im sure when this website was created it was made for the purpose of discussing tactics/subs/formations etc

it seems lately, anybody with a different opinion than the majority or the manager gets dug out and tried to be made out into a bad supporter.

its clear that 99.9% of the supporters on this website are fully behind CP. that doesnt mean we cant come on here and say what we might have done/not done. thats exactly what being a fan of football is all about.

when we drew with Hull, there was tons of fans not happy about CP's non subs etc, is that ok then because we didnt get all 3 points?

heaven forbid people actually post their OWN thoughts on a charlton football forum!!!

Henry, you say Ooohaahs post is spot on, which it is, but the last sentence fits the category of what Nicholas has been doing.

  • Prague, I dont disagree that its an amazing result given all of the circumstances. But I believe that without the tactical nous that we are missing, we will lose some (potentially) vital points.

'Cardiff have a major threat on their right flank' Cardiff are league leaders, they will be a major threat full stop. Solly is not comfortable LB, Morrison is not comfortable RB and Dervite breaks up a good partnership of MM & LC. Why not put, for example, Dervite LB - so only 1 player is uncomfortable.

    .

that is the best point made here about the match and I fully agree

Nicholas; 'All I'm saying is in my opinion the longer we play so many players out of position, and the longer we play players till they are blue in the face, we will get found out more in the long run. Why cant anyone have a different opinion when we win'

Exactly the point I have been trying to make.

What are everyones thoughts then, if I cannot make observations about a game in which we won, about the lack of substitions Vs Hull?

CAN I JUST MAKE IT CLEAR THAT I AM FULLY SUPPORTIVE OF CP.

Yup you can. When do you want to start? ;-)
  • Leroy, why do you think that either Nicholas, ValleyGary or I (whoever you are referring to) are 15? Ironically, we are the only ones trying to have a grown up debate / discussion without snidey remarks and insults!

Thank you for your opinion that our opinion(s) are wrong - care to elaborate?
  • apart from Dervite at c/back, I called the back 4 before the game started (thought he'd bring Taylor back in). Noone has been playing well recently, is quick and has a lot of movement about him. it is possible that Kerkar would have been run ragged and CP wanted his best right/left back available to nullify him. i know Solly is not a left back but he is no stranger to the position and does it well because he is a good defender. Morrison did not have his best game against Boro but has played r/back before. Dervite is a central defender. i can see therefore exactly why CP went the way he did defensively.

Kerkar is not a left back. he is left footed. he ducks out of headers and is not the quickest. as said above he created 3 goals from l/midfield. good decision.

i didn't think Jackson should have played against Cardiff after Saturday. wtf do i know.

i was surprised Green wasn't brought back in for the Cardiff game but CP got it right with Haynes and then Pritchard out there.

we looked a different side when we went 4-4-2. probably didn't have much option but at 0-2 i thought we were in for a tonking and that we didn't want to concede another before half time. instead he changed the formation early enough for it to have an impact. Haynes up front with Hulse made a massive difference.

Re:substitutions...well unless you've actually managed a side believe me it is not as easy as you think. all you are thinking is "i must get this right" whether you're chasing a game, happy with a draw or looking to protect a lead. CP is paid to do it ...blab, blah ..yes he is but it's hit & miss, not an exact science.

wait until all of our injuries are cleared up and all of our players are back, that's when it gets really difficult.
  • why wasnt chris powell wearing a suit on Tuesday? he always wears a suit at the Valley
  • Inwonder if the people who are 'experts' on body language are the same people who thought Solly was too small, Wilson is crap, Stephens can't play etc are the same people? If I had time I would trawl through the threads and find out. Meanwhile I remain bemused by the people on this thread.

Sonic you've hit the nail on the head , we lost on Saturday because Chris was wearing a brown suit , everyone knows its only black, blue or grey he can carry off at the Valley. :-0

Please point out where I've insulted you, or anyone else, or made a snidey remark?

You have not even had the courtesy to respond to one of my posts if we are getting picky about manners.

    Spot on
  • Len, you havent but there are some of the gods on here that have /do - perhaps my comment about snidey remarks etc was misplaced, or at least too broad tarring too many posters.

You make a valid point that perhaps Stephens was taken off as a precaution, or wrapped in cotton wool as they say. My opinion is that if this is the case, why was he taken off in the 90th minute, not the 65th when we had a 3 goal cushion?

Only Chris Powell knows the answer definitively but perhaps the original intention was for Dale to see it through and thus gain more match fitness.

If he then felt a twinge of some sort towards the end of what was a physically exhausting game that could have changed the thinking.

Powell would have undoubtedly seen that Pritch and, to a lesser extent, Jacko were dead on their feet by then so must have had a good reason for taking off Stephens instead of one of the others.

Quite possibly, although it doesnt change my opinion that the 90 minute mark is far too late for a substitution

100% correct in my opinion all it did was create confusion and a bloody great hole in the midfield

Not sure I agree. A sub in the 90th is usually made to break up the play and waste some time so you can hold on to what you have got and therefore timing is appropriate. Except with that ref that is!

ok *edit* the 90 minute mark is far too late for a substituion when you have both players in a key position struggling for the last 15 minutes. All it really does is add 30 seconds to the extra time!
  • I remain unclear why Jackson couldnt play left back and leave everyone else in their normal position. I'd like us to get back to being a strong defensive unit.
Morrison is not a full back -
I'm sure he doesn't want to play there.
I can't believe CP can be happy with the way we've defended in the last 2 games and he has to take some of the responsibility for this due to the way he's set the defence up.
Conceding 8 goals in two home games is poor and the injury excuse doesn't wash given that three of our first choice defenders were playing.
There are loads of things that
CP does well but he'd have to admit that the defence hasn't worked in the last 2 games.

  • Tbf it's a good job he didn't play Jackson LB on Tuesday!

Its ifs ands buts and maybes VG. Granted JJ probably would not have been advanced enough to score the first one but the second was a corner and no reason why he could not get in or around the box for set plays. Also we may not have conceded the corners and subsequent two goals, with three of our regular back four in their normal positions on Tuesday; who knows but I'm with the Morro back to CB and Solly to RB brigade for Sunday's match.

Now I agree as I too thought our midfield had given their all and we needed reinforcements. I would have taken off Hulse and put another defender/ midfielder on. I would have thought that all managers have a fair idea of the changes they intend to make in any given situation and midfield is the area you would be checking in the last 15mins of any game just because the demands on them are the greatest.

In this game I thought that SCP kept them all on so they could take the plaudits for such a fantastic display of sheer determination and at 90 mins thought it all over. I think 6 min extra time drained us and galvanised them and SCP recognised that he needed to do something and hence the late subs.

Not sure SCP or anyone else could have predicted that and IF we had gone on to win 5-2 we would not be having this conversation.

In my earlier posts I said I'm all for solly at RB and morro CB with perhaps Dervite at LB. Makes sense to have at least 3 of the 4 in their best positions.
