Football is a game of fine lines. It's all well and good saying we weren't good enough last night, but actually the first half performance and some of the great attacking play should have seen us out of sight by half time, and everyone would now be commending the strength in depth we have.
Maybe should have brought Hayes on in the 2nd half, he surely has a point to prove as he must be looking for a League One club to sign him.
I love Chris Powell as much as anyone, but he really needs to grow up. What's the point of getting sent off and risking touchline bans and fines in the League Cup? We need to be a disciplined team, and that starts with an example from the club's most important representative.
Don't get the Green terrible stuff, had more shots and looked more dangerous than Wagstaff, and I don't know how anyone can try and claim he looked disinterested and wasn't trying, the poor fella was trying too hard to get a goal.
And why shouldn't he try and score from a corner? The keeper couldn't handle it, it created opportunities for a goalmouth scramble and one nearly went in save for a lucky rebound off the post!
I'd rather watch someone have 5 or 6 shots and be unlucky not to score than have one shit deflected effort and do sod all for the rest of the game....
I would rather have someone who scored tbh... Fair enough it was a deflected shite goal but waggy scored. Green is terrible no bottle in challenges and no creativity.
I think I read it on here but annoying nonetheless (is that a word?) you can't buy a matchday programme in the club shop , I had arrived late and went in there after the match(it was so empty) and the club shop will not be stocking them this year which I find odd. Also I asked about kits for 4/5 year olds and Nike don't do kits that small or they're not doing them for us anyway so we have a fake/moody copy of a kit by Avec for the under 6's ...... Seems a bit naff really , reminds me of my first kit which was a bit of a sew on job back in the late 70s
I was expecting great things from the club shop only to be left very disappointed, it looked like a run down version of what we had. Is it yet to be finished or is that it?
After all the "we are doomed" stuff on here for months its final got to me. I thought lets get the season started and if we aint got a couple of good quailty (at this level) signings i would agree that there is somethinwhat wrong at board level.
So after yet another zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz reserve team put out at in a Cup game and we get put on our arses and out of a cup at the first hurdle---------i have so say the doom mungers have won.
Big squad not at the level of quaility that will keep us going at this level----no sighnings to come and a HOPE that the team spirit which we managed to get last season will keep going through what is going to be a long old season.
As for all the "glad we are out" " glad we rested (f++king rested !!!!) players" XYZ im sure Birmingham feel the same way after they won 5 v1 and their fans and team are now buzzing looking forward to playing us.
This is CAFC and only we could destroy the buzz of geting 101 points in a matter of a few weeks.
Wonder why he was so upset after fielding the reserves in the cup for yet another serving of drag the fans out for a serving of midweek pointless cup crap? (of course brum away is more important i know) praps he's frustrated with the depth of his squad. I left at 90 knowing full well the likely outcome
Oohaah, my missus come home last night with two shirts for the boys aged 2-3, so what you were told seems wrong mate.
I did have a look around and was pointed in the direction of the "Avec" kits and bought a replica one for 4/5 year old and there is no Nike sign on it and being fair although I was half asleep it did look the same as the Nike kit but 99% certain not branded by anyone except label in neck .. Will check later Are your kids kit Nike or Avec ?
A comment: If we are in financial difficulties shouldn't we be working on the basis that we're not going to get promoted anyway but want to sweat out as much money as possible from a cup run? So the board would instruct the manager to put out his best team in a cup match wouldn't it? So that's a positive isn't it?
Okay, last night was not a great experience. First, a very poor performance from Wilson. Gave away a penalty, stupid corner conceded, poor distribution, missed a penalty. Anyone on here that said selling a right back to fund the purchase of a forward would be a good move might need to revise their opinion. If I was Wilson's coach I'd tell him to stop twiddling with his hair every few seconds and concentrate on his football instead. I might even tell him to get his fecking hair cut so it wasn't such a distraction. Still, Sweaty Balmer had a very poor debut and he turned out okay in the end. Cook and Kerkar did okay but none of the secondry players gave any indication that they could be anything other than a short-term stand-in for a regular first-teamer. Smith seems to me to be an improving/maturing player but is still some way off a first team berth.
Green put in a disappointing performance. A series of comedy throw-ins (does the ball not dry off properly on the thin tacky material the new shirts are made from?), poor corners and crosses were not offset by one excellent free-kick that came back off the woodwork.
The new shirts look like a cheap knock-off rather than a genuine item. I wouldn't clean my car with one let alone wear one.
SCP needs to understand that at this level the quality of the officals will not be great (much like the quality of the team he put out) and should have been much more relaxed about the decisions and not got himself sent to the stands - very unprofessional. It seems to me that the club is now paying to run a large squad which includes some rather mediocre players that can never be successful first team regulars at Div 2 level. I do wonder whether this "two players for every position" policy is the right one or whether fewer players with a couple of competent utility players would be a better option as we seem to be on a limited budget.
So, let's hope the first team do better in the Midlands on saturday.

Yep deffo hope its not finished , seemed pretty chuff what was available
Just another one of those crap cup games ( you all know what i mean ) cannot take anything out of the game, season starts saturday! i will make judgement on kerkar, wilson and co after ten games have passed.

is your user name meant to be ironic? coating the team the manager and the kit.

But we could get relegated.
Personally, i think last nights team selection was CP's & CP's only.
Players like Hamer, Evina, Taylor, Wilson (Stevenage POTY?), Green, Wagstaff should be able to compete against Leyton Orient, a L1 team, whic we pretty much did. if was a league game we would have got a point (as we did with quite a few teams at home last season) and we lost on Pens. Not the end of the world.
Players didnt play to their best last night, changes will be made for the better on saturday....move on.

Agree with this. Birmingham go into the fixture on a high - I bet they can't wait for Saturday. Whereas Chris Powell now has a job on his hands to get our players in the right frame of mind.
Also, I don't agree that the League Cup is meaningless - it's not the JPT! I'd be proud to see that cup in Charlton's trophy cabinet.
It was a scratch team and while there are enough good players in their it wasn't a team.
We look exposed every time they had a corner that was the source of their goal.
Wilson started well, was strong and in control but then seemed to get caught in the headlights. Got caught wrong side too often. Thought the pen was harsh at first look but he and Taylor shouldn't have allowed the play to make that run. He can do better.
Kerker and Cook started well but faded. Both did some good stuff on the ball but too often were unsure when we were not in possesion. Kerker's corners were good.
I'm not a big fan of Green but he started really well. Sharp passing and movement, even made a tackle but he also showed why he's not, to quote CP "got used to playing for a club like Charlton". Shots from long range when he had other options, gave the ball away, two fluffed throw ins. Hope the Swindon coaches were impressed.
The contrast with Waggy who plays for the team and scored is clear to see.
Smith worked hard but I didn't think he had much impact and didn't win much in the air. Young and needs more games.

Or another way to look at it is that Brum put out a first 11 against a league 2 side, fair play they won big but say we had put out a strong side and won 3-0 last night would we be crowing about it that much?
I'd much rather we have our first choice players fully fit and rested ahead of a tough away trip on Saturday.
Would be nice if one year the fringe players got the chance to play more than the traditional one cup game in each half of the season. The competitive action might make them... more competitive. Not even got the chance of a few run outs in the FA cup rounds one and two any more.
Oh and as a fan it would be nice if we made it to just one semi final before I die. Is that too much to ask? Even the Nigels can manage that. In over 40 years I think we have managed just 3 or 4 FA QFs and zero in the League Cup. I seriously doubt that any of the top 40 teams in the country have a worse record.
I went to the game Di Canio saved in the very last minute vs Luton and decided no more of that. No wonder we get such low crowds in these competitions - they are devoid of all hope.....
With you all the way. Like you, I've spent over 40 years trudging down to the Valley (and Sellout and West Ham) and am now convinced I will also die without ever seeing us having a proper cup run.
In fact, I will go further. I am totally pi**ed off with seeing us play reserve teams in the League Cup (and sometimes even in the FA Cup). This is one of the few competitions we realistically could have any success in and yet every year we treat it as a joke. Why, for Christ sake? Are our first team players, who have just had a 3 month break, incapable of playing 4 games in 10 days? Are we such a big team that the Cup is irrelevant to us?
If we had got through this round, and the next, then there is always the possibility of drawing one of the big boys like Moan Utd or Chelsea at home. A near sell-out crowd under floodlights - always good - would be virtually assured and the revenue, if what we are to believe about the state of the club's finances is true - would come in very handy at the moment. Or indeeed at any moment.
Our recent League Cup performances are a disgrace. In recent years, we've gone out to Preston, Shrewsbury, Hereford, Yeovil, Luton and Wycombe. And now Leyton Orient. (And don't even mention Northwich Victoria in the FA Cup). Surely, the time is for someone senior in the club to say to the management and players start taking this competition seriously.
Sorry, but really not impressed with the way Chris Powell went about this last night. 5,000 CAFC fans took the time and trouble to turn up last night and deserve better.
Right, stand back and await attacks from all those who say only thing that matters is the League, must protect our players for the long season ahead etc.
@golfaddick if you bother to read the rest of the comments on here you'll see that I wasn't the only one not impressed with Green. So why aren't you personally digging out any of the other posters?
Countless corners to no one, constantly out of position and dragged inside. Thought his freekick was special as well.
As you are never posting on here again, I wont expect a response.
Running around a bit and a 2% success rate from setplays does not imo account for a good performance.
As for the Bover comments, get over yourself. Hanging onto a comment that made weeks ago. As I already told you, I didnt say he was poor or diss him, I simply said I wasnt overly impressed.
Suggest you get a hobby. As you won't be on here anymore you'll have some free time on your hands.
agree with sam3110. Don't understand all the Green was terrible stuff. Hit the post twice, put in a few decent crosses, first half had a couple of shots narrowly wide, thought he was ok, not brilliant, but ok.
Positives Cook, Smith and Kerkar although all faded but I can accept that, escpecially from the two youngsters. I expect Cook to feature a lot this season from the bench, Kerkar too. Smith may need to go on loan but he has something and long term will be a good aquisition. Hollands needed that 120 minutes, whether he can start at Brum though is another matter.
I think the Danny Green criticism is a little overboard. No it wasn't his best game but he did manage to get himself in dangerous positions at times in the second half. People seem to have completely forgotten that he hit the post as well?
The night for me was tarnished by four idiots at the back of the East Stand who wanted to put a downer on absolutely everything. Saying we were going to lose before the game even kicked off, saying how we're going to get smashed 4-1 on penalties etc. We do have some miserable fans who really offer very little in terms of 'support' sometimes.
church-lane I'd have thought you could probably tell from the fact that I bothered to pitch up for the match that my user name is not ironic. So tell me precisely what was wrong with what I said. Was Wilson's performance anything other than poor? Did you see I hoped that it was a blip? Was Green's performance anything other than disappointing? (note the different descriptive words I used there?) Do you disagree, then that he should be doing so much more but isn't - that's why he disappoints? Do you think the kit is top quality? Do you think SCP's behaviour was all that great and helped the team? Did you spot the hope of an improved performance when saturday comes?
We just seemed to be so depressed as supporters...
I know I'm rose tinted, and I am, I am very happy bloke and will forgive Charlton almost anything... but to see people coming on here moaning and crying about a bog standard cup game that is irrelevant to us with a reserve strength team, days after the first team just did fulham at fulham and Lisbon at Lisbon... I just don't get it.
And i don't get why you don't support someone else either, Charlton are going to be terrible a lot of the time, thats us, that what you get... this season is survival priority number one, anything else a bonus... but of course that won't be enough for plenty of the 'supporters'...
If this is the reaction to something that doesn't matter, imagine as the first set of boos ring out when we blow something that does matter ...
Don't understand modern managers' obsession with rotation. What is the point of having a pre-season in which you largely play a full team then drop your best three players for a cup game. Don't think it is necessarily a reflection of how the season goes, but it's a poor performance, particularly from a manager who could do no wrong.
So as someone who didn't go, the impression that the squad is paper thin and not up to it
I wouldn't say so. Our squad was a similar size last season, yet the 2-0 home loss to Preston in the League Cup wasn't exactly a reflection of our season was it?
