We're an average middle of the road side sitting in mid table. Given the 5/6 years I'd take that. Finances to strengthen just aren't there. Until we get a decent cash injection were not going to be able to progress... a few players are mid table championship players at best......The fact that we've lost to those clowns makes it all seem worse than it is.

more convinced than ever that we are only a few players short of a play-off squad and that the owners, having covered £7M losses last season and perhaps the same this time (?), will be pushing for top six finish next time... you don't go this far and then just leave things ticking over do you?
We were so much better than them in the firat half so someone in the management team needs to work out how to convert that... or...?

  • Just noticed! The Stig cartoon looks like Dowie! Did you mean that!

Mean it? I didn't even draw it!
Who did? Jordan, Reid, Pardue, Parkinson?

  • Just seen goals nobody near Murray for either.
  • So Pissed off right now!!!! I'll post pictures and my review/player marks when I have regained the ability to not use a swear word in every sentence. Thank you fro your patience.
  • Can't comment on game. Spent the day at kings college hospital visiting a relative. That gives perspective. However it seems to me we are a mid table team in a very tight league. Make it to the summer and see what powell can do to improve the squad.
  • Last week very critical of CP this week I feel we got tactics right and conceded the 1st against the run of play which gave them a boost.. Needed to have taken our chances but proud of all our players today especially fuller and hamer
  • Shit half time team talk . Heads down when it was 2 1 no character

Do you think the tactics were right in the second half?
  • Turning point was the Speroni save from Fuller I felt

  • SCP will be a top class manager, just needs to learn how to work substitutes to our advantage and be able to out manouver the other manager.
  • Solly won't be about in the summer the way he had Zaha in his back pocket first half. Absolute quality. That's where holloway again showed his experience by simply swapping him and Bolasie. Zaha shone after that

Experience or just used the options available to him? Same with changing to 4-4-2 and bringing Phillips on - we don't have players of that quality to bring on and switching to 4-4-2 ourselves is a risk considering how it could weaken our midfield.
  • Bossed the second half but bottled most the second. We looked brilliant for periods of the first but was a different team by the end.

  • I was at the game and struggle to accept some of the comments made. Dervitte is poor and shouldn't have been playing. Alright he wins headers but can't pass wind. Stephens was missed why wasn't he playing??? Waggy should not have been taken off. Also the comment that Palace were far better than us is bullshit. We should have put it to bed by half time. Also finally I would have stuck on BWP instead of kerm.

Two issues second half. Did nothing to counter the Palace formation change and ran out of steam on 70mins.
  • For a change

Should have been 2 or 3 up at HT. Jackson missed the best chance with that header from about 6 yards.
Dervite & Fuller could also have scored in the 2nd half.
I thought we controlled the game for the 1st 70 mins, bar a few mins in both halves.
    It looked too comfortable.
Then they get 2 goals out of the blue & we lose.
    Unbelieveable Jeff.

I would rather have seen a switch to 4-4-2 to provide more or an outlet that wait until we had to chase the game and lump 2 more strikers on.

Just got back - defended Powell last week but he lost us the points today I'm afraid. Firstly, the good points - Palace were missing a few midfielders and we got the tactics spot on - bossed the midfield and had Fuller there to make a nuisance of himself, which I felt he did brilliantly. I can't remember us being so dominant in a half and 3-0 wouldn't have flattered us - yes a negative was we missed chances we shouldn't.

At half time I was worried, because I know us. As the game went on I knew we would sit back further. The fact we were killing them would have less effect when they sussed that we had lost interest in a second and wanted a 1-0. I was worried that Holloway would make a final throw of the dice and go 5 up front. I was worried because I knew that a) we wouldn't counter it and b) we'd have less and less ambition and keep what we had, which is generally the only way 5 up front works for more than 20 minutes!

What said it all to me was just before the Palace goal, we were farting about in the Palace corner flag area without any drive to test them, our motivation was to run the clock down. That echoed the message that they could take risks because we were holding what we had. When Holloway got desperate, I should have been happy - reading the game - it was actually asking for BWP at that point - industrious, nice touch - would have really stretched them. and cause a fragile defence problems.

Anyway, Palace got a goal and then got another- Hamer to blame for the second - He needs to know when to come out and when to stay on his line - coaches -please go through the videos of the last two games and work it through with him, because that is his weakness and what is stopping being a top top keeper.

When we made our first sub it was at 1-0 Wiggins for Waggy - which was a bit pointless as Waggy was playing well with Evina - not saying it had a negative effect but it certainly didn't change anything, which is the point of a sub isn't it.

I love Powell to death and when you look at the quality of player we have in the side, he has done a great job, but why oh why is he so cautious, why?

  • after reading all the views on here i get the impression that if Hamer was Englands No1 Southend would still not rate him
  • If it hadnt been for what happened at home against Wednesday last week people wouldn't be saying "Powell lost us the points"

I think some people on here need to wait till the day after a game before they start posting when they've had a bit of time to calm down.
  • Good post Mutters.

On your last point probably because he was a defender.
  • Just back from that sh*thole of a ground, very disappointed...

You'd have though we'd played in mid-week not them, from the 70th minute we had too many players flagging.

We have to take out chances, but if I'm honest the players aren't good enough, they work hard (Pritchard, Wilson, Dervitte) but their not match winners.

Disappointed not to see Stephens start, he can be a match winner - Blackburn away...

SCP - it's easy for us to say make a sub and when you're 1 up I can understand why you wouldn't change things, but anyone can see when a player is knackered or when the opposition is on top, change things, make the opposition think about things...!

We need to turn our home form around to ensure we don't get dragged into a relegation battle and we have to now win on the 16th March got to have one derby win where we can gloat!!
  • Please Powell, don't play Pritchard for a few games and lets see if we're a worse team.
Other than running around chasing the ball all game, i don't see what he actually does.

Dervite looked good day as a defensive cm.

I don't think it was tiredness it was approach. As we get nearer the line we go more into a defensive shell. If Palace hadn't changed things, we probably would have got a draw at worst, but they did and that attitude, coupled with not adjusting your tactics gives them a chance.

Those saying we are not good enough couldn't have been at the game. it was lost on tactics, we were the better side until we decided to just defend the lead rather than look for a second. I don't mean go all out for it, but I mean look for it. We stopped looking for it and it allowed Palace to take risks, because our threat, which was there throughout the first half, had gone.

I though Pritchard did well - you have to see what he does off the ball as well as on it. JJ was the sub for BWP- when Holloway made his subs. Wouldn't have made the sub in most games but by that stage you get a feel and it felt like his sort of game to me. Did anybody else think that - I felt it was blindingly obvious?
  • Listened in on the radio so can't add much. but a second goal would have done it for us. We totally lack goal scoring ability from midfield with only Jackson likely to net more than once in a blue moon.
  • Right then. Listen up. I've got to get this off my chest.

I have supported Charlton since 1957.
I will continue, as I have done in whatever division they are in.
I have been through Charlton's ups and downs.
I support the banner at the top of the home page - I think it refers to the club.

I will now cut to the chase:
That's now the second game we have lost after taking the lead.
I think now Paul Hart should become what he was perhaps brought in to do if things didn't work out - be manager.
SCP can if he wants, become his No. 2. (Almost everyone has said he is still learning - we may be running out of time).
If something is not at the end of the season I think "The Red, Red, Robin" can be scrapped and we will run out to "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life".

Thanks for listening - cue abuse!

Hart gets teams to play lovely football (see Forest 12 years ago). He is perfect for developing young players who play matches where the results are a lot more meaningless.

Powell has arguably already proved himself more as a manager than Hart.
  • Weather cp left the subs to late or not, weather we are in form or not, even if we were battling relegation, I don't give a toss, we lost to Palace, to me that's a massive blow, getting laughed at by them strippy Croydon cunts.

We are not running out of time- we will stay up comfortably. What we need to do is get to 50 points a.s.a.p. and Powell needs to then experiment in the way he approaches games - or maybe more accurately how he responds to opponents tactical changes - somebody - like Hart maybe has to tell him that he is too cautious - but he shouldn't be sacked, and we shouldn't be talking in those terms. I think he will be a great manager and their have been signs of it this season, but also his inexperience has shown in some games!
