I've just watched the first three episodes, which made my blood boil. Thank you for posting a link to the petition, which I've signed.

A great drama and, most importantly, it helps keeps this scandal very much in the public eye.
Surprised it hasn't got its own thread.
Couid have massive implications for Ed Davey and the Lib Dems at the next election.
    How so?
He was minister in charge of the post office during the coalition government, and was also a paid advisor for the law firm that represented the PO. He's blaming the post office for misleading the government but either way it's embarrassing for him
Ok. The system was installed way before they even got into power though. The first court case was in 2006.

This is a classic case of over-ambitIous IT ( which the UK knows a lot about, ask an NHS GP, but the UK is hardly alone) plus a second-rate management (typical of the privatised utilities) which also adopted a bullying culture. None of that is anything to do with Ed Davey. Jesus…
Regardless. He was in one of the highest positions of power in this matter and chose to ignore the noise of these poor people and take the word of the lying scumbags that he was supposed to run the rule over.
He's now asking you to vote for him to run the country.
    Capiche?
No that's really trite, and tribal. But let's try and dial down the tribal politics of this, otherwise others will rightly call us out. For me the lessons of this are

    - Big IT projects are the 2nd  most risky national infrastructure projects of the lot, as highlighted in a book I've just finished. Hold back on the hubris, test rigorously and stay humble.
    - the Honours system needs a major overhaul
    - at the same time I'm a bit uneasy if the only response to the programme is to pile-on the now hapless Vennings woman. She should be stripped of her medal. But all those reporting to her who helped build and signed off on this shitshow need to be named and shamed. You wanna earn the same big bucks as in the proper private sector? Then you need to accept the same price of incompetence and failure.
    - Our political system is far from perfect but the geographical constituency system encourages individual MPs with no big career ambitions to do real good. In this case James Arbuthnot. Tracey Crouch is another example. They are both Tories. The BBC Hillsborough doc. highlighted the pivotal role of Andy Burnham.
    - Hats off to ITV. Over at the BBC they should be asking themselves how come they didn't make this.
pretty sure the BBC did a documentary on this the other year

That’s not how TV production works these days I don’t think.

Aren’t most made by independent production companies who then pitch and sell to the broadcasters?

Panorama - Scandal at the Post Office
  • edited January 7
I watched Mr Bates v Post Office and it made me furious that it could happen. I signed the petition calling for Paula Vennells to be stripped of her CBE.

What is just as infuriating is that Government contracts are still being awarded to Fujitsu. Tory donor Simon Blagdon seems to have his fingers in a lot of pies, including Fujitsu. He was also appointed Non Exec Director of UKHSA which looks after the nations health.

The British people need protection from corruption from those at the top.

Panorama - Scandal at the Post Office

Thanks, and here it is. Fair enough, I take back my comment,  and in there the lawyer who worked with Alan Bates says that Panorama uncovered evidence that was crucial in the 2015 case where the judge decided remote access was possible. I suppose it would have been too much to expect the ITV drama to show that :D
    https://youtu.be/d4UYP8JP61A?si=oi8K-cH_gzthjarz

I guess the problem is that nowadays Panorama is restricted to 30 mins. It just doesn’t have the bandwidth it used to have, or that a big high profile dramatisation like this will grab.
  • I love an Agatha Christie adaptation but new ‘Murder is easy’ on the BBC is absolute shite. The lead actor is so bad it’s something else. Avoid at all costs.
  • Just finished Fool me once   8 part drama on Netflix.  Absolutely brilliant.

The fact Michelle Keegan is hotter than the sun is an added bonus

I nodded off before the end, it really was awful.
  • Anyone watching The Tourist season 2?
    I’m two episodes in & it’s a bit bonkers.

Yes, and if anything your summary is a bit understated. I'm enjoying it though.

  • Just started watching the Tourist series 2 on BBC iplayer
    Really enjoyed the first series
& it looks like this is going to be as good 👍

Watched the first episode. Thought the dialogue was pretty wooden to be honest. Hammy at best.

The Coben dramas are very formulaic in terms of  filming style, dialogue and wooden acting (even from some stalwarts!). They are generally quite compelling despite themselves. We just finished Fool Me Once and, unusually for us, didn’t shrug and say “OFFS” at the conclusion as we do with many dramas.

Glad to hear it is not a 'what the fuck' ending

Yeah, finished it last night. It was OK but nothing more than than. Very ITVish even though on Netflix. The acting doesn't get any better and the end is, again, OK without blowing your socks off. Michelle Keegan's pouty exhaling is annoying. Worth watching but won't live long in the memory.

The Tourist is better but not quite as good as the first series - very funny in places. They've left it wide open for a new series.
  • Over the weekend watched the following:

You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment << makes you think about what we are putting in our mouths. Good balanced view.
James may our man in India << if you watched the previous ones you will enjoy this.
  • Really enjoyed the Tourist 2.
  • The Tourist is made by the same people as Boat Story I believe, they both have a bit of humour mixed in with the more gory parts, both are a good watch.

Have seen 3 episodes of The Tourist 2 and think it just as good as the first series.

I go from really enjoying it, to then looking at the car registration plates thinking, ‘where in the bejebus is this supposed to be?’ (I hate it when little things aren’t spot on lol).
But I have to say I’m enjoying the weird Detective aspect more than the main plot tbh 🤣🤣🤣
  • Not sure if there's been much discussion of the latest season of Fargo. I think its been excellent with fantastic perfomances by Juno Temple and Jon Hamm.

Also just started the second season of Julia (Sarah Lancashire in a very different role to Happy Valley - an American TV chef in the early 60s). The first seemed to undeservedly go under the radar, hope this one gets more traction.

Thanks for the tips. Will look out for both of these.  As a fully paid up member of the silly accents club, can I just doff my cap to Minnesota which cleans up spectacularly in that category.
  • Oh, yaah - the Minnesota accept is surely the silliest there is.

I'm intrigued as to why you single out GPs to emphasise over ambitious IT. Is it something anecdotal that you have picked up, or do you have indepth knowledge of NHS IT?
