  • Just as Bradley Pritchard will never be a Championship standard right sided midfielder, so Church will never be a Championship standard striker. Their selections are costing us points we cannot afford to lose. Some will say that the manager has no choice, but what about Michael Smith and Diego Poyet waiting in the wings?

It seems to me that we are now approaching the stage at Charlton where our owner should consider "doing a Sunderland", and replacing Powell with a new manager who can at least provide a short term galvanising jolt to our current squad, particularly if there are no new players arriving in January. Powell's comments in the media in recent weeks are like his brand of football- deeply uninspiring.

Are we going to stay up this season with this same manager and this same group of players. I believe that the answer is 'no', and that it is easier to get rid of the manager than 12-15 players.

Certainly easier to get rid of the manager, but I doubt anyone new coming in will be able to do much different with that team. Jackson, past it. Church, shit. These are just two examples. The only true, consistent quality we have in the team are Solly, Wiggins & Kermorgant. After that Cousins looks promising and Stephens is having a better season (albeit he often goes missing in games). We can't build a winning team on 5 players, particularly as Solly's injury doesn't look too good. After those 5, we struggle. You may say Powell bought the likes of Church and Sordell in, but he's had his hands tied financially since the second half of last season I reckon. His brand of football reflects the poor quality he has at his disposal.

I too have been frustrated with the continued persistence of someone like Pritchard on the wing, relentless faith in Jackson, 1 up front at home games etc. However, I think our problems are because our previous owners couldn't give a shit any more, and now we are starting to see the results of that. Powell has given us 2 great seasons, yet this season even he cannot overcome lack of investment and external things out of his control. I agree the league is tight and a different approach utilising the likes of Smith & Poyet is what people want to see. However, I think if we'd have started players like Smith right from the off we may not even have the points we have now. Powell isn't afraid to blood youngsters (Harriot, Cousins etc), I think he probably doesn't feel they're ready, and based on his performance so far as Charlton manager, I would back him.

As I said before, I think he's a good manager, with the patience to put up with all the shit that has gone on around him. Although RD has only been in charge two weeks, he's the one that must recognise the dire need for players. If not him personally then one of his aides. Sacking Powell now would not save us from relegation. However, backing him with funds (not fringe Liege players) would certainly give us a fighting chance of staying up.
  • No point of players even jumping with keepers anymore is there. Might as well let the keeper catch it & hope he fumbles in into the net.
  • I feel frustrated reading the apparently endless litany of excuses some are willing to make for the limitations of our players and management.

Changing 10-12 players will happen in the summer - and will cost nothing for the departures. The calibre of the replacements and the ability of the management will determine whether where we finish between 6th and 12th.
Right now I believe Chris Powell deserves the chance to turn this around - one striker and a couple of results and the wheels are back on. we have lost 1 in 6 since Solly and Kermorgant came back...keep that going and we climb the table.
Change manager now and risk disaster! Who would take us on and what budget would they want? Probably more than Chris Powell needs?

I am starting to think that we will see a new manager appointed this week. Quite frankly I do not trust CP to get us out of this mess, we need a strong bastard with proven experience, not a lovely guy who appears to be waiting quietly to learn his fate.

I've a feeling Duchatelet will be aware of the fans' strong support for Powell, evinced by the majority of contributions on this site. He may be reluctant to alienate the supporters - on the other hand he didn't shy from unpopular moves at Liege.

  • Has anyone seen enough of smith and poyet to say they should be in the team or just clutching at straws in the hope that anyone would be better?
  • Good post, Cabbles.

Anyone not in the team is better - until they themselves play, then they're crap.

No way Smith is worse than Church - Church would not score goals in League 2 which Smith did.

Sorry, I forgot to put the smiley in my post.

I was only playing on the tendency for some Lifers to big up players not in the team - and then give them dog's abuse when they do play for the 1st team.

    Here's the smiley ;o)

Probably just clutching at straws, but then I have also seen enough of Pritchard, Church, Green, Cook, Sordell, Gower etc to know that all of these Chris Powell signings are NOT good enough, and that we are going down unless we change something and fast.

Right now the Club's survival strategy seems to comprise of "lets pray three teams are worse than us".

  • Solly's knees are shot unfortunately !

I would say purely based on his actions/attitudes at Liege, the fans sentiments and emotions come a long way second to their money when he makes his decision. If he thinks replacing Powell is the difference between us going down, and staying up, Powell will go (rightly or wrongly.) I like many others suspect it will be no later than this approaching weekend that we will discover the fate of Chris Powell, but I certainly wouldn't bet on him staying - though I would like him to.

Sometimes you have to make the best of what is available. Chrissy could only bring in what he could afford.
  • that should have been a goal.

    church is still rubbish though.

    buy someone better.

    that is all
  • i think Saturday was the first defeat we've had when Wood has started and played the full 90 mins
  • I think CP will be here until end of season, especially as he is getting a player in tomorrow that isn't from Liege.

He was unlucky not to score and as I said on the 'players marks' thread was our best defender. Apart from that posting haven't had access to internet and can't be bothered to wade through previous seven pages but suffice to say Boro were not that special and one error by the keeper, who redeemed himself in my eyes with an unconventional block with his feet and two point black saves rushing from his line, cost us a point. Midfield was poor on the day and Yann had little service or support. A spirited final 15 minutes was all we had to show which nearly produced an equaliser, how Church missed at the near post late on I shall never know and what the hell Given was doing outside the six yard box in no mans land to save point blank fron Stephens with the last kick of the game also beggars belief. Same old same old, fresh faces required urgently Rolland please and not cast offs from your other teams if you don't want to see your £20m floating down the Thames. Off to Oxford tomorrow for more punishment COYR

Must be something in it, as I've just seen a tweet from SLP about it.

If he ever reads this site, I think he will draw the conclusion that CPs support is far from being the 100% we have long headlined. I have been surprised at how many posts are accepting it's time for a change and would put the figure at more like 65 or 70 based on these.

Personally, I would like to see what CP can do with better funding and a better pitch. He could become a very good manager but I do agree he has his weaknesses that need to be addressed.

That's because some of the ITV members, have made their monthly concerted effort, to come on here, under their usual or new user names, to continue their "Powell out" campaign.

I don't really understand the logic, other than jealousy, as many have been banned from here.

That may account for some of it CE but there are regular CL posters who have changed their tune on 100% support.
  • just seen the sky highlights .. Thuram should have saved the goal ... however, he looks agile and confident if very unorthodox .. why was our goal disallowed ? .. the ref felt sorry for Given the midget keeper is the only explanation

Apparently it is Richard Cawley on the South London Press who is playing the tease, via twitter this morning. Who could it be? A striker?

  • Just watched the highlights. Nothing wrong with the disallowed goal, it definitely should have stood. Wiggins sending off was a little harsh too IMO, only needed a yellow.

Church really should have connected with that late cross though - was a bad miss again.

It all feels reminiscent of last season to me, we're losing by the old goal and not getting a whole lot of luck along the way. We're far from doomed though, I have faith that if they keep working it'll turn around enough to keep us up. Signing a striker would be useful though, we need this season's Obika to come in and make an impact.

Unorthodox in a keeper spells trouble
  • Looks to me like he misjudged the flight of the goal and the one he saved with his legs, particularly the goal which I think he thought was going wide.

The way these new light balls behave is often discussed and I don't know how much difference it really makes, but he won't have been using the mitre ball in Belgium so maybe that played a part?

Not going to write him off yet, I remember think Deano looked dodgy as when we first got him.
