  • Sorry mate lots of innuedo's , bit dis respectful to other lifer's, why members only also when so sure of facts.

Bit unnecessary mate. Read my opening post again, which was about how much I enjoyed watching him last season and how gutted I would be if he moved. I then got asked if I thought it was a possibility and I said yes.

Don't really see innuendo in that, nor do I understand the members only dig, because it isn't.

Like carly burn's post earlier, seems like if you offer any form of comment you have to get it proof read and through a team of approvers first.

For the record, for those that read something, then blow it up and turn it into something else, I
never said he had gone, and I never said he is has.definately going. I have heard it is a distinct possibility(won't say where from, so make your own judgement), but even if you take that out of the equation, look at the facts.

Of all the minimal amount of activity we have done this season, we bring in a right back. We take three right backs away on tour and in our only meaningful psf so far, we played him completely out of position in favour of the other two.

If Hughes is still here, that means we have four right backs on the books.

If you believe that the ownership / financing plan has gone off course (which I do), then some money has to come from somewhere.
Some of the comments that made me post have been removed/deleted ? Why ?
  • I think the fear is that any money we get wont be spent on stregthening the side.....or not the lions share shall we say.

there was only one comment removed, that was plaaayer being rude to carter, and I removed it because it might not have been obvious to others that they are good mates and he was joking. Thats all.
  • Before the razor blades come out AGAIN:
1/ most clubs are SELLING clubs.
2/ We are and have been for the vast majority of our modern game a selling club.
3/ We have sold to balance the books before and will again.
4/ If some one made a daft bid for Solly---we should sell.
5/ If we are potless-----we should sell.
6/ If CP needs to strengthen and we are potless----we should sell.

If we got Baldock and £1.5 million with 500K going on two loan players and the big shilling going to plug a cash flow issue then i dont have an problem with it.

CP has been around long enough to know the above and he also knows (which some seem toforget on here) the Board backed him all the way in his first full season 20 players coming in etc.

If on the other hand we sell Solly and end up with two has beens from Preston etc etc we will at least know how far we are in the kak.
  • We sold Billy Bonds to Wet Sham, a massive mistake....let's not make the same mistake again!
  • What about Solly for £1.5m and Baldock, then Jenkinson on a season long loan from Arsenal? Just a thought. I have no friends ITK.
  • Let's keep a bit of perspective. I like him as much as the next fan but he's had one good season in League One. Selling him will not rip the heart out of the team like it did Parker. If it means we can strengthen other areas then so be it.

Maybe, in three years time, we will be having the same debate over Jordan Cousins and do you know what? We will sell him as well, because that's just where we are in the football pecking order and probably always well be.

A mistake, yes, in that we got nowhere near enough for him. But suppose we'd extracted a better price for him, strengthened the squad a bit more with the cash. The 68-69 season, where we finished 3rd, might have turned out differently.

That's how I feel it panned out with Bowyer. We got decent money, got Kinsella as a replacement for a fraction of that, got Clive, avoided selling Rufus, etc etc. I don't want to see any of our best players leave, but we have to accept that a Champ club has little chance of keeping them if a Prem offer is on the table. So whether or not the Solly rumours have any substance, if he goes, there's no point getting too upset about it, IF we get a decent sum.

Yes, he's one of us (though a Gooner in fact), but it's just business....

To some extent I agree but we also had Bob Curtis coming through in the Youth team ready to take his place . Is this similar in that in the medium / long term Jordan Cousins is ready to come through ?

If I'm dead where's my RIP thread?!

I seem to remember Slater stating early after the take over that part of the clubs new philosophy was to bring on young players and sell them to help with the running costs of the club.?

When did he or any other board member say that because I don't remember them saying anything about what their strategy was or is.

A lot of people on here speculated that that was the strategy but I don't think Slater ever said it. Happy to be proved wrong.
  • have we sold him yet?

Maybe not quite like the way TEL is telling it.
But he definitely said ' living by our means '.
So I guess selling a couple of players to buy a few more could quite easily be construed that way.

"Living within our means" can mean a lot of things and most importantly depends on what our means were when we had Kevin Cash's money and what they are now we don't.

But 'living within our means' is just standard politician talk anyway, he clearly said that to dampen down expectations that the new owners were backed by a Russian tycoon or Saudi prince with billions to splash out.

i.e. we have a budget, and will buy and sell accordingly, which is what virtually every other football club does.

(Except Portsmouth, Leeds, Rangers...... ;-) ).

Exactly my point. It can mean a whole multitude of things. But by saying it, he's covered himself for all eventualitys. Nobody can say we wasn't warned.
  • Is this definitely happening?

Would have preferred to have sold a relative unknown from the academy like Jordan Cousins.

I heard that Powell isn't sure whether Solly will cut it in the Championship. Three Prem clubs made enquiries at the end of the season for him as we were looking to sign Wilson. To me this sounds like a footballing decision if it happens of course. It will be Powells decision.

Find that hard to believe, he's one we can be confident will have no problems stepping up a division.
This isn't a joke but apparently Powell has issues with his height.

When Powell was at Bromley he was singing the praises of Solly & recalling how he chuckled to himself every time someone took on Solly, because he knew they wouldn't get past him.

I don't believe for one minute that Powell would be happy to let him go & I'd love to know your "source".
  • Spot on Covered End....spot on!
  • Agree, CE .

A "lucky" raffle winner at last season's POTY is/was due to present the actual Cup to Chris Solly at the first Saturday home match of the season . Someone joked " That's if he's still with us !" to which SCP replied " He will be" ...

IMHO SCP had NO intention of letting his player move anywhere & I'm as sure as I can be that this is the last thing he would have agreed to IF he was offered any options.

Whilst I hope Solly stays I doubt that it will be Chris Powell's decision, if the finances are that dire he will be told he has to be sold much like other managers have in the past.

Whoever made that joke in front of Chris Powell sounds like bit of an idiot.

Or maybe they knew/suspected something we didn't.....
  • Or maybe they were just joking!

As I think Freud once said "sometimes a cigar, is just a cigar".
  • I clearly recall meeting Lennie Lawrence before a pre-season friendly away at Exeter City many years ago (Ben Tegg was there, and he was hilarious). Lennie had just heard that Paul Williams would have to go, and he was cheesed off to say the least. Curbs and Gritt would not have been happy with the sale of Robert Lee, and later Lee Bowyer, and later Phil Parkinson would not have wanted to see Jonjo Shelvey go either.

It is hardly ever the decision of Charlton managers who gets sold (it might be different with some managers who control everything and benefit from 'bungs'). I have no doubt at all that Chris Powell would love to keep Chris Solly, as would we all. Unfortunately, Chris Powell is in thrall to the finances and he may complain long and loud, but if bills have to be paid, bills have to be paid.
  • Obviously can't say. If Solly is sold it will be Powells decision. I hope this puts the conspiracy theories to bed on this one.
