I was at the game, but a mate says we had 71% possession according to BBC stats in the first half which feels right from what I saw. We really were good. Palace supporting colleague said today that we were the best away side he has seen all season in the first half - couldn't believe our second half performance.
That may be why those were not at the game are just brushing it off- they think - oh well - we were beaten by a better side, 2-1 not so bad, but those who were there will know we absolutely murdered them in the first half and if we had shown the same ambition in the second, and responded in a minor way to the desperate tactical change by Holloway, we would have won that game.
I have just seen the following on the Nigels forum:
Goal Machine Wherever I like Yesterday 8.24am Thought the flair was pretty good! You wouldn't have known the Charlton fans were there apart from the 30 or so at the back. Couldn't hear them from the Holmesdale. Funny old bunch, always particularly quiet
It's a shame that our coaching team including the Manager seem unable to trust an attacking line up, even at home or against apparently weaker opposition. Can anyone remember us putting out a team set up to attack, I can't. Makes for a lack of excitement, I think our support has been stupified by this and is starting to accept that we will spend the last minutes of every game in our own half. We need an injection of positivity from somewhere. Even against Gillingham and Welling we seemed to be unable to impose ourselves. We can't have Scott Parker back, but his Brother in law Harry Arter looked the best player on the pitch when he came back. What a pity we let him go.
This sums up this season for me. Too many times have I got to my seat to hear the team being read out and thinking where are the goals going to come from and ending up biting my nails during the last 10 mins as we dfend deeper & deeper. The stats bear this out - we have scored just 3 goals from the 75th min onwards, showing that we hardly get out of our area to cause damage to the opposition.
Good points; wiggins looked great/wagstaff looked great/ hamer was exceptional / bad points we ran out of steam/ we have no plan for the final 30 minutes when stephens should have come on to bolster a tired midfield. Other points; they looked very good in attack in the second half and we didn't. Overall lots to build on and don't give the team and powell a hard time. Remember this season is a big learning curve where transfers haven't worked out both last summer and this January and we will do well to finish mid-table but Powell has to think now about summer signingsif we are to move forward.

The positive in this is that it usually means we have something to defend going into the final third of matches. But, the statistics may be showing that our approach in this part of the game is the wrong one. The next question is whether it is tactical or pshycological. I suspect a mixture of the two - sometimes a positive sub needs to made- even if you are winning, to ensure the message gets to the team not to sit too deeply.
It will be interesting to me when we get to 50 points, which I know we will. Maybe this will be the time when we try a different approach. I think the 4-5-1 is the way to go away - as long as the team is carrying a threat and not defending too deeply. When that haoppens a change needs to be made straight away.
I think you miss the point - I have absolutely no doubt we'll stay up, but when we have accumulated a figure that suggest we are safe - maybe Powell will try some alternative tactical options.
