupation for shrinking violets or those of a nervous disposition. Managers enjoy the adulation and respect that success brings, they must expect contrary abuse, uncertainty, disappointment and disrespect. Not nice, but there you go, it's par for the course.
As far back as the 1960s, there have been reports of managerial nervous breakdowns, Joe Mercer for example.
I don't see Chris Powell as an overly nervous or vulnerable individual. He obviously cares about CAFC and it must be painful to see all his good work go down the drain. Many people with mortgages and families have lost their jobs in recent times, jobs to which they were devoted. I am sure that many of such people's predicament are far worse than that in which Chris Powell finds himself.
I suspect that Powell's tenure at CAFC will last no longer than the next close season. I will be sorry to see him go and wish him all the best in the future, short and long term. However, as stated above, he went into the job with eyes wide open. As was said in a different context, most football managerial jobs end in failure and disappointment.

The Moneyball approach is based on in-depth data and statistics which influenced player recruitment. It wasn't based on an owner farming out rejects from one of his other sports teams to the other. It wasn't based on getting rid of the three best players and not replacing them. It wasn't based on undermining the head coach. This is not a Moneyball approach. I doubt RD has ever heard of it.

As I understand it the Alnwick and Kermorgant deals would be viewed positively within the money ball concept.

Both players were signed on frees , did a good job for us and have now been sold for some sort of fee. We probably made money on Stephens also.

At the start of last week I was resigned to losing Stephens , felt it was inevitable that Yann would go but hoped Wiggins would stay.
The sale of Alnwick was a bolt out of the blue and it particularly concerns me that Hamer is still out injured and Pope is on loan.

Don't laugh but maybe we need another keeper on loan as cover because I do not think we can recall Pope because the rules are different to when he was on a 28 day loan.

  • Steve that's very good to hear so I take it those slating loic wernt there
  • Alnwick, Kermorgant and Stephens luck has not changed all on losing sides this weekend.

If we got anything for Alnwick, and it's a big if, it would have been peanuts. He's gone to League 1 Orient on a contract to the end of the season for gawds sake. Alnwick was only moved on so that CP didn't have the option of selecting him against RDs wishes as he had at Doncaster. That's it. When Hamer is fit the best gp he can hope for us warming the bench. We need to comfort ourselves that Thuram is only on loan however I am reserving judgement until I have actually seen him play rather than rely on the opinions of others who said he is shit and at the same time insist Wilson is shit too.

  • Bless Chris Powell. Just watched the pre match interview. Only we can help and save chris by getting behind him and the boss Saturday. Chrissy powells red and white army
  • I really feel for Chris. He is under tremendous pressure. I do wish he could get his subs and tactics right though.

Definitely playing on the right, our best CM playing out of position!

Unfortunately, this is something Powell seems to be quite keen on over last season and this. I know people don't rate Green, but I'm all for having players play in their natural positions. I think when Wilson comes back from suspension, he'll be right wing, Nego right back. But it is frustrating because how many times did we have to put up with Pritchard out on the right. Similar problem on the left. Harriott is out of favour, so we have a number of different options being tested. Stewart was a naturally wide player, but we had to put up with him playing on the left as a right footer. I still back Powell as I believe he's a good manager who has had little chance to improve the squad from last season due to the ownership issues, however, some of his choices do frustrate me. In addition, his faith in players like Church, Jackson & Dervite is also frustrating.
  • Got in the ground early and we saw the keepers warming up , admittedly the crosses weren't of the greatest quality coming in from Roberts but everyone Thuram caught but what's the point of that if in the match he's gonna punch everyone
Even my 8 year old pointed that out

Yes, I noticed that too. I guess he doesn't have the confidence to do it when there are bodies putting him under pressure.

Our good run last year came with Pritchard on the right. Might not have worked this season, and isn't the type of player people want to see on the wing, but it did work last season.

Personally I thought Stewart looked more of a threat on the left where he could cut in and shoot with his right. I don't think it was clear what side best suited him.

That's not to say he's never got it wrong, but I don't think he's as bad as made out when it comes to playing players out of position.
