I think a lot of people are forgetting the fact that Wagstaff was actually given the task of being our most senior attacker in yesterday's game, being paired up with an inexperienced (though talented) 18 year old up front.
He got himself a goal out of it. Not really sure what some people are really expecting?
I give you the following statistics: In only one league game last season did both Green and Wagstaff start on the pitch together. I suspect that trend will continue. Green - a goal every 12.7 games (In only 18% of those games has he come on as a substitute, the rest were starts). Wagstaff - a goal every 6.3 games (39% of his games have been substitute appearances) The stats for assists that I found have Green on 10 and Wagstaff on 9 but I think that's over their whole Charlton career in League One not just last season. In which case Green's about three times as productive as Wagstaff on that front. (But don't forget that Wagstaff has been a late sub in many of his appearances). Last season Green picked up 9 yellow cards, whereas Wagstaff got 2 plus 1 red (the latter was very harsh indeed) . Anyway, if you simplistically took those figures and extrapolated them into a full league season, Green would get 3 goals plus around 12 assists. (We could safely assume he'd be suspended for a couple of games), while Wagstaff would get 7 goals and maybe around 3 assists. So, perhaps there's not much to chose between them! What would be interesting to know is which of the two Solly prefers to have in front of him.
In my opinion wagstaff will struggle in this league, I cannot see him being a regular squad member. I personally think our team should set up like this: Hamer Solly Cort Morrison Wiggins Cook-left midfield Jackson- centre midfield Hollands-centre midfield Haynes- right midfield Bwp Kermorgant
On the bench Kerkar Wagstaff Smith Pritchard ( maybe pushing for first team ) Stephens Wilson Sullivan ?

4 midfielders on the bench. No centre back. Smith instead of Haynes? Your bench needs a rethink.
Special mention for Green who was utterly inept from start to finish.
.
Thats it - last time I post on here !!!!!!!!!!!
(for those of you not at the match , Green hit the post with a great shot, had a CORNER cleared off the line (may have hit the post, but certainly was going in) and was instrumental in most things we did - esp second half)
If I remember correctly, Clem Snide (great name - suits you !!) dissed Bover ater the Welling game.
As I said - I've had it on here - I haven't read any posts after Clems insightful thoughts on our team, so there may be some that acyually tell you more about how we dominated for large parts of the game & on another night would have scored 4 or 5.
Golf it's all about opinions. I thought Green was diabolical. Hit the post with a shot, yes, tried to score with every corner, didn't track back leaving Wilson isolated, looked less and less interested the more the game went on ...
I will admit i prefer Wagstaff to Green(i was very excited when he signed last year) but i never can understand the people who have an issue with Wagstaff moaning, one of my all time favourite players was a hard working winger who loved a good moan, im assuming those same people all had an issue with John Robinson at the time or just a bad memory.
My Charlton supporting mates still lovingly enjoy talking about his moaning and part of the reason we liked him so much at the time, just passion and character, you certainly can't ever claim him or waggy dont care.
Cannot compare the two - Waggy stands around moaning in no mans land whereas Robbo gives his all including running back even if it was to argue in the ref's face! One has passion and the other ???
Completly disagree as i love the passion of both players, just think some people need to stop having the double standard's due to there dislike to one player.
pre season friendly atmosphere and not a good performance. don't give a monkies. wish it could of finshed in the 90. thought cook looked good. some flashes of good play but our strength in depth is going to be tested this season but still confident of comfortable safety. looking forward to some decent teams coming to valley even if we do lose a few and i'm sure we'll give a few teams a shock when they visit us. no more league 1 teams for at least 5 months whoop whoop
Actually thought we played ok. Last year in the same cup we played long ball v Preston and tried to battle our way through the game. Last night we created some decent chances, some involving some decent passing moves, all with 3 new signings and a young striker making his first start for us.
Cook looks promising, clearly not a striker (as he is called in the media). I expect him to regularly be in the 18. Like the look of him on the left, but probably has a better chance of breaking into the team if he's comfortable on the right.
Kerkar along with Cook both have a bit of pace (nothing like Haynes though) and are comfortable running with the ball - something we don't really have in our midfield. Kerkar doesn't really look like a CM to me, still hope we can sign a proven player for that position.
Thought Green was better than some games last season. Got in some decent positions and had a few shots. Put in a couple of sliding tackles and won the ball. Clever free kick, was unlucky with that. Usual frustrating mistakes but I've seen far worse from him.
Wagstaff did what he usually does when played up front. Didn't look like he suited the position but gave it a go. Might play behind the striker if we're defending a lead but clearly he played there last night as Haynes was injured and Powell chose not to risk BWP or Yann.
Smith had some good moments, closer to the first team than most youngsters but needs games. Some good link up play but not as physical as you'd want from a big target man in the Champ or League 1. Can see him getting there in time, will probably go out on loan again, which will be good for him.
Evina did ok, nothing more or less, as he usually does, but like Smith he needs games.
Think Wilson will be fine as a squad player. Based on last night I don't think he'll be first choice RM as some predicted.
Had a chance or two gone in we'd have won and Cook & Kerkar would have been hyped up as brilliant signings.
It doesn't work like that. If it had been Charlton in the draw as opposed to Orient, the gods of the draw would have set up a different opponent. Trust me, when the wings of the Charlton butterfly flap it brings about a different hurricane than the Orient butterfly. :-)
Not sure I agree with you, Henry. I didn't go to the game so can't comment on their relative merits last night but, reading the thread, it seems to me that Green (rather than Wagstaff) is fast becoming a whipping boy amongst fans.
oh god not that poxy phrase again. we went one whole season without it. good while it lasted.
might as well use scape goat for old times sake.
If you're going to pick people up on the words they use please have the courtesy of starting your sentences with a capital letter old chum.
Negative: SCP getting sent off Blue and white sponsorship boards Our team not being very good at football
Excuse me but when did we become a not very good football team? Where did this happen? And if so why support such a not very good football team when you could be sitting at home watching Eastenders?

I think people claiming we don't have any strength in depth are fundamentally missing the point. We're Charlton, a newly promoted Championship team with no money. And yet despite this we played an entirely second string team except for our keeper, one centre back and one midfielder who wasn't fully fit and still drew against a team we lost against last year in our first game of the season. We aren't Arsenal, we can't sign a whole squad of talented reserves to compete in these matches. If anything this match proved we DO have strength in depth, as we're very unlikely to go into a match with 8 first team players injured. Sure Evina is a bit dodgy and maybe Wilson didn't impress but we've got talented back-up players who can compete when they're needed. I think we'll actually be grateful for the depth we have over other teams as the season wears on

Kerkar looked a classy player first half, drifted completely out of the game in the 2nd though. Looks far too lightweight for this league.
Wilson looked okay going forward but looked shocking at the back

Just an opinion from a bloke at the match.
