There was a story a month or so a go that said west ham were interested in Solly. And then there was a story saying we were interested in Baldock. Now people are connecting the dots.
In 1999/2000 we sold Danny Mills and the money meant that the rest of the team could stay together and that proved wise - and we got promoted at the end of that season.
We should bear in mind that the Mysterons ran up a massive loss last year - something around £4-5m and I'm assuming that a loss will be projected for this year.
Solly will go - it's just when and what the deal is, in the meantime we have Wilson and Jordan Cousins coming through and Andy Hughes can do a job, so we have several options at right-back already at the club and if the in-coming cash stabilises the accounts and gives CP some room in the transfer market or allows him to strengthen the squad with a few timely loans here and there then that's all well and good. Ultimately what matters is what we do with the money and whether it's used positively.
Except we were bringing a squad down from a higher level then - we're doing the opposite now and need to strengthen.
Mills' £4m sale did more than just keep the squad together. £3m was reinvested in the team - we brought in Dean Kiely, Greg Shields, John Salako, Andy Todd and Matty Svensson.
My biggest worry is that for the first time in years last season we had two proper full backs, not your giant who couldn't cut it at centre half. It transformed the way we played and was a big factor in our promotion, in my view. Wilson may be a very good player, but let's be honest it's an exchange that leaves our squad weaker. If the money doesn't go back into the squad and invested cleverly then I fear we might have a long season ahead of us.
And let's face it - if the money man has withdrawn, big losses might not be sustainable without player sales to make up the difference.
Murray personally guaranteed the £840k bank overdraft at 30 Jun 2011 - this was slightly curious given it would now have been six months since Baton was 90% acquired. In other words why would the overdraft be guaranteed solely by him, rather than Baton (of which he only owns 10%)?
I still find that very strange.
It's not really that strange. The guarantee could be part of his investment i.e. not direct cash, or the Bank may have requested no change to the guarantor as they would have to have agreed to roll the loan when the club was taken over.
I seem to remember Slater stating early after the take over that part of the clubs new philosophy was to bring on young players and sell them to help with the running costs of the club.?
When did he or any other board member say that because I don't remember them saying anything about what their strategy was or is.
A lot of people on here speculated that that was the strategy but I don't think Slater ever said it. Happy to be proved wrong.

Is Andy Hughes still at the club? He hasnt featured at all pre-season.
that's true - just been looking and can't find a mention of Solly anywhere, I even checked for any rhyming slang that would mean Solly - like 'sunday jolly' or something
Hughes has been treated pretty shoddily to be honest.
Was playing very well when Russell took his place, and I don't blame him if he got the hump and commented on the situation.
I'd disagree that he's been treated 'shoddily'. I've heard that he was absolutely gutted about not keeping his place in the team, but other tactics and players that Powell used were equally successful as results show.
Plus to have a 2 year contract for a Championship club ages 34 is pretty decent. Believe he's living with Ben Hamer at the moment.
As far as I know Andy Hughes is still at the club - he signed a two year contract last year.
Andy Hughes cannot do a job in the Championship at full back. He was dire in the JPT, against Brentford. He was excellent as our defensive midfielder earlier last season but at fullback he aint good enough. I would rather have Francis as full back!!!

Dropped from a winning team whilst in good form, for a loanee, never to be seen again.
Not included in a single pre-season game.
Still got a year left on his contract. At the very least he should be given some game time with the development squad.
I thought he did very well in the holding midfield role. Very surprised he didn't get more games there to be honest. Not a great right back though, holding midfielder is definitely his best position
When we got 1mil from cardiff for Mark Hudson I thought at the time it was a very good bit of business. If Solly goes I suspect it will be 'undisclosed' and we may never know how much, or where the money ends up. However if the transfer (if it happens) is fully out in the open, and we feel that the deal is very good for Charlton, then we have to accept it. My prediction is undisclosed, and the money is used to pay outstanding bills.
And the gold medal goes to.....SETH !
Thanks Fanny, but I don't deserve it, mainly because we are not certain that Chris Solly will actually go soon. I am less confident that he will go, than I am confident that we're in a structural and probably financial mess. I think the situation at the club is very very fluid, not necessarily in an overall good way, but it seems to have a different perspective on a daily basis. Solly may well stay, money may well be found from somewhere or another to finance the signing of a player that would settle the nerves of the majority of Charlton supporters. The above record of accounts and our liabilities are stark though, we are not able to trade at a break-even figure, and we depend on injections of money to survive. Who or where that money comes from is either a continuing mystery, or will become a clear reality if we sell off the players. Given the 'adjustments' in the people who wotk for the club the backdrop of this fluid situation is worrying to many of us. In the end, the only game in town where those of us who are deeply worried is the fledgeling Supporters Trust. I am confident that whatever the nature of such a trust everything will be clear and on the table for all to see. Not much is going to suprise me now, but I have one further morsel for thought regarding player transfers. If we get somebody in, will we be 100% sure that it will be the choice/decision of Chris Powell? Given last seasons Alonso situation I am not really convinced that movement in the playing staff is all under SCP's control.

On Andy Hughes. I think he is a decent honest footballer who doesn't pretend to anything he is not. I also think he will give everything he can in every situation, and conducts himself with grace and dignity. I also think he loves to be able to play football, and I have been told he is a fitness fanatic. It is not for me to decide if he is good enough to play in the team.
Said it before but seeing as how we are on the subject. Would be very happy to see Hughes off the bench on a cold evening oop north when you are under the cosh in last twenty.
Hayes was dropped from an unbeaten team and was called back early from a successful loan to play one game. Plus he has only played for the CAFC XI sides so far (he's at Bury tonight as well)
Shoody? Perhaps but then you don't rate Hayes but you do rate Hughes so you won't see it that way.

I'd call that shoddy to be honest.
It would have been shoddy if our results had started sliding and Powell still refused to allow him in the side.
Unless you're privy to the conversations that have taken place between Powell and Hughes, then you've no idea how he has been treated. I expect SCP has got his reasons and has been up front and honest with Hughes, that's his style.
At Hughes age, if he genuinely felt that bad, then he wouldn't have been as visibly delighted as he was when we won promotion up at Carlisle. Plus he would have probably been moved on by now if he felt as though he had been treated shoddily.

I said he'd do a job, not be the solution/permanent replacement.
However I can recall the threads suggesting how poor a player he was while making his starting debut at RB, and what he'd be a liability he was going to be when selected to play in midfield after Stephens got injured. The "expert opinion" I read here was proven to be wrong. I'd like to see him given more than one match at a position before making my mind up.
I asked Powell why Hughes hadn't featured much. His response was along the lines of, every time he got close to the first team squad, he picked up another injury.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that Chris Powell will have been straight in his dealings with all of the players, even if they didn't like what transpired.

IMO Hayes couldnt feel as hard done by when he was dropped. Yes the team were unbeaten, but I dont think I was the only one who felt he wasnt playing particularly well.
Hughes IMO had come in and made a real difference. He was playing well when he was left out.
For what it's worth I dont think either would cut it at this level.
Anyway, Solly will be gone by the time we kick off against Birmingham.
