sorry, but the league table doesn't lie. We are obvoiusly a worse team than Hudderfield as they are 3rd and we are looking at the bottom 3 if we lose out next game.

If you watched Rasak off the ball you will realize he's one of the most useless players to pull on the Charlton shirt

Dont know if you went Blackpool or not but he was quality. He wasnt even that bad today done better then Hollands.

As I said watch him off the ball. It's quite obvious he is a good 'footballer' but lack of effort was just ridiculous. At one point Fuller was probably 10 yards further away than him to a loose ball, yet Rasak just stood there while fuller went and chased it down.

Also their number 11 was sitting deep in midfield, while Rasak was playing in front of our midfield....that to me says that Rasak should have been able to negate his threat. The fact that their number 11 completely bossed the game just emphasizes how useless he was.
  • Very Curbs like in that CP put Razak on Perkins 1st half which suceeded in stopping perkins dominating as he did later on. Worrying about the oppo rather than playing to our strenghts is Classic Curbs.

Razak looks like a DM, Wilson should have played RM instead of Green and Kerker is a CM not a LW.

Barnsley were a well organised tidy team but they didn't look like scoring. Then again neither did we.

Best team won, Powell made early subs and we ended with 10 ten. Sometimes you just can't win.

If we're playing 4-5-1 it probably makes more sense to play Pritchard or JJ as the more advanced midfielder. neither are perfect, but at least both have a natural inclination to try and get into the box.

Seems to me we had a 3 man midfield today, all of whom would be happy sitting deep.

4-5-1 can still work well for us, but the balance needs to be tweaked. If used right it can actually be an attacking formation.
  • Shocking
    Simple as that
  • Haven't read any of the above. To me, Powell lost this for us today. No problem with Jackson for Hollands at HT but why BWP for Razak (also Powell criticised rightly for late subs now does 2 at half time??). Fuller injured his foot mid way thru 1st half so bringing Green off using all subs was reckless. BWP's Champ career over for me. Need to start Razak at Leeds.
  • first game I've seen since the Hull draw...was really looking forward to it...and in the first 5 mins I was encouraged and thought we would muller them....................and then the wheels fell off, were nicked or we removed them voluntarily....but they run midfield......played a quick neat passing game and we were chasing shadows....however defence stood strong and just before HT we had a great chance to take the lead from a fk...but their keeper made a fantastic save....2nd half same thing...a good 5 mins and then we dropped deeper and deeper...Green mistake for their goal...a complete nail on pen when Solly went down in the area..not given....ref was poor...but no excuses.... we got beat and to be honest over the 90 mins they were the better team....and now Fuller injured!! sorry to say JJ made no impact and I would have rather seen Hulse on...something to me is missing from last season......perhaps off field stuff is affecting them....who knows, but we need a plan B and dont seem to have one.
    Night all

Couldn't disagree with any of that.

  • After calm reflection and taking into account all the above - WE WERE SHITE! Barnsley out-fought, out-passed and out-played us by a big margin. Few Charlton players came out of that with any credit at all. Solly not bad but far from his best. Ditto Morrison. Razak appalling. Kerkar flimsy. Green hiding all afternoon. Fuller not bad but FFS change the studs so he don't keep falling over.
  • Typical football-fan reactionary nonsense regarding Razak. Looks a capable player and the bashing of 19 year old playing out of position is ridiculous. Did seem a strange way of using him having him furthest forward. Out of the three CMs surely Stephens would be most suited to that...

I don't think Norwich will let us have Grant Holt on loan - we could ask I suppose ! Also Fuller will be out for a few weeks so I think you'd better rip up your team sheet and start again.

Since our strength is defending, we were playing to our strengths. Until the second half...

you won't win anything by defending - you got to score goals to win games.

Apart from the League 1 title last season.
  • Didn't go, but spoke to a Geordie who attended the game as a neutral. He said we were the better side and Fuller was bullied throughout

LOL, Hulse... was watching the Norwich game at the time.

    Hulse BWP
  • They just didn't seem to want it bar the first ten minutes.

The amount of times Fuller was free but we didn't switch the ball was ridiculous. He was probably my man of the match. Looked like he cared. Solly disadvantaged playing on left when attacking... so why were we continually playing on that wing, when we had Wilson and Green on the other? Thought Razak was alright and surprised he went off. Hollands completely out of his depth. Kerkar tried but seemed SO SLOW. And I make oohaah right about some of those headers he 'went for'.

Some neutrals were with us and some of their comments were:

    "Charlton look completely flat"
    "Barnsley deserved to win"
(Don't think anyone can argue with those two)
    "Good atmosphere"
"Not a penalty, tackled from behind but got the ball"

The body language of many of our players really did remind me of the Reed/Pardew/Parkinson eras.

We are sorely missing Kermorgant, Wiggins and even Taylor (to keep Moro and Cort on their toes, both looked mediocre today).

What else? My god the majority of Barnsley fans we came across - looked like there's been some severe in-breeding going on, along with tracksuit bottoms and black shoes, all sorts!

    I'm DREADING Millwall away.

That blonde bloke was a class above, absolutely everywhere, bossing the game, and whenever we had half a chance, snuffing it out. Oh for a player like that in our midfield!

Almost a full house... good old Charlton!

  • Outplayed really from start to finish, can't blame morrison, cort or solly(who fought hardest throughout). Hamer could do nothing about the goal either. We have no real depth creatively though. Long season but its better than yeovil and stevenage isn't?

Can't believe some fans are still so deluded; It's seriously embarrassing. We are a league 1 team with a couple of additions, with inexperienced players and management. This year is about survival not promotion. wake up and the season will be a lot easier to deal with.

The concern being that if we do not pick up points at home then survival won't happen. Barnsley will be there at the bottom of the table shake out at the end of the season we have to pick up points against the likes of them.

  • can't be bothered with a long, drawn out diagnosis of what went wrong..............just want to say that we are abject & inept up front and wouldn't score against an under 11 side !!!! Tell me how many times did we make their goal keeper work ??? From memory he saved a 2 free kicks (1 in each half) and a couple of shots very late on. Just not good enough.

Only thing saving us atm is that Ipswich & Perborough are very poor and Paul Jewell will be gone by next week. I reckon if we finish 4th bottom it will only be because a club goes into admin and are docked 10 points............

    we are doomed.

I wasn't there, and didn't listen as I was at a party and it was clearly a terrible performance but that diffinitive, as if fact based, assessment made me laugh ...

To right us off entirely is comical to me ...

And so the 'rose tinted' vs the 'realists' kicks off in ernest ...

    Long tough season ahead...

  • My only statement about this game is why oh why did he go 4 4 2 in the second half, at least with 4 4 1 1 we had held are own. Are midfield not goodenough to play 4 4 2.
  • I rarely post on here so I'll make what seems to be the usual introduction that I don't know anyone at the club so have no inside info.

Because of our recent past, although the Premiership seems a lifetime ago, plus the success of Norwich and Southampton the crowd at the Valley seems to think we should be walking games against teams like Barnsley. Unfortunately we're a poor championship team whilst the teams we're playing are solid teams for this level. The midfield isn't strong enough; the only way round this is to persevere with 4-5-1. This isn't easy on the eye & is negative. But from what I've seen we need to start grounding out draws at home, with the chance of nicking a winner at the end. Otherwise yesterday is going to become all too familiar. I reckon the 5 that started today can all play Championship football but as a team they don't complement each other. The midfield constantly gets over run, we're lacking a player than can sit at the back and break things up. Other teams have players that push the limits and rough the other teams up, with Kermogant out we lack someone that can do this. On their day Green & Kerkar are both ok players but they are both too inconsistent. He seems like a nice person but from what I've seen Pritchard isn't the player to bring on with 25 minutes to go to turn the game round.

As a manager Powell is still learning, at times he seems comes across as tactically naïve and is probably too nice. To move forward he needs to shake up the team, I know Wright-Philips goals got us promoted last year but he’s always struggled at this level. I forgot we had Hulse on loan; it’s time he got a run out. I’m not syaing Pwell should go but, & I’ll get shot down for saying this, but he needs to have a look at Palace, Freedman is a young manager so he’s got someone experienced in that he can learn from. Powell doesn’t have this with his backroom staff. Last year the team could outplay most others in League 1 so these shortcomings were papered over.

Starting with one up front gave out the wrong message.

Should have played Hulse and Fuller.

Totally agree. Both Premiership experience could have given many problems to the Barnsley defence.
But we also need crosses from the flanks for them... something i've heard we seems unable to do !!!

  • Can't see a single think about Razak that makes him any better than we already have . He looks lazy and unfit to me and I can totally see why he was taken off.

Were you at Blackpool? If not you've just judged a player based on 45 minutes of football.

I personally feel the same about Hollands who has just consistently not looked good enough for this level. I can't see any reason he should be in centre-midfield when he have Jackson, Pritchard and now Razak who can all play there.

No. No we're not. We were last season - they have a whole new team now.
