Regardless if Hamer is fit Powell should drop Thuram on Saturday. If that means playing Phillips, then so be it. He needs to remind RD that he's in charge and won't play a keeper he didn't want or need and had no say in signing. Shoot me down all you like for this, I don't care. If some of you are happy for RD to pick them the team or delude yourselves that Powell wanted Thuram then you're fools.
Problem is that the club won't function if the manager and owner are at odds with each other and there will only, ever, be one winner if those two fall out.
Don't like posting on games I did not attend but even the scoreline looks like a miracle given what CP had to work with. The fact we were leading for 85 mins, even more so.
Just look at the quality and experience of each player in those two teams and anyone would have predicted a heavy thrashing . How many of our players would make the Wigan squad, never mind their bench?
Overall we are now significantly weaker than when we won League 1 and that is where we are heading back to .
We will fight to the death with pride and professionalism under Chris Powell or go out with a whimper under anyone else. Sadly, though, the outcome is inevitable unless the team is strengthened or at least sold players are replaced
Got in the ground early and we saw the keepers warming up , admittedly the crosses weren't of the greatest quality coming in from Roberts but everyone Thuram caught but what's the point of that if in the match he's gonna punch everyone Even my 8 year old pointed that out
Love Powell to pieces but he really got it wrong yesterday. Asking them to sit back and defend a one nil lead with 25 minutes to go was not right. We were really in the game at that point and looked really dangerous going forward. Taking Sordell off for Pritchard was bad decision!
What I didn't like was at full time that Pratt who ran across and started booing the team at the final whistle in front of me. What a bell end!! Thought they all worked hard and deserved better. Encouraging performances and Powell will need to pick them up. Just got his tactics wrong yesterday. He is still a young manager and I support him 100%. Great support up there yesterday, well done to all that travelled.

So be it. Powell leaves with his reputation and dignity intact.
Its in his mind 24/7 "should he walk or will he get the sack" -----------the dignity of the man says walk----------------his mortgage and family say get fired. No wonder he looks shattered.
Thing is if we had gone a goal down in 3 mins and 2 down at half time none of us would have been surprised. If we had then had a go , got a goal back and been knocking on the door for a second then it would have been seen as a positive.
I'm amazed Powell is still here and his stress levels must be through the roof. New owner should either get rid or back him to the end of the season. Everyone else who is struggling, apart from Bolton, has at least been more decisive. Hope CP stays and keeps us up - if he goes I think whoever replaces him will struggle with our current setup given the number of changes made. If we can stay up this season I feel optimistic that things will improve once the team/squad settles down.
You could have been mistaken for thinking Thuram was an outfield player who had been stuck in and told to "just do your best''. Honestly thought it was the most unconvincing display from a keeper I have ever seen.
Just looking at our fixtures in next few weeks. We still have to play a lot of the teams around us. Brum (who were shocking in November at at Andrew) and barnsley this month. Millwall and Bolton next month. Bournemouth and Yeovil all still to play too! We can do this
I went with a wigan fan and as the ticket was a freebie I sat in with the home fans. Most around us knew my mate so knew I was Charlton. Wigan fans I was talking to all agreed our goalie had a strange way of performing. They were well aware of our put together team and plight in the league and in the circumstances thought we played well (bearing in mind their quality) and actually felt we did not deserve that double kick in the bollocks at the very end of the game.
Yes I know we did sit back a bit too much but overall I took far more positives out of that game than negatives.
Concerned for CP after reading he did not acknowledge the fans after the match on Saturday. Also the quotes that he looked "absolutely shattered" when interviewed. Not surprised however as he would have felt more gutted than all of us after the way the game ended. This is not the Powell we know. The pressure on him must be immense and I, for one, can't wait to see that huge smile on his face again when the results turn and the points push us away from the bottom of the table. It will happen after he is allowed to bring in HIS loans in a weeks time and he is given the opportunity to mould them into a force able to maintain Championship status. I hope RD gives him the chance as I am confident he can/will do it with the support he needs. I also quietly hope that Richard Murrray is (behind the scenes) providing CP with some moral support at this time as he looks like he needs it. RM will know that a replacement manager is not the answer to the current problems and CPs man-management is going to be vital. Let's see what a month can do to change things round.

How many of us were there? Thought our crowd was brilliant yesterday
Don't even know what to think tbh. Before the game I was happy to write the game off, after 85 minutes I'm desperate to win but then hear that Dervite is coming on. I then fully expect us to concede and within minutes we're 2-1 down. I want Powell to stay and do a good job but you have to question if he's ever going to learn, he seems to make the same mistakes a hell of a lot. Saying that I do feel he get's the lads to play for him and perform at their best, he just ruins it with dodgy subs and negative tactics.
This ! He is obviously great at man management & creating a great team spirit but his subs & tactics are dreadful. I think he'd be a better assistant manager.
we are forgetting its not him who gives away a freekick, and it wasnt one of his subs either, and its not him who lines up a wall or goes in the wall. Some need to cut him some slack as we would be worse off and have less hope without him IMO.
I think we will stay up. I ran through all the fixtures on the long train home yesterday and despite being pessimistic for our fixtures and optimistic for our rivals, it seemed and i hope that Yeovil, Barnsley and one of Doncaster/millwall should perform worse than us given our respective run ins.
We are due a change in fortune soon, i know it is said you make your own luck but ive been reading, qpr and now wigan away and against all the prem teams we could have easily warranted a point. Something be it a deflected shot or penalty or last minute winner just needs to go for us. Hopefully starting saturday!
Are there any photos of all the fans at the game? We constantly get slated on 'football away days' but they take the bloody picture an hour before kick off! They reckon this was the support from yesterday
Can someone tell me why we let Ben Alnwick go? As a season ticket holder have not seem him have a bad game. Perhaps Richard Murray can explain, that's if he has any say at the club still. Really feel sorry for Chris Powell and hope he can turn this round despite the new owners!

Quite simple, I think: Roly Poly wants Thuram in the team, so by selling Alnwick, Powell was left with no choice.

This is the 'Moneyball' tactic ... (if you saw the movie/read the book) .. the owner/general manager, when he disagreed with the team manager's selections, merely move the player in question on to another club .. if the owner wants someone in the side but does not want to sack the manager .. just move the disputed player out the door ... selection problem solved .. I wonder if both our ex Keepers, Alnwick & Button will be playing in the Champ next season and our new 'star' keeper will be down in the 1st
Ah screw this forum for tonight, all these people coming out of the woodwork and having a dig to vent frustration. Grow some balls, We're in a relegation battle with a small and limited squad and we don't need any bottlers. If you can't stick with the team in this transitional and tough time fore every one then shame on you. Some of the posters on here jump on the bandwagon more than a Millwall cup run!
We could quite easily have got away with it today and the last five minutes could have continued just as it was going for the previous 85 or so, this thread would have said things like "what a masterstroke by RD" and "Powell has really got this side to come together quickly". It didn't and it's a shame. Those five minutes could have gone either way but shit happens, especially when you're at the bottom. But we go again next week, and we will continue to do so whatever.
We are where we are for a reason, but I don't believe that that reason is Chris Powell. This club has just undergone a takeover after some "questionable" ownership before hand and these are the very first stages in that redevelopment. Also think that Standard Liege were not happy with the opening stages of their takeover, look where they are now.
You can't blame Powell for the midfield options we have, available CM options off the bench were Hughes (conceded two when he came on V Yeovil) and Pritchard (out of sorts). His hands are tied and I worry if you can't see that.
Just getting myself wound up now, I'll leave it at that for tonight.
Get behind the boys and try and stick with them as they try and salvage this season so we can have a good go at the league next season!
Think your right I was gutted coming out the ground yesterday but I really dont think the players could have given anymore. Defeats like this hurt more sometimes than getting caned as we came so close. There are plenty of points to play for and I think the spirit we showed yesterday will see us through,so nows not the time to look for people to blame and just get behind the team.
Negative subs didn't help Powell's case at all but I thought we defended well and actually played some really really nice stuff. The second Dervite came on it was clear what the game plan was, just wish we could hold on to the ball when a goal up and not the let pressure get to us.
Just caught up with the posts made since I fell into my bed late last night & so pleased to read that the majority are positive and say the same things. Feel shattered this morning , a bit tearful ( far too old for PMT !) & not totally sure why. I realise now that my emotions forced their way to the forefront when I arrived home yesterday hence my posts were somewhat unFannylike , so apologies if I upset anyone - that was not my intention.
In the clear light of day ( but with NO rain, am I still dreaming ??) my thoughts are firmly in one place - with Chris Powell. If we, the travelling fans were gutted by the finale at the DW, I can't imagine how he must have felt. Yes, uncharacteristically, he didn't come over to acknowledge us which is unusual but mirrors the Donny game. Two matches which might have reduced a less committed, honest man to a gibbering idiot. What he is feeling today, I cannot imagine. I am certain though that he is hurting & that maybe this is the time for one of the biggest decision of his life. I don't have to tell you how much I admire & respect this man - that's old news - & how much I hope that he makes the decision that's right for him and his family. It goes without saying that I hope with all my heart he decides to dig in and repel all boarders at whatever the personal cost might be but that's just me being selfish. We owe this guy SO much & not even his worst critic could accuse him of failing to have this Club of ours in his heart and of working his wotsits off to make it successful. But lack of financial support of late from the former regime & the arrival of RD with a new ( and possibly perplexing) way of conducting his business have presented our man with a set of challenges that could be one bridge too far. He may be doubting his strength & ability to deal with decisions made against his better judgement as the recent transfer window may have illustrated. His loyalty to his players will be at the forefront of his mind & he may question whether he has let them down. However, he might be relishing those challenges with the determination to turn things around against all odds ...we can only support him to the hilt starting on Saturday.
I just pray that if he decides to fight on, this will be the correct decision for him - that he will be afforded the respect/thanks he richly deserves by everyone connected with our Club and that he will hold his head up high whatever the outcome. A lesser man would have walked away months ago....
Finally, a few comments on yesterday's performance as befits this thread. For what it's worth, I came away from the cold, wet & windy north with more positives than negatives. Compared with the Donny debacle, this was 100 times better - far more movement off the ball, cleaner/crisper passing when we were in possession & more fight from everyone in the red shirt. I was quietly impressed with the recent additions to the squad in the outfield, with young Diego's full debut and with Marvin- best I've seen him play thus far & a well deserved goal. As SO many others have stated already, the negative was falling back and trying to park the bus late on but hindsight is a wonderful thing & the early forced substitution gave the gaffer fewer options than he would have hoped for at that stage. This set of players fought hard to protect the lead , be in no doubt of that but although we needed the new recruits to hit the ground running, this was always going to be a difficult one. Let's not forget our opponents are the FA Cup holders & still drinking at the fountain of milk & money which is the legacy of their Premiership days. This was always going to be a steep mountain to conquer & for 80+ minutes we were in sight of the summit....
So, as always, onwards & upwards, keep the faith etc etc . You know the drill. Let's fervently hope that our Special One still has the guts & determination to repeat that mantra with us and will lead us to safety against all the odds.
