One of those days - great shot out of the blue for their early opener and then it was just a case of slowing the game down and frustrating us for them. We created some good chances but you could tell it wasn't going to be our day as a combination of bad finishing and bad luck meant it looked like that ball wasn't going to go in. Another goal out of the blue when they really werene't threatening killed us.
Green was not having a good game but I would have taken off a defender for Haynes (probably Taylor) as we had to counter the number of defenders they had behind the ball and we needed width. Still, we have a chance to put things right on Saturday and I'm sure we will.
first half i thought we played some really decent stuff when the ball was ON THE FLOOR!
that long diagonal we play 300 times per home game to kermogant doesnt do us any favours. he wins more than his fair share of headers but we never get much from it. when solly had the ball coming forwards a few times, there was decent movement from the front two, they linked up well and we created. It suits BWP so much and Kerm has a great first touch. We need to use this more often.
Green does nothing for me. Sorry, i know this team is the bollocks and i shouldnt be moaning but he is the one thing that disappointed me this season.
Hamer, your right footed...the ball wasnt coming to you that quickly...why did you take a touch onto your weak foot???
fair play to them. they played awful football but they defended well, scored a screamer and looked comfortable second half.
we will still win league comfortably but i dont really enjoy watching us at home that much and that seems strange for a team that only lost their first home game of the season.
I didn't think we did a lot wrong on the night. We played our usual way to a decent standard, but Colchester scored two goals out of nothing and defended well.
We didn't resort to hoofball until the last few minutes and no one had a particularly bad game, in my view. Particularly first half, I felt that if we had scored once, we would have won quite comfortably, but, of course, as the game wears on it gets harder and harder.
Defeats tend to show up weaknesses and, if there is one weakness in this excellent team, it is that we don't tend to overrun sides and have them defending desperately when we are on top. However, let's not throw out the baby with the bath water, the current system has served us well all season.
think JJ will be ok, can see Haynes replacing the rested BWP. Don't do predictions except to say we won't lose.
0-1 you're all too confident.
Complacency kills.
3-0 were all very confident (based on 34 games form)
Despondency demoralises.
I have spoken to one of my mates and he said we did everything right but Colchester battled well.
You called it right Dazzler and I got it wrong so well done and credit where its due, still think we played ok and looked very good at times but a frustrating night overall, onwards and upwards and back to playing Saturdays thankfully
Lowest crowd of the season when we lead the division by 13 points!
sheer number of games maybe over the past 5/6 weeks?, we seem to have played nearly every midweek?, I guess something had to give and if people can only afford 1 a week then I'd imagine they would rather go on Saturday.
Anyway, write the game off, they are a horrible team who we hopefully won't have to play for a while, back to business on saturday.....some of the moaners around me, jesus you'd have thought we'd just slipped out of play off contention with that result
Fantastic news everybody. I have just woken up after a long, long sleep ( like that Prince ) to find that we are 13 points ahead at the top of the table, and not only that we have only lost 3 games all season. After 50 plus years of being an Addick I can't ever remember anything like it, I can't wait to get there on Saturday !
For all those feeling despondant today read the below:
78 points from 35 games 3 defeats, 23 wins 1 defeat, 10 wins from 17 home games 2 defeats, 13 wins from 18 away games 64 goals scored - joint 2nd highest 25 goals conceded - the lowest by 6 +39 GD - easily the highest (by +9) 13 points clear of 2nd 14 points clear of 3rd (both with far superior GD) Still on course for 103 points Still on course for promotion and the L1 trophy
Notts County - 10 away defeats from 18 with only 5 wins
I'm not in any way pleased, I wanted us to win obviously but felt we were getting complacent.
However the last two losses pushed us on so I don't see this as too much of a problem. First loss of 2012, can you imagine it the P by our name with only 3-4 losses?
Enjoyed the game to a certain extent. For the first 20 mins of each half we played some good stuff without much luck, then colchester changed it around a bit and we were far less effective. A great first goal and a cock up by us handed them the win.
I think essentially it was a case of us being out-thought by the Colchester manager making changes to nullify our play.
It was going to happen some time ... unlikely we would have gone all season unbeaten at home ... not despondent, we have a large points cushion which will allow for these 'blips'.
Strange how Chris invariably waits unil the 75th minute before making substitutes at home. May not be every game, but happens on a frequent basis. Should have been sooner last night, but he knows far better than me.
a great worldy from wordsworth for their first but a complete cock up by hamer fannying for their second
i'm not as excited about hamers distribution as most on here , he can't throw it overarm properly and that is a decent part of the keepers armour that he is missing
there was one unbelievable drilled kick from hand in the first hand which was weighted perfectly to elude the defender right into the path of either Wiggins or Jacko (can't remember which one)-was absolute class from Hamer

Came up against a team who had clearly done their homework, Bradley had to drop deeper than suits him thanks to Magnus Onprounceable doing the best job on Kermorgant of any CB all season. Throwing themselves in the way, not fretting about our passes in the centre of the pitch but cutting out those in the final third.
Hamer bit of a clanger for the second but I said to my dad afterwards that maybe the defence played a part - Colchester knew we kept passing it back to him, if they kept running onto those back passes eventually they'd get a lucky break, and voila, they did. The first goal was swerving like a drunk driver, doubt many keepers would have kept that one out either.
Draw a line under a disappointing night. Onwards and upwards.
Agree with people saying Powell leaving his subs till late, but the first team has been so good he rightly gives them every chance to put it right. Plus I don't think there is much on the bench to really impact a game, Haynes and Clarke have had limited chances but they don't strike me as game changers if we're after a goal, definitely an area which we can improve on in the summer I think.
Agree with Henry other than when Green is good he is poor and when he is bad he is ....
Some people on here wet themselves over him and he has been rubbish since day one
Pace of an 8 year old, poor touch, awarness, selfish, hits 1 good cross in 100 But we will still win the league so will worry about that in the summer
Ridiculous post.
Agreed he wasn't great tonight, but the guy has talent. It amazes me that everytime he has an average game people on here are clamouring for him to be replaced, first it was Wagstaff and look how well his last outing went, and now Haynes who has already stated he doesn't want to play on the wing.
He is a player that will always split the fans like Marmite, but posting drivel as above is crazy!
The first home game I have been able to attend for a few months and I was very excited about it. So was Mrs Grumpy and youngest son of Grumpy.
We thought a strangely flat atmosphere at the Valley for what turned out to be a bizarre match. Felt like a pre-season friendly in the cold.
They had one decent shot on goal and scored twice but to be fair to Colchester they did not do a cynical Oldham job and did try to play some footy.
We played some lovely fancy stuff at times (Solly superb again) but it has to be said looked over -confident, complacent and tired. Not a good combination at this time of the season.
Why do people leave 10 mins early when it is 0-2 at home?
Thought we played ok but never had that cutting edge up front. I don't like that four in midfield and would like to see hughes back in the centre. Think itd time we rotated a few more players
To be fair Carl when was the last time we had a "cutting edge up front".

Agree about Clarke but would certainly like to see Haynes given a proper chance (ie at least 45 mins) on Saturday to show what he could do.
someone else mentioned it earlier and it was getting right on my tits the amount of times our players slipped over , put some proper boots on not those girly slippers ffs

My sentiments entirely Granpa. All of the 50 years plus supporters of Charlton know how good this position feels. Well said!

Just the support Chris and the team need
I still cant remember their keeper making a save. Nor ours.
Crap game in a crap atmosphere. That crowd for a team 13 points clear is cack.

All not so bad....

a lot on here seem to have picked up the same point as me which is that Hollands and Stephens are too similar
both lacking a bit of bite and drive which our great midfielders of the past had-Kinsella and Scotty P
