  • I'll also add, from what I heard of the commentary at the beginning, if I could have picked any player of theirs to go off it would have been Trippier. Sounded like he was getting forward effectively and he's on top form at the moment. Fair or not, I reckon that red really helped us keep them out. Anyone who was there think that was the case?
  • Just arrived back in S. Manchester. The game reminded me of several results from last year, where we went 1-0 up and then shut up shop, thinking our defence would cope with anything Burnley could offer. However, in this league I'm not sure this is good enough. The ball retention after the goal was very poor, with team mates running away from the player on the ball, resulting in the only option of punting it upfield. Very pleased with the result and another 3 points. The defence played very well, with Hamer having little to do in the second half. He did make one outstanding save in the first half, flying across the goal and flicking the ball over the bar from a fiercely struck 25yd shot. His catching and fielding crosses was exemplary. We did miss Stephens, he has come on in the last few games and I'm sure his calming influence was missed today.

Jacko's pen was weak, although well directed, but a regulation save from their keeper. Haynes goal was very well taken as I thought that Hulse's header had too much on it, but he leaped well to place the ball back across the goal.

I don't like criticising debutants, I think it can take 5-10 games to see someones full potential, but Johnsson's debut was crap. It reminded me very much of Alonso against Brentford. Most of his passes were ill directed, he kept on giving away free kicks in dangerous positions, and the last straw was when he fell over on the ball to present Austin with a run on goal. CP had had enough at this point, and immediately subbed him with Fuller. Further work on the training ground required!

This reads as a fairly critical review, but hey! we won. Onwards and upwards.

Big win. Hulse deserves special mention I reckon.
Unselfish player doing a job often missed by fans. great to have a player like this, particularly when you think of some of the driftwood we've had in the number 9 shirt in recent years.

Great to see quotes like this. Hulsey was loved at Crewe, Sheffield Utd. and Derby County for exactly the same reason. He's not a prolific goascorer (1 in 3 his ratio) but he works so hard and unselfishly for the team. He's an old fashioned target-man who leads the line well, won headers, never allow central defenders to rest. If we keep him, we'll have the perfect foil for Haynes AND Fuller.

gotta agree, he puts a shift in and ive liked what ive seen from him, dont duck out of anything that needs doing when up against it, something forwards are not famous for but he seems to be up for the fight, good to see.

wonder if we moved Hollands on to soon if Eggy isn't up to it - still gotta give him time, he will need to settle in & find his feet at the club
  • JUst seen it on goal express - didnt seem like handball - about time we had a decision go for us though. We lost quite a few points earlier in the season through bad decisions

Is it only 14 days ago that we didn't know where the next point was going to come from?

I'm over the moon at the turn round in results.
    Well done to the team.

And well done to the faithful 500 who went today.
  • Must have been at different game to bigsis and altrincham. Very much like last year, we did enough against a potent attacking team at home. Pen was poorly placed to close to keep but we probed and prodded and were patient, we rode our luck sometimes and we defended excellently at times. However special mention to Mr Fuller who annoyed them, niggled them, nicked the ball away from them and protected the lead 80 yds from our line. Quality.
Happy days and much claret baiting to come.
  • Just seen the goal and pen. Grant was a mile off his line. Still a poor pen though. 3 misses for Jackson now, time for someone else.
  • How did our newish left back do?
  • Long journey back will post properly tomorrow.Typical charlton away performance under Powell which ends in a win. 6 un beaten away from home please make it 7 charlton

I thought Seabourne had a very good game. Made some important tackles and got forward when he could. He was very disciplined in his positional play and was never caught out of position. He fitted in and complimented our already excellent back line.

  • Stuck on a train between wakefield and donny. Scrappy win but its still what counts, thought we wouldnt hang on at the end.

Fight on the train infront so btp have to attend, long.
  • The train manager also sounds mexican/spanish, aint seen him yet but i imagine him to have a hat and a moustache

I was sat on the halfway line with a Burnley mate and it has to be said that they have quite a few rabid specimens. I don't think I have ever heard the 'C' word as much at a game - not something that bothers me particularly but there were a couple of primary school kids in the row in front of me, albeit that no one batted an eyelid. They were baying for everything and the ref became a scapegoat for all their frustrations.

I didn't see a handball for the penalty (brilliant play by Solly) but it all happened very quickly. As for Hulse, he went up with between two of their players and no way did he intentionally or recklessly elbow anybody.

    Try sitting in k block!
  • Average performance, Excellent three points. Getting the win was the important thing.

Pretty much agree with the earlier posts from our Northern brethren. We made hard work of winning the 11 v 10 contest over 75 minutes, not helped by the penalty miss. Central midfield is still a problem. Jonsson was well off the pace and was making elementary mistakes when CP took him off.

I thought Burnley played really well for much of the game and forced us to chase around after the ball, as opposed to us making the extra man advantage tell. Our ball retention was poor for much of the game.

We currently have a number of new combinations in the team, which need to settle-in. Seaborne/Kerkar on the left, Hulse/Haynes up front and today Jackson/Jonsson in Cent Mid. Our play will improve with better continuity. Winning is a good habit to get in to.

Nathan - any Leeds fans on your train going to Bermondsey for the weekend? They've sold 2000 and have been told to walk from Surrey Quays, as S.Bermondsey is closed....good luck with that one.
  • Great to get 3 points. Feels like some payback for some missed points this season.

Shame Jonsson was selected ahead of Dervite who has been solid away from home.
I'm sure if Wilson was fit he would be on the right with Pritch in the middle (following Stephens illness)
  • Based on the radio reports and comments of those who were there, I'd say we'd have been much more comfortable if we'd had Stephens to look around, get it out wide, and stretch them. But I'd have bitten your arm off for a point before the game, so I'm well pleased. Not sure if Jamie Reid (who was poor again) has inside info, but he suggested Wiggins and Kermo are just a couple of weeks away from a return.
  • E I e I ei o

Up the football league we go

Thanks for all the match info lads
  • 3rd win in a row with a side missing Wiggins, Wilson, Kermogant and Stephens - what isn't there to like? Sounds like a professional performance which is what we need. This squad is good enough for a push at the Premiership - could be an interesting season yet!
  • Wonderful win, I just get the feeling SCP has discovered the right formula, could be pushing POs when all are fit AP and we fix up the hone form.

If we take six points from Hudds and Posh we can really start looking up the table, we have come a long, long way from the nadir of losing 2-1 at D&R in March 2011.

    In SCP we trust.

  • Long day but home! Great result and dogged performance. Not sure why we continued to hoof the ball up to Hulse and Haynes, surely the best way to exploit 10 men is to stretch them wide? That said, thought both front men did well, linking up nicely for the goal. Overall, performance not the best but its in the book now and a wins a win. Nice to see Some familiar faces too. COYR'S !!!

I for one am not over enamoured with Stephens, but for me maybe its a case of "you don't know what you have got till its done"

Blimey, that's a turn up for the book - were you lost?

Don't see why we can't aim high? Are Palace really that much better than us?

  • When you look at the bench we had plus Stephens, Wiggins & Kermo all out we really do have a good squad.

    In CP we trust.

    And don't forget Wilson !!!
  • Finally home from another win in the North West. Not the greatest performance as has already been mentioned but can't agree we were 'lucky beyond belief'. We had the usual problem that Charlton sides seem to have against 10 men who are making up for their missing player with a great deal of energy and we did hoof the ball far too often for my liking but Burnley for all their pressing had very few chances. Our defence was solid and looked comfortable all through the match. A Burnley goal never really looked likely and I was unusually unconcerned about the amount of possession they had even when 4 minutes additional time was signalled. Mainly this was because they only had a Plan A which was to get the ball to Austin. It was so predictable that we just needed to keep him quiet, which Morrison did admirably, and Burnley were sunk.

I agree with what has been said about the midfield. Jonsson was weak and Jackson regretfully was not much better. I think his penalty taking role must be reconsidered after this latest lame effort. Kerkar and Pritchard were bright enough though and hopefully we'll have Stephens back next week.

Overall a comfortable though not rampant victory. We do look like we've finally come to terms with being in the Championshilp

    Fair summary, altrinchamaddick.

Can't really comment on the pen as it was down the far end and lots of bodies flying around in front of goal. Didn't know their man had been sent off until he'd eventually trudged the length of the pitch and reached our penalty spot in front of us. Loads of time taken with this, protests etc which probably shouldn't have put off JJ but probably did !

Felt that Eggy should have been replaced with Devite and not a 3rd striker but, hey what do I know ? Unfortunately, the substitution left our midfield a bit lightweight and as others have stated, the ball was pumped over their heads more often than not which was such a pity and did us few favours.

However, the turning point of the game was yet to come....

Having passed around the Cadbury's choc fingers followed by the humbugs at the break, I was beginning to think we might not break the deadlock and stated that further tooth destroying bullets were required. And whilst reaching into my bag, we scored !!!!!! And I missed the goal ( now awaiting my first viewing via The FL Show)

And the rest is history. MOM for me was Cort who won everything in the air , followed closely by Solly who tidied up several crucial bits of untidiness at the back, bless him. As for Danny Haynes - what a difference he's made ! long may it last.

Someone else posted about SCP's " body language" as he exited the pitch in front of the away end. Saw him kick the advertising board & although he clapped us etc , seemed rather unhappy about something....Could be the behaviour of the Burnley "lovelies" I've since read about or that he was frustrated with the way we played in the 2nd half. But when did we last play well against 10 men ? Will have to ask him on Thursday evening.

    Onwards & upwards !!!!!

  • Definite handball. Dunno what all the fuss is about.
  • ahhh fanny, fancy missing the goal reaching for the lucky humbugs out your bag, glad you did though as it clearly worked!

you should get yourself a bum-bag to keep your treats in, or as the americans call them 'fanny-packs' that way you wont have to go looking for ya bag and miss the goals ;~)
