Just what I thought watching it.

  • Blimey, that's a turn up for the book - were you lost?

Yup!! Pardew put the idea in my head then couldn't go. Me and Freddy went. His first away and he loved it!

Their fans reminded me a bit about what we can be like sometimes when we are on form. The ref made a good call but they went overboard trying to make him doubt himself, moaning and groaning about every subsequent decision. Credit to them. I think it backfired on them because the ref saw the handball clearly and knew he had made the right call according to the rules and then was determined to be strong. So rather than even things up - which is what they were trying to achieve, he gave us the benefit on one or two.

Stephens has been outstanding last two games and when I saw he wasn't playing, I was worried. At the moment, he would be the first/or second name Sir Chris puts down on his teamsheet. Very happy we got a win in a tough place - a very tough place without him.

I love JJ but have never been a fan of his penalties. He had a great record before he has started to miss them lately but I have always likened his style to Frank Lampard ( who to be fair has a better record than what I think he should have). By that I mean, they are penalty takers who give the keeper a chance. Unlike say a taker like SuperClive or Darren Bent who gave the keeper no chance. They could still miss the odd one but their style was more secure. JJ is a strong character so won't hide from the responsibilty, but it might be time for Sir Chris to do a stock take and see what the relative penalty taking skills are elsewhere in the team.

Solly is total class - I'm sure we will have to ready ourselves for a few bids in the next window.
  • Not much more to add really but brief sound bites:

    - Let's be clear Burnley are a good side and under Dyche will get better. They are defensively very sound and at home very tough to break down.
    - Performance was not good enough, but a massive 3 points.
    - Loved the Llera chant and so pleased to find out he had OG'd!
    - Burnley really is the place that time forgot
    - Defence excellent as was Hulse. Looking forward to getting Wilson back for his energy and good play. Matches in this division are won by strong engine rooms. Would like to see a Wilson, Pritch and Stephens central midfield trio and go 433
    - Jonsson absolute garbage but Seabourne very solid, but does not get forward so we are a bit lop sided when attacking. Hurry back Rhoys

    However, onwards and upwards. COYR

ahhh fanny, fancy missing the goal reaching for the lucky humbugs out your bag, glad you did though as it clearly worked!

you should get yourself a bum-bag to keep your treats in, or as the americans call them 'fanny-packs' that way you wont have to go looking for ya bag and miss the goals ;~)

I'm happy to make any sacrifice as long as we win , bloodnut .

Hmm. Fanny-pack ....Might have to add one of those to my tartan blanket on my letter to Santa.

    Plus a kilo of humbugs.

TOTALLY AGREE with Bolloxbolder !!!!! With Haynes, Hulse AND Fuller we'll have everything ! Pace, strenght, aerial presence, quality and great work-rate !

  • Just arrived back in S. Manchester. The game reminded me of several results from last year, where we went 1-0 up and then shut up shop, thinking our defence would cope with anything Burnley could offer. However, in this league I'm not sure this is good enough. The ball retention after the goal was very poor, with team mates running away from the player on the ball, resulting in the only option of punting it upfield. Very pleased with the result and another 3 points. The defence played very well, with Hamer having little to do in the second half. He did make one outstanding save in the first half, flying across the goal and flicking the ball over the bar from a fiercely struck 25yd shot. His catching and fielding crosses was exemplary. We did miss Stephens, he has come on in the last few games and I'm sure his calming influence was missed today.

Jacko's pen was weak, although well directed, but a regulation save from their keeper. Haynes goal was very well taken as I thought that Hulse's header had too much on it, but he leaped well to place the ball back across the goal.

I don't like criticising debutants, I think it can take 5-10 games to see someones full potential, but Johnsson's debut was crap. It reminded me very much of Alonso against Brentford. Most of his passes were ill directed, he kept on giving away free kicks in dangerous positions, and the last straw was when he fell over on the ball to present Austin with a run on goal. CP had had enough at this point, and immediately subbed him with Fuller. Further work on the training ground required!

This reads as a fairly critical review, but hey! we won. Onwards and upwards.

    Fair summary, altrinchamaddick.

Can't really comment on the pen as it was down the far end and lots of bodies flying around in front of goal. Didn't know their man had been sent off until he'd eventually trudged the length of the pitch and reached our penalty spot in front of us. Loads of time taken with this, protests etc which probably shouldn't have put off JJ but probably did !

Felt that Eggy should have been replaced with Devite and not a 3rd striker but, hey what do I know ? Unfortunately, the substitution left our midfield a bit lightweight and as others have stated, the ball was pumped over their heads more often than not which was such a pity and did us few favours.

However, the turning point of the game was yet to come....

Having passed around the Cadbury's choc fingers followed by the humbugs at the break, I was beginning to think we might not break the deadlock and stated that further tooth destroying bullets were required. And whilst reaching into my bag, we scored !!!!!! And I missed the goal ( now awaiting my first viewing via The FL Show)

And the rest is history. MOM for me was Cort who won everything in the air , followed closely by Solly who tidied up several crucial bits of untidiness at the back, bless him. As for Danny Haynes - what a difference he's made ! long may it last.

Someone else posted about SCP's " body language" as he exited the pitch in front of the away end. Saw him kick the advertising board & although he clapped us etc , seemed rather unhappy about something....Could be the behaviour of the Burnley "lovelies" I've since read about or that he was frustrated with the way we played in the 2nd half. But when did we last play well against 10 men ? Will have to ask him on Thursday evening.

    Onwards & upwards !!!!!

so the lady who passed round the choc fingers and kept shouting "keep the ball on the ground" is you.
Me? - I was the bloke in the row in front of you with the camera, and no I forgot to snap our goal.
I nearly did ask you if you were Fanny but was too shy!
  • Had a really great day out. As I mentioned on the other Burnley thread, Swerve Jnr was the away mascot for the day. This had been arranged through Young Addicks so a big thanks to Wendy for arranging this with the opposition clubs.

He was treated superbly by Burnley, and given the same experience as the home mascot. Once we were introduced they were taken to the dressing rooms where he met Chrissy and all the squad, the young lady looking after them said our lads were excellent with him, taking time to chat and sign whereas some of the other away teams haven't been quite so receptive.

I was left to have a nice couple of pints in one of the lounges with the home mascot's family. We were then all taken to the indoor training pitch at the ground where they joined in coaching and a short match with some local clubs who were part of their community work. We were then taken pitchside where they prepared for the big moment. The local clubs did a guard of honour whilst the boys lead the teams out, I thought my heart was going to burst when I watched him walk out hand in hand with Jacko!

As for the game, just watched FLS, probably handball but wouldn't have been surprised if he had waved play-on. Penalty should have been a retake though, linos need to cut down on the encroachment by keepers. I thought we were comfortable overall, as you would expect with the extra man I suppose. A little mention for Pritch, who I've worried was out of his depth a couple of times this season but continues to come back with good performances like that. Absolute model professional.

I'm sure something must have been said from the home stand on the final whistle as most of our bench turned sharply to look and it caused some reaction from Powell (controlled) and Haynes (less so!).

Swerve Jnr had a great time, Burnley are sending us official photos and the signed programme with his photo in it will be a great memento of the day. I think these mascot days had been arranged until Christmas so if they are offered through Young Addicks again, its a great opportunity if you have kids of the right age.

Sounds like you both had a great day Swerve. Good on Burnley for treating you so well.
  • here's the penalty if it uploads as I've never tried this before and not sure what size to upload so selected the smallest:

  • Cheers LL that's a cracking photo. Have to wait until tonight when I can check TFLS, but the placement looks excellent. Even if it was placed rather than hit, the keeper's done well. Don't know why when they practice, good pen takers like JJ don't try to hit it ( foot plus in the air in the side part of the netting. A keeper can't dive to one side at his extreme reach and not have a descending arc. Hit it higher in the position above and it's a goal every time.
  • Great result again, there not to happy on their website, not very complimentary to us, and wishing ill on Hulse and Fuller. Lets hope we can take this form into our next 2 home matches.
  • This was posted on their forum on the 14th, love the comment about the potential pen and sending off! Quality shoot yourself in the foot post!

re: Leon Cort doing well at Charlton
Leon Cort is a good defender when facing away from his goal against a static target man like Iwelumo, put him up against a quick mobile forward like Pato who will constantly be on the move and turn him towards goal he struggles to cope, his worst game for us was against Reading and in particular Long who he just couldn't handle, If Cort plays and we start with Pato and Austin he will be in for a torrid afternoon, we may even see a penalty and a sending off
  • Hahaha!!!
  • Great stuff swerve sounds like the lad had a day he won't forget

  • unbelievable result, well pleased even if the performance was a bit turgid by the sound of things and the decisions went our way , i thought that wasn't allowed
could not in a million years see the 9 points that have arrived since the m'boro mauling but we have a class act as manager and in SCP(we're not worthy) we trust
well deserved result for the handfull that made the journey up there
as someone above said 6 away games undefeated peeerleeeeeeeeease make it 7
i'm so confident (sort of) we'll stay up that i laid some goon 8 to 1 on us getting relegated this season on betfair, what a difference 3 wins make !

    top 2 finish 0.25% ;-)....... 3rd-6th 7.75% ..... 7th-12th 22% ....13th-21st 60%.... the dreaded R 10%

    Great photo, Lancs.

There's a Burnley player that I would estimate is 2 strides into the box, in front of and almost concealed by their number 6.

Judging by the position of the ball, he surely encroached into the box before Jackson struck the penalty kick?
  • Went yesterday, my first away of the season and a new ground. Couldn't see what happened with the penalty incident and didn't even realise he'd been sent off until I saw him running towards us (the tunnel is at the away end). Burnley fans on the train and platform were convinced there was no handball but having just seen the replay I can't see the ref had any choice. The shot is going in and he stops it with his upper arm, even Dyche said he thought it was 'ball to hand', so he admits it struck his arm and not his chest. It wasn't a thunderbolt and he was 8 yards from Solly so he could have got his arm out of the way. Clear penalty and he has to be sent off.
  • Quality away day, worth the hangover. Really, really good defensive performance whilst Haynes always looked dangerous. Unlike Austin, who we kept very quiet.

Atmosphere was okay, constant singing but not a great number.
  • One thing I'd just like to say having seen the highlights - Pritchard's ball through to Solly for the penalty incident was a gem.

He seems to be growing in stature and confidence in this league - well done Bradley!
  • Not much to say really it was a good solid away win we dug in deep and defended well as a unit great result.
  • Unfortunately, the incident was miles away from the Charlton fans in a crowded penalty area.Looking at the BBC video, you can see Trippier dip his shoulder and arm to the ball so there was a clear intent to stop it,even if it was an automatic reaction.Watch his body language afterwards--have I got away with it,I'll look bemused! The main problem was that not one of our players appealed and so their fans felt the referee had imagined it.
It felt really good to come away from the ground knowing we had beaten them. Not a pleasant bunch,in fact about as pleasant as that awful kit they wore.Northern clubs have the worst kit designs, fact.(Sorry,I forgot the Nigels).
Really well done SCP and all involved,a resolute display and it shows that we are mentally tough and prepared to dig-in.All the traits from last year are there and if the players do as they are coached now on in,SCP will get us very near this season.
Just one niggle, please stop giving the ball back to the opposition so cheaply.Pass the ball out to a Charlton shirt and not where one is imagined to be.
    Thank you.

Yeah, saw the sholder dip, you have this spot on.

I think you're right Oggy, I've got a pic just as JJ steps up but the No 3 is just out of shot, in the next one JJ has just kicked the ball and the No 3 is a yard inside.
