Time for some more serious moderation I reckon ... People used to be to embarrassed to have these petty tit for tat battles ... Now it's starting to become more and more common ...
I don't see these chants as homophobic, in no way do they belittle gays. What they infer is that the Brighton fans, mostly red blooded macho males, are an effeminate bunch who bat for the other side. The dilemna is whether we can come up with new and witty (like a Kyle version) or merely trot out rival side's tired chants.
Let's keep all this in perspective. Apart from songs which get taken up by thousands of people (e.g CP's Red Army etc) the Jimmy Seed can't hear the Covered End anyway, so no-one's going to be offended.
What a shame, like Lancashireaddick and others, I opened this thread in anticipation of what the title says! What a pity it degenerates into this kind of thing. As a woman, I find it offensive and quite honestly, pathetic.

Ok the best support for OUR team is not by singing about the opposition fans. Every time we have played Brighton recently it has been an excellent atmosphere not because of berating their fans but because both sets of fans got behind their teams (actually they outsung us by some margin). What impressed me about Brighton was the fact they didn't indulge in insulting us (there was no time for that); they were too busy supporting their team and that is what we should be doing with our team. I like the new songs for team members (jj, solly, hamer,) and there should be more. What more could each player want, what more could the team want . So focus upon the game , make as much noise as last week (and yes it did sound intimidating last week) and be positive. Leave the insults out and give due respect as remember Brighton are a good crowd and lets have a good day out.
I honestly think some people are to easily offended for everyone else on this site, I don't think Brighton fans really give a sh@t what is sung and also doubt gay rights people take to much notice either. I could understand if it was songs like "we hate you because you are queer" I am sure the same people getting upset about this Brighton gay episode would join in with a "feed the scousers let them know its Christmas time" if we played Liverpool.
Lets just get over it and enjoy the game instead of worrying what everyone else is doing.

some Brighton fans think it is OK and others don't think it is OK
But please don't trott out the sad line about people being offended for others. You don't know if any of the people who've posted on here are gay and you don't know if any of the fans sitting around you at the the Valley are gay.
And even if you are not black, gay, Jewish does that mean you have not right to say anything?
Oh yeah its the old lose-lose situation. If you're not part of the persecuted group you're being offended for others but if you are part of the group then you have a chip on your shoulder/no sense of humour/playing the race card.
Either way you are allowed to spout vile abuse and pretend it's "banter".

Well said. Why do some people always feel the need to insult others? Singing songs of support for our own team is far more productive.
Does "we can see you holding hands" really constitute homophobic abuse? I can vaguely see the pov that it is implying they're all gay and that's bad, but also can't help but feel that's not how it's intended by anyone. In my eyes it comes across more as a joke about the stereotype of Brighton and not so much abuse aimed at gay people
But whatever, I can't say I would ever be offended by any song aimed at my race/sexuality/hair etc as I see pretty much every song as a joke so maybe I'm not the best person to comment on this type of thing
Not bothered reading all the 'stuff' above...got bored after a the first load of comments, however I've got a ticket for Saturday's game....I'm looking forward to a great atmosphere, everyone urging the team on and a 'rocking' in the covered end......COYR's (sorry if I've spoilt the arguments)
Well, I've just read through this thread and it is pretty unbelievable - Henry, what has rattled your cage to get so upset with numerous posters on here, each of them expressing their viewpoint which appears to be contrary to yours. It happened time and again. Now, what has been happening in your personal life lately? :-)
Jeremy Kyle was sung to Peterborough, so yeah horse has already bolted on that one sorry.
And friend or defoe, lets dispense with the homophobia, it's as bad as racism.
but targeting someone for their race is clear racism, singing homophobic songs at Brighton is different. It's just a bit of fun.
I am all for banter & giving the away fans a bit of stick. But you cannot condone homophohia. We don't want/need that shit being sung on saturday. It is embarrassing.
I wasnt condoning, but IMO, singing homophobic songs at Brighton is just giving them a bit of banter/stick. Chances are, 99% of them tomorrow won't be gay
So singing Jew songs at Tottenham Isn't as bad as people made out because most of their fans are not actually Jewish??? Your logic is at best questionable. If you were gay or a Brighton supporter I wonder if your views would change. My guess is homophobic comments are just as offensive to gay people as racist comments are to black people.

move on...
Why he is right
i would much rather the atmosphere be like last saturday where we were loud we were very witty in some of the creative songs such as Jeremy Kyle
i have mentioned it twice on here already the ban the fine and the prosecution for singing anything homophobic is the same as anything racist
and should be treated as such cant we just do the smoke bombs the flares and be loud and disrupt Brightons game plan

I take it you sit in the Jimmy Seed stand?

(and people are worried about millwall coming to the valley)

A new team is formed, let's call them London Nigeria. They are a mostly black team and have a largely black following.
As time goes on they sing songs referring to their skin colour and are often heard rolling out all the usual stereotypes about themselves.
Would it now be acceptable for opposing fans to sing:
You're black, and you know you are...
We can see your cock from here...
etc
OK - it's not the best analogy, but the best I have right now. Brighton largely don't give a poo about the usual songs that come their way.
Tottenham could be banned from calling themselves Yids, let alone anyone else using the term.
It's madness; this is a game that has massive tribal instinct and that's why your thermos flask and mittens are Red.
Some realism is required here - nobody is planning to violently protest against a gay pride march.
Over.
I would say it's time to chill out.
