We are in a transitional period and shit like this is gonna happen. The pitch needs to be relaid, end of. It isn't going to be done until the summer so were stuck with it. Communication should of been better and I don't know who's responsible for this. Talk of playing at the toolbox, withdrawing from the FA cup and paying barnsley fans travel is ridiculous. NLA hit the nail on the head. When we beat Barnsley in the rearranged fixture when we've had time to strengthen the squad, who will be complaining?
its a tipping point today for me, it highlights that people supporting cafc are always looking to be outraged
, when we go a goal down the normal reaction of a fan is f**k bollox you cnuts, then back to support and thinking come on its only 1 or sometimes 2 we get one back its game on,
on here its a goal down and blam its like its all over now, powells a cnut, clueless this, what does he do, its his fault
people don't even wait till the game is lost before exploding,
today its been shitty for those who travelled for a fair distance and for those I do feel sorry if they have had expense they could ill afford
but for the majority of people going today you've been inconvenienced that's all
the issue with the pitch has been for a few seasons, we aint been able to do anything about it as we were skint, now we aint it will be fixed, we may get fined but so what really
our players are having a winter rest, the mgmt. can focus on strengthening the injured and trying to re enforce and the grounds men get a pitch with no further repairs added to a shit situation
just chill out and enjoy your sunday knowing we didn't lose and bar sheff weds everyone else got a poor result
What a fantastic post. If only the comms team could have come up with a gem like " we're in a transistoonal period and shit like this gonna happen ". That excuses everything then and sod any inconvenience to anyone. " Communication should of ( you mean have ) been better and I don't know who is responsible for this " what a delicious irony ! I fail to see why covering the cost of paying for Barnsley fans travel is ridiculous and no matter what the score when the game is played it won't be forgotten.
Fans were up for shouting for the lads, up for picking up 3 points and up for starting a new era so nothing wrong with being frustrated at the delay... But like you say NLA the lads rest, we chill and new owners can get on with improving the squad. We are not going down and a cup run will be a laugh - seriously looking at Huddersfield away!
phil what do you want them to do now then, how can they make you feel better
SR I don't doubt any of that, I just don't get the outrage , the only winners today were our players, how can that not be a positive thing, glad u agree

How is a fixture snarl up going to help the players?
So the players get a rest but thousands are inconvenienced. How is that good? I feel for the Barnsley fans and our own who have had wasted, costly journeys. I personally found close to two and a half hours on a coach absolutely riveting and the highlight of my week. My time at the weekend is precious and I'd rather not spend it doing a journey with no football at the end.
What would your response be if next week, after a defeat at Boro, CP said it was because we were rusty after not playing for over two weeks? I don't think it puts us at any advantage at all and if any more games are called off, plus maybe a cup run (ha ha), we could find ourselves with a fixture pile up and that will put us, with a small squad, at a considerable disadvantage.
Plus, and admittedly we have no idea, but considerable expense on the pitch, could mean a reduction in CP's playing budget.
Today is a real low point for CAFC. The state of the pitch is one issue but the greater one is the lack of communication, the lack of foresight from Senior Management and then finally the buck passing by that Senior Management when it all went tits up.
NLA, they can make me feel better about my club by doing the decent thing as I suggested. I don't see a transitional period as any kind of excuse. I and many others won't forget today's experience in a hurry no matter what. Today was a great time and opportunity to play the Tykes. There's no guarantee the squad will be stronger when we do play them. In fact we'll probably be weaker but to a large extent that's immaterial.
“Laying an artificial grass surface offers numerous advantages. First of all a FIFA 2STAR approved artificial grass surface has the same technical playing properties as an ideal natural grass pitch”, says STVV chairman Roland Duchâtelet. “You can also play the whole year through on an artificial grass surface. Football days can be organised on artificial grass, with in the afternoons women or young people playing and the first-division team in the evening. That isn't possible on a natural grass pitch: it would just be played to ruin. Finally, an artificial grass pitch can be played on in all weather conditions. There are no water logging problems with artificial grass. The water is drained away perfectly so the pitch can always be played on.” (2011)
is it fuck large a low point , its a game that has been called off ,
are you saying the ground staff are lying that the pitch was in no worse state than when we played brighton and sheff weds
are you saying powell knew nothing of the state of the pitch or didn't go and see it himself prior to today, do you think that he may not have thought, I will check it out and see if I need to make my team aware of anything that may help them and get an advantage over Barnsley
do you think that if he had an opinion that the pitch was worse than the two game I have mentioned that he wouldn't have raised it with the ground staff and then a higher body
do you think he would've not wanted it checked out earlier
yes you have been inconvienced I understand that and your pissed off yep I get it
but its a huge over reaction to say low point
communication was wrong , how as soon as it was known it was off you were told, the ground staff were honest to say what they did ,
if we lose to boro it wont be because we are rusty, it only been two weeks since we played not 2 months
Today has been a naff day for a lot of fans, i feel for people who have shelled out a lot of cash and time travelling to the Valley today.
Stupidly i thought todays game if called off, would have happened yesterday , i wasnt particularly looking forward to going to the game, as i didnt think the match would be much of a spectacle on a quagmire of a surface, I parked up at 2:50 to find the match was called off from a car park attendant in one of the side streets, I know I should have checked Charlton Life, or the club website before I left perhaps, but as I had an estate agent round to talk about selling my gaff I had other things on my plate.
If too much more of this stuff carries on , people will just lose interest, and find other stuff to do with their time.
The club will argue its not their decision but the referees, and they will spin it to say they tried their best to make sure it went ahead im sure, but it makes us look pretty clueless.
Here's hoping there's some good news coming our way this week in terms of player additions, I don't know what can be done about the pitch in the short term, I just hope RD shows clarity of thought, good decision making, and isn't afraid to kick arse when needed.
I hear what people are saying as it gives the players a rest , allows for squad strengthening etc, and it may benefit us in the way the Donny game did, but the authorities are not going to be so tolerant with us for much longer.
You could say we are reaping what we've sown , but to say there is a heck of a lot of sorting out to do at our club is a huge understatement at the moment, I need to be filled with confidence.
NLA, all those points you make are valid and I hope will all be addressed in some sort of internal investigation. If CP did raise pitch concern with the ground staff did they in turn raise it with Senior Managemnt. Did CP raise it with Senior Management. He agreed with the game being called off so I can only assume that he had seen the pitch beforehand and expected this decision all along.
The low point is not the game being off ( although that is now two games called off, one on but only after a late, late pitch inspection and one game abandoned) but the communication and total disregard for the Clubs customers, us.
he didn't see the pitch as any more of a problem than the sheff and brighton games large, he agreed with it being called off as he would've those two games, however 2 different refs said the same or comparable pitches for those two games were playable, he wanted to play the players wanted to play but the ref called it off
I paid £400 plus for a season ticket for this season, the fact the club can't produce a decent playing surface to play football on is shambolic. Luckily for me travel to the ground is a 30 minute drive but feel for all those who spend a lot of time and money getting to the ground
I bet the club lost more on food given to corperate and hospitality packages, plus wages for catering and stewarding staff, plus food in the concourse plus printing of programmes
why wouldn't they want to call it off earlier had they thought it was in doubt
ok so the club cover the costs for the away fans nice gesture but changes what about today, nothing nada not a thing
the ref called it off, the last 2 refs said the same pitch was playable, how is this the clubs fault
its not just about players getting a rest though is it? New owners and chances to climb away from bottom three and say this is the start of the next leg of the journey of this club - the Baton handed over.
And yes it is about the comms and the tiny amounts quoted by Henry Irving that might have fixed the issue months ago. Most fans don't have the time nor interest to look at details but the club needs to get the basics right. Improving football and improving ticket sales is the way forward and fans were up for it today.
Agreed no point going into detail - dirty laundry for new owners to wash in private. Points made earlier in the thread related to spin.
Bottom line is we are on the up big time - let's enjoy! Judging by this thread and the number of views there is a lot of energy and perhaps they wamt the club to get the basics right?
Don't have time to read the 200+ posts that have appeared on this thread since I last checked in so apologies if this has already been said 100 times but the official statement is horribly worded. It's either been poorly worded by someone in the comms team and issued without senior review or deliberately worded in a way that deflects blame from senior management towards frontline staff.
If it's the former it's possibly an indication of the inadequate management of the club right now, if it's the latter it's a down right shitty way to treat staff and if it's symptomatic I'm not surprised so many people have left the club.
Another question I have, if Barnsley knew the game might be called off at 11 ish, why didn't they take it upon themselves to let their fans know?
There isn't one chance in a hundred that statement wasn't vetted by someone from the "leadership team" IMO - if not written with them in attendance - although possibly we'll get a follow-up expressing disappointment with the comms department to cover their backs.
I still reckon the dome *was* taken off Friday afternoon/evening as was stated several times, and people coming on this thread specifically to deny this are lying!
Amidst all the comments about this being a farce and this being a joke etc etc I'm going to give you all a quick Geography lesson, minus the colouring in.
Precipitation runs into the ground filling the gaps between rocks and soil until it finally reaches a point where the soil is completely saturated. It is this point where the soil is completely saturated that we call the water table. The water table fluctuates dramatically dependent on your location. Usually it is several metres below the surface however in areas that experience high levels or precipitation, or happen to be close to rivers or the sea it can be somewhat higher. Often if areas experience freak amounts of rainfall the water table will rise to the surface causing the top layer of soil to become boggy and saturated, and in extreme cases even flood.
I hate to be patronising, and it's been mentioned before but we play football in a Valley, next to one of the largest rivers in the country. Whatever facilities that had been dug under the pitch to "help" drain any water away (and I say help because no drainage system is guaranteed to ensure you remove all excess water from an area, or somehow magically change the water table) are either overawed by the recent rainfall or have been failed to be maintained to a high enough standard in the past. There are a lot of things you can beat in life but as we see all so often nature isn't one of them, and on that basis it really isn't worth getting angry about it.
I thought the pitch was better for the Brighton game than the Wednesday home match and that the conditions were dodgy and our players were unsure of their footing against Wednesday Who's to say Barnsley won't have a stronger team for the rearranged game , who's to say they'll still be in such a shit run and we'll be on such a good run and in a prime spot to beat them as we were today
The fact that there was potential for the game to have been in doubt and that wasn't relayed to fans ( due to the wrong call being made by someone saying it's ok) is the problem but as I said before they can play it safe from now on by saying it may be called off for every game cos we actually aren't sure
I noticed Blackpools pitch looked in reasonable nick from the small clip from boro's goals against them , was it last season or/ and this season we were trying to justify our wanky joke pitch by saying it wasn't as bad as theirs .....whatever they looked like they sorted theirs rather than hoping it would be ok
If we can get the home game against Oxford on, and it's a big if, it might mean we play a strong side! As for the pitch - from what the ref said it sounds like there is too much water in the pitch that can't get out - We need to work out a way of getting water out of a saturated pitch as this isn't going to evaporate in the middle of winter. Mind you - if the problem is caused by the high water table and the water having nowhere to drain off, you remove the water and more returns whether it is raining or not.
