@Maybe_baby - yes mate I would like to concur with your original point. I would like to think that Saturday's events have rejuvenated the faithful and ignited a fire in the bellies, helping to create a rambunctious atmosphere at the Valley for the visit of the Seagulls. Hope some of ours don't start giving it Billy Ten Spuds just because we admirably took the piss in you-know-whos backyard. Let's keep it classy.
Hull fans were abusing them last year singing that they're so far south they may as well be French. Other northern clubs have probably done the same, but not bad.
Having a quick look on of their sites, this has made me smile:
"Groupon , Groupon , Buy one , get one free And you'll never fill Selhurst You'll never fill Selhurst Groupon , Groupon"
Jeremy Kyle was sung to Peterborough, so yeah horse has already bolted on that one sorry.
And friend or defoe, lets dispense with the homophobia, it's as bad as racism.
but targeting someone for their race is clear racism, singing homophobic songs at Brighton is different. It's just a bit of fun.
I am all for banter & giving the away fans a bit of stick. But you cannot condone homophohia. We don't want/need that shit being sung on saturday. It is embarrassing.
Well we sing about incest so lets add some homophobia to it too, after all its all in the best possible taste!!!!! Oh and its only banter.
Let's just sing up for the Charlton team, eh? That some songs are done week in, week out, year after year to certain opposition is really boring. Why do people feel such things are in any way worth repeating? 'Valley, Floyd Road' is much more positive than taunting other footie fans.
There's some chants which Palace sing about HIV and other stuff which is sick and wrong and shouldn't be sung about which is homophobic and needs to be stop.
Living down that part of the world, Brighton fans I know don't care about those chants because just another stereotype like scouses stealing and northers beating wifes. However I never asked a gay Brighton fan before what they think about those chants because I don't know any of them so my opinion might be blinked from that sense.
I personally feel singing about holding hands is not overly offensive but it's been sung for so long which they have properly heard at every game. Plus the do you take it from behind chant as well
They used to sing I was told "Always come, always come, always come from behind" when they were losing and started to win.
To stop all the arguements I think we should have a code of conduct all fans sign up to.
These should include;
NO shouting, singing or general rowdiness. If we score a ripple of light applause is acceptable and you may say "well played Charlton" If the opponents score a ripple of light applause is acceptable and you may say "well played (insert team name)" You may only get out of your designated seat when visiting the lavatory or when you leave.

This is a false argument, albeit done here with a smile, that gets trotted out all the time. (See the flare thread for other examples)
It suggests that the only two positions are being totally passive and polite at football OR anything should be allowed regardless because its football.
What this false rgument misses out is the huge middle ground where you can be witty, a bit risque, take the piss and laugh at other fans, and yourselves, without crossing the line into hate, vile abuse, racism or homophobia.
I thought the Jeremy kyle song was brilliant not only because it wound up the spanners but it was a clever twist on the sick Adolph Hitler song used by West Ham. Same tune, totally different intent.
I remember Matt Lucas being interviewed for that documentary about how there are no opnely gay footballers, and saying that he thought the 'we can see you holding hands' chant was quite witty and inoffensive. I think there's a line between the overtly offensive and a joke, but unfortunately that line differs from person to person. You're inevitably going to offend someone. I think if I were a Brighton fan I'd be bored to tears by the same chants over and over though. Instead of spending all the run up to the match defending chants they're going to sing anyway those people should put their time and effort into coming up with some funny ones
I'm sure there was a thing on Sky Sports news about away fans at Brighton getting kicked out (I think some got nicked) for using homophobic abuse in their chants.
"Does your boyfriend know you're here" "We can see you holding hands" "Sing when you're rimming" "We forgot that you were queer" "You take it up the aaaaaaarse, you take it up the arse" "We know why you're standing up"
All have to be sung. They're to a club renound for being in the gay capital and are not in any way malicious. I don't know one gay person who would be offended by us singing these; man up and stop being so precious and PC.
I know plenty of gay people, and I can tell you each & every one of them would be offended.
I bet u do
I agree has to be sung, its just banter! in no way is it near singing a racist song...

Maybe I'm getting old but I just don't find the "We can see you holding hands" etc, very funny.
Bloody phone is gonna get me in trouble one day.

Just as our black and asian fans don't find racist singing funny.

Edit - looks like it happens fairly frequently
