There are no virus issues on iPad because of the control Apple exercises over the iOS, the only code that can run must be created with XCode and downloaded from the App Store, where it must go through an approval process.  Because of that, there will NEVER be a virus, unless something changes, and a Trojan is unlikely.
A quote from the article below: "People used to say that Apple computers, unlike Windows PCs, can't ever be infected - but it's a myth," said Timur Tsoriev, an analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

    Aggressive?

Apologies if it came across that way. Was just pointing out that the "those that don't get it haven't got one" theory is wide of the mark. But whatever, if someone loves it then I'm not worried - just don't understand the snobbery against those who don't love it. But I'm sure we'll all live!

I got my iPad 2 exactly a year ago as a big surprise birthday present from my wife, I like its speed, portability and especially the fact that I can sit in the lounge wih my wife, not in the study at the desktop, whilst watching Swansea vs Newcastle and this be seen as 'sociable!' excellent for general browsing, photo and music storage and I have still to investigate iCloud. Also not as noisy or hot as a laptop can be.

Perhaps I am being a tad touchy so no apology needed.

Just 'cause your missus doesn't use it doesn't mean, for a second, that it pisses on anything!

Did it occur to you that maybe she didn't want one? Most women I know would never be without a microwave, but if you'd bought me one for Christmas it'd still be on the box it came in!
    Sorry?

My missus quite likes it and is very pleased I bought it for her, thanks for asking.

My point is that we've got one, I've used it and it is quite a nice little gadget, but I still prefer my laptop - which kinda blows a hole in the "those that don't get it haven't got one" theory. That's all. I'm allowed to have an opinion on this.

I bought myself one in December and recently I haven't used it that much. I have to multitask for work so use a macbook pro and if i need to check mail in the morning in bed, I use my iphone. It's sitting in the corner getting dusty and wish I had more of a use for it

We all still have laptops. No one said they replace laptops. What most people, specifically me, said was that until we had one we didn't appreciate how much we would like it. Factually, you can't understand how a device will change your approach until you have one. I suspect the same was said about many items that are now common place in our lives.

People that don't have an iPad generally don't 'get it' in the same way that our grandparents never understood why we would want to text people from our phones; in the same way that my parents 'don't get' Facebook or Twitter.

I suspect if you go back far enough you'll find a generation that said that televisions were rubbish and they would never get one.

My point to you was that you were looking to demonstrate that as you'd bought your wife one and it failed to change your lives for ever it does not piss on the suggestion that some of us think they are very useful.

I'm no great marketing slave to Apple, I have been a fan of all IT and gadgets since I studied computers at school and went on to get a degree in IT. I like many gadgets, the iPad included. I don't have a Mac, I have a PC. I wouldn't change that even though many who have Macs say they are better than windows based computers.

What I don't get is why so many people that have never owned one of these gadgets seem to be so determined to rubbish them. You have one and you don't, particularly, appreciate it. Good for you, but it was unnecessarily aggressive, and if you don't mind me saying so (I suspect you will, actually) rude of you to suggest that your wife's perceived lack of gratitude means that it 'Kinda pisses' on the suggestion that not having one makes it difficult to understand it.

It pisses on nothing, and I would insist that just because you have one and think it is expensive for what you use it for, it doesn't change the fact that those that don't have one are not in a position to make that judgement. If you don't have one (or, more accurately, if you've never had the use of one) you can't 'get it', that is an indisputable fact.

The very fact that so many people on CL are interested in the opinions of current owners proves that there is interest in them. I completely understand why those of us that have one would give our views, and your view is every bit as important as mine, as you have one. However, there is just no need, and I would suggest no point, in those that have never had one slagging them off when the thread was to ask those that, actually, know if they would recommend one.

Often your comments seem to be aimed at insulting people for reasons I just don't understand. Your follow up comment (just a couple above this one) serves absolutely no purpose at all, save for tempting people to keep their opinions to themselves so as to prevent a sarcastic comment from you. For this reason I will not bother to comment on this thread again, as I don't see the point in sniping like you do (and probably will after this post) when you disagree with someone.

Life is not all about point scoring. Sometimes people just want the benefit of others experiences so as to help them make informed decisions. They don't want, or need, to know who is the better at prolonging a pointless argument.

Not everyone will love it.... Of course .... I love it I know that ... And I'm slowly moving away from typing with the Siri thing... It's all bait star trek and I've just found this snooker game that is blinding...

For standard stuff like Facebook, browsing, emails it's perfect and that pretty much all I use computers for.... I can send my invoices from my laptop and sales spreadsheets from laptop ... So all the rest can be done in this ... 650 bucks ... Well happy...

But it doesn't mean everyone has to love them ... Didn't mean to. Reopen the debate just wanted to say that I love the thing...

To all of you saying 'those who don't 'get it' haven't got one...', read on.

I have an ipad 2 which I never use. Of course when I initially got it I trialled it extensively by installing apps, games, loading photos, etc.

When I get home from work or wherever, if I want to do anything computer-related I just jump on my desktop PC which is always on.

When I am out and about the ipad is of no value because it's simply not practical to carry around - virtually anything I want to do on there I can do on my smartphone; which happens to conveniently fit in my pocket.

Although the device itself functions very well with smooth operation (barring the occasional system hang), I actually have no real personal use for it. The only genuine function I believe it has which is superior to other devices is the ability to quickly present picture-heavy information to someone in a high quality format. Or you are someone who is absolutely always traveling due to work commitments.

All this of course is strictly centered on the device itself without delving into the quagmire of Apple-related issues such as lack of flash, iTunes restrictiveness, lack of multitasking, lack of usb support, non-removable battery, etc etc.

and if you read the whole article you will see that even then the Mac OS protects against the trojan.

Well, I just re-read the article and it says it's protected after a patch is installed and if you don't have that patch you are exposed. What's the difference between that and Windows?

    less vulnerable then

Although Apple's system software limits the actions its computers can take without requesting their users' permission, some security analysts suggest this latest incident highlights the fact that the machines are not invulnerable

    Why "less vulnerable"?

You seemed to be suggesting earlier that "out of the box" the Mac OS protected against this trojan, but it didn't - it needed a patch, same as Windows.

Okay, this is a genuine question. I'm intrigued that some people seem to have ipads supplied by their firms. Are there not considered to be any ergonomic/health and safety issues with this kit? I've got a laptop but usually use my desktop because I end up sitting in a much better position for my back and arms and can get the screen at precisely the correct angle/distance for my eyesight.
So are there no "work-related upper limb disorders" and eyesight issues associated with ipad use?

Just bought myself one of these, for no other reason than I think they are cool (purely vanity reasons, I am ashamed to say)

Now what I need help with is what to make it do, I want to put some films on it and my skyplayer for the sports etc

What apps other than angry birds do I need?

What rating out of 10 do they get?

I have bought a used one too, 1st generation so if in a few weeks I do not like it it can go to someone else for what I paid for it I hope

Will it kill the itunes on my laptop if I plug it into that?

    Help!

My other half recently returned from Asian multi stop business trip, best present ever when she came home, lovely 16gb ipad 3 from Tokyo, although she said she was gutted she never got it in Hong Kong or Beijing as it was even cheaper, but still saved well over £150 - £200 on UK prices she reckons.

I'd be very wary of buying one in Beijing (or anywhere in China, they love a fake)

I'm planning a trip to Hong Kong in a few weeks to get a new laptop and iPad 2.

    Can't wait!!!

She loved the shopping in Beijing, even better in Bangkok apparently, Chatuchak market particularly.

no it won't kill your itunes but will synch your itunes to your ipad so depending on how much music you have on your lap top and what GB your ipad has it may not be able to synch it all so you will have to go to itunes and tell it what music you want synched, if any.

Good for films esp when on a long train/plane trip. I'd add BBC iplayer, ITV player etc as you can catch-up on TV programmes then. If you have Sky then add Sky Go too.

Loads of good free apps to add.

I've only been shopping in Shanghai and it really is great fun, just a shame that 90% of the stuff is fake.

China really is a hagglers heaven.
