  • Time a think to consider playing our home games at another location on a temporary basis. WH or CP? Does not seem we can get the pitch back to a playable condition for some weeks.
  • im sorry but what in gods name were the ground staff doing this week under that dome? ud think they just sat under there, had a picnic and crossed their fingers. absolute disgrace and highly embarassing

Barnsley team coach hadn't arrive when the decision was made , which leads me to believe all down to the referee in calling the game off

Statement on the OS: "After the inspection and discussion with both managers, referee Iain Williamson called the game off on safety grounds."

Well unless he travelled down on his own but I saw the team bus turn into Floyd Rd about 20 mins after it was called off

    What should they do?

  • Danny Wilson saying on there website that the game was rightly called off but the club had no information saying there might be a problem with the pitch.Seems like there blaming us
  • It is a bit embarrassing, I don't think I'd complain if we were fined.
  • That is pretty pathetic. Can the FA fine a club for not maintaining the pitch? No criticism of Paddy by the way. Clearly hasn't had the resources.
  • the pitch probably was playable yesterday as it had been covered all week and it was a dry day. it chucked it down in charlton for most of last night so any problem with the drains would probably have left standing water this morning. ground staff might have thought it still playable today. ultimately it is the ref's call

  • When you read that, it looks pretty damning for us. It's our fault, end of.

Does anyone know the official line in a situation like this? Fines? Points deductions? As much as I'd hate to see it I think a default 0-3 loss would be fair today.

    Get real

Well he's right , I think everyone would not be going so mad about it if the club had put the word out that there was a potential for the game to be called off
And then put in place an inspection yesterday or this morning and even if the game was called off like it was at 1.30pm everyone would not feel so bad cos the warning signs were there
And the punters who were ummming and aaaaaaahing whether to go or not could have less complaints about what happened cos they were told it may get called off
And all those who had 1-1.5 hr journeys mAy have held off
It's not rocket science it's common sense
  • What an embarrasing moment for the club this is. Just heard the barnsley chief executive talk. Said there was no way the game could have been on today and could have easily called it off yesterday but charlton refused to get an official out to inspect it .

Someone from the club deserves the sack over this, absolutely pathetic

I actually agree with that. Not acceptable. I imagine the new owners are mightily impressed.

  • Just got home after a 2 hour round trip! It's an embarrassment to the club...

    Posting without reading.

    Typical Charlton disorganisation once again.

    Boxing Day against Southampton anyone?!

It's not rained since last night so, unless some pillock on the ground staff decided it would be a good idea this morning to water the pitch, what "surface water" (source Radio 5 Live) can have appeared since last night or even 9 or 10am this morning?

I daresay the usual apologists will say it's not the fault of the Club it's the ref blah, blah, blah but the Club could have arranged an early inspection to save fans from both clubs the time and expense of a fruitless journey not to mention, in these green conscious times, the unnecessary carbon emissions!

I've got off lightly compared to some yet I've just completed a 70 mile round trip for absolutely nothing. A chap we spoke to in Charlton had driven 80 miles! Who knows how many Barnsley fans have travelled 200 odd miles for absolutely nowt! I said on the way up that it was strange that we hadn't overtaken any Valley Express coaches which we normally do so hopefully they at least got an inside track unlike the rest of us poor mugs stupid enough to follow Charlton!

What a bunch of incompetent pillocks! The sooner "dead wood" like Airman Brown get back on the payroll the better. At least the fans would get some consideration for once.

  • I'm not a scientist but is putting a tent over a soaking pitch the best thing to do? surely the water has to evaporate to somewhere?
  • Danny Wilson said the first he heard about an inspection was at 11:35 this morning yet the twitter announcement was at 12:50. Not very helpful!

but it probably looked ok yesterday so an inspection then would be pointless. it was the rain over night and lack of drains that would have left those puddles. that isn't to say that someone could have communicated a problem this morning. but the talk of doing a pitch inspection yesterday is a bit of a red herring. t
  • Barnsley Supporters Trust giving us grief on twitter lol

    Don't blame them at all.

TBH, I think that's a fair comment from DW.

Very disappointed with both the postponement ( heard at the top of Floyd Rd) and our Club's handling of this.

Earlier in the week, Grounds' staff at SL told me there wouldn't be a problem with this game as the Dome was in place & I believe work /aeration or whatever was being carried out underneath it plus possibly the use of heaters ( please don't quote me on this but this was my perception)

However, someone on here earlier mentioned the water table at The Valley and this may be a nail on the head moment...not that I know ANYTHING about the subject.

Someone who always gets to the ground very early & regularly speaks to staff/players there said he'd seen the pitch and in his words " It looked a mess" . Allegedly, the ref bounce a ball on various areas and the middle was seriously compromised- presume that means there was standing water.

I should like to ask when this standing water was first noticed...and whether a locally based ref shouldn't have been called for a looksee earlier this morning at the very least.

Hate criticising our Club but have to admit this issue was not handled well...unless someone can tell us the whole story of course and show the situation from a different angle.

They predicted rain again last night so why not put the dome back over the pitch...!?
  • If it's true that the dome was sent back on Thursday, then we have wasted any benefit of having it there at all. Penny pinching and false economy at it's worst.

Think I'll leave you all to wallow.

Bored are we Off it - fancy and afternoon of being a Wum ? Give it a rest .
    What you on about?

So the games off. It's disappointing - particularly if you brought your long lens down and you've got nothing to snap - but some of the comments on here are laughable.

If you think that's me being a WUM then you need to get out more. Go to Greenwich, plenty to snap there.
I see you made the effort .
He lives in Eltham so isn't affected in terms of wasting time and money travelling for nothing.
  • Communication problems from Charlton? Well I never.
  • Sweating the asset
  • Why are so many of you blaming the club? THEY CANNOT CALL A GAME OFF!!! IT IS THE REFEREE!!! The ref does not come in hours before the game, he will not come the day before. The club would have loved it if the ref came in yesterday - or to inspect the pitch this morning. It doesn't work like that!! Stop moaning about decision making - they can't call it off until the ref decides whether to play, and he did that at about 1:30pm

    Are you for real ?

  • So Clem or whatever he is called was there, so it as going to be a feature game on the FL show as well....
  • Local weather stations reported 3.5 to 4mm of rain overnight - not huge but still significant for a pitch with no drains.
