  • Not sure what I was more disgusted by...BWP's first touch, or people in the west stand applauding the first goal...
  • Another here who thought we played ok, certainly seen us play worse and win this season.

It happens. They only really had one shot, and absolute pearler, and scored two goals.

Getting the goal so early meant Colchester could completely changetheir approach and basically just make life difficult for us. The three-man match up against Stephens and Hollands was two games in a row now, and starting to take a toll on them i feel. Solly was out best outlet first half, sensational with the ball going forward in that first half spell, but for the last 10 of the first half they pushed Wordsworth up tight almost man marking him, and we lost that outlet and definately our impetus.

Won;t slate Green to the extent others seem to, but when you are playing against effectively two defensive walls, your wide play needs to be spot on and we need to get behind them. Neither Green or Jackson can do that, and with Jacko clearly not 100% fit, i think Wiggins has been told to sit more and not get on the overlap so much because Jacko can't cover.

I'm a massive fan of Morrison and Taylor, but i think that huge lump won the battle against them tonight, and the other one playing in the hole (Gillespie?) seemed to pick up the breakdown a bit too easily.

Up front, wasn't happening for BWP tonight and i would have introduced Haynes earlier than SCP did. Kermorgant i'm not sure has ever played so many games in such a short space of time, and although he continues to give 100%, it looked a bit predictable with him tonight.

Just missing that bit of spark. Doesn't help i suppose when the ground is probably around a third full. Top of the league is clearly just a league table a lot of people seem happy looking at, given there was probably more in the ground last season for a nothing Tuesday night game.

As for Hamer, he made a mistake and it was a freak outcome. All keepers have one or two of them in their career. No real drama.
  • PS. it naturally wasn't great to watch, butColchester defensively were excellent i thought, and the number of tactical switches they made throughout the game really stifled us effectively.
  • Agree with Henry other than when Green is good he is poor and when he is bad he is ....

Some people on here wet themselves over him and he has been rubbish since day one

Pace of an 8 year old, poor touch, awarness, selfish, hits 1 good cross in 100
But we will still win the league so will worry about that in the summer
1 good cross in a 100? Drop me out
danny greens problem is danny green thinks he's better than he is. tries to 'whip' it too much and wants to look technically amazing. david beckham wannabe syndrome.

hes obviously got talent and can strike a ball but he really hasnt done it for us so far.
  • Rubbish. Powell out and get Megson in while we still have time.

    :-)
  • Thought we played ok but never had that cutting edge up front. I don't like that four in midfield and would like to see hughes back in the centre. Think itd time we rotated a few more players
  • I'm to blame, had two pints before the game, first time for over a year. Sorry.
No, my fault. Decided not to have the usual banana sarnie for lunch ...bad choice.

Mr F summed it up for me by saying we used up all our luck at Bournemouth . Certainly has a point - nothing much went our way tonight. Agree that we SO need to keep the ball on the ground more . Yann wins it well in the air but his flicks/knockdowns are not being anticipated at the minute.

Don't believe anyone has mentioned BWP tonight so am I allowed to say that his poor control in front of goal/lack of shooting boots probably cost us 3 points tonight ? Harsh maybe , but don't think too many would disagree if they are honest.

Nevertheless, onwards & upwards after tonight's blip.

To be fair Carl when was the last time we had a "cutting edge up front".
  • We were woeful. If you dont force a save from the keeper in 90mins you get whay you deserve. Nowt.

For me, tonight should have seen the startimg XI rotated. We looked leggy at Bournemouth and werent at it tonight.

    Ho hum.
You mean apart from his save from Hollands first half? We had 16 shots, 10 on target. We should have finished our chances, but some of the play leading up to them was sublime - the move for the shot Jacko had that hit the bar (one of the off target ones).

Think back to Walsall at home last year. That's woeful mate.

  • First game in ages where Yann hasn't had it his own way. That centre half was a beast. Is he the one that we were reportedly after?

Does he produce less than Jackson in a game in terms of delivery? and across the season in terms of Assists? You could argue the point ... Maybe he isn't the hyped up player we expected but he doesn't hide in games, he wants the ball and is a threat. He's tackling's poor but we expected based on the disciplinary record at DGR and can be incosistant like many s winger fine, but to say the lad is as quick as an 8 year old and delivers 1-100 crosses is nonsense

    Posting without reading.

A story of the sublime and the ridiculous. Wordsworth's strike and Hamer's bloomer, something he is unlikely to do again if he plays to the age of 90. Those two incidents were effectively all Colchester offered. We played all the football when we didn't get suckered in to head tennis by a physical side, but couldn't find a way to score. If we'd got one we would have got more.

A bad day at the office which my I probably knew would be the case after making a 70 mile round trip to pick up my season ticket!

Biggest disappointment for me was the attitude of some of our fans after the season we've had although credit for the "Colchester who gives a **** we're Charlton Athletic and we're going up" together with "Charlton we love you."

Hopefully we'll put things right on Saturday with 3 points.
  • What Afka and HandG said, we were far better then Saturday, just didn't get any breaks, it happens, move on, couple of fresh legs in on Saturday, and get a reaction.

As for Hamer, he's saved more then he's cost, he'll learn
  • Lowest crowd of the season when we lead the division by 13 points!
  • InCurbs Jr maintains his 100% record.. that's 7 home games since '08, and 7 home defeats!
We didn't play badly, but Colchester packed their defence very tightly whenever we were in their half, which was most of the time.. They got 1 lucky & 1 total calamity of a goal, and kept us locked out..
Their 2 lads with Nigerian names (which I won't try & spell) were particularly impressive. Their #4 was beating Kermorgant in the air, which takes some doing...
    Oh well....

Good point but how many games was it before that we went without a forward scoring a goal, one game is not "cutting edge"
  • Don't get why we persisted to use ye 'lump it to kermorgant' tactic when he was up against two giants, we were fighting a losing battle, Stephens and green looked disinterested but all in all I thought Colchester were lucky they got them three points, but it's clear that we don't have a plan B when teams come and park the bus and this far into the season we should, oh well onwards and upwards

Probably for another thread but the attendance was a disgrace.

What more does this team have to do? Hope those of you that stayed at home enjoyed Eastenders and your spam and chips-you bunch of fairweathers.

  • We got lucky on Saturday, Ying and Yang and all that...

But, and I've been saying this for weeks, we don't have enough energy in midfield, so that there are large gaps either between the forwards and everyone else, or between the defence and everyone else, leading to too many long balls. It was when the likes of Solly injected a bit of pace that we looked dangerous. Indeed, I thought Taylor looked a bit leggy as well.

Tonight was 1 game too many for the 1st 11, an ideal opportinity to give Russell a game and possibly Cort, as before the game I was if anything more concerned about Notts County on Saturday as they are going very well...
  • just look tired and needed freshening up in the starting 11. the schedule looks to have taken a toll
  • Well ladies and gents, we were due a bit of bad luck and we've had it tonight. Colchester created nothing at all and came away with a 2-0. We played some of the best football I've seen us play this season, particularly in the first half but we were just a bit poor in front of goal and that cost us. Jackson hit the bar, BWP had some chances, Hollands could have scored, the list goes on. Colchester were wise with their defending, giving us less time on the ball to cross than we like and we didnt adapt well. On top of that, when you throw yourself in front of a shot you're relying on luck and they got it in spades, with everything hitting them. It even worked for them in front of our goal tonight. Don't know what went on with the pitch tonight but our lads were slipping everywhere, including Kerms in the box which was hugely unlucky. Very miffed when the ref allowed play to go on when their bloke went down in the box but blew his whistle just as we put the ball in the net. Seemed he wouldn't have blown if it had gone out, but I'm afraid that just doesn't add up for me. Poor refereeing there.

I'm loathed to blame Hamer for their second as that was just a bit of bad luck all told, but I felt he set off late for their first which was definitely saveable. Don't know if it was to do with him struggling to take off on his ankle or it being too early in the game but it was disappointing. Either way though, the fact is the team should have bailed him out with the amount of chances we created.

The ref had a bit of an on/off tonight. Thought he dealt well with their bully tactics at times but allowed them too much slack on the play-acting front. Colchester must be the biggest load of namby-pambies we've come across this season. Throwing themselves down and staying down after innocuous challenges and they jumping right back up. Even Kem Izzet got embarrassed by their 25 and dragged him off the ground when he tried to go all Kenneth Brannagh at the end. Wordsworth and Magnus were excellent, but it's a shame the rest of the side embarrassed themselves with their antics. As for our side, I'm beginning to get a bit weary of Stephens. He's only young which is good but he sits too deep to be an effective creative midfielder and he's not dogged enough to defend effectively. As a result he just goes missing really, with the odd beautiful pass which isn't enough for a whole game.

I'm not normally one to knock our fans but the only real low part of my night was the absolute tool sat behind me tonight. Young bloke spent the entire game moaning without pause. 'Bloody Wright-Phillips, he's just there to pick up his wage and nothing else'. Apparently 18 goals isn't enough. Moaned about how Hamer has 'been doing this all season' after that unfortunate clearance, and exclaimed 'why do we even bother' at half time. Considering we actually did alright it really tired me out having to listen to that. Oh well, hopefully we'll kick on for County
  • They did a good job on us and credit to Ward their manager. Kermo didn't win much in the air against their centre backs and their full back knew what wiggins was going to do everytime. Wordsworth is one player I have rated since they turned us over the first time we played them in this league a couple of years ago. I pissed off with myself for thinking after Saturday we were up. I should have remembered this is Charlton. Hollands looks knackered.
  • still can't believe we lost 2-0. At least we played better than Saturday.
Can't see our midfield and attack being fit for purpose in the Championship.
  • Bad day at the office. It happens. Could still be playing and wouldn't have scored yet. Always difficult chasing a game after conceding an early goal against a team who defended in numbers.

3rd loss of the season and its March. We looked leggy tonight and still played OK. Maybe we need to use the depth of our squad in some areas as the first team have put in one hell of a shift to get where we are so far. We had plenty of chances to win it and it didn't go for us for the first time in a long time this season. And I am not surprised a few people clapped the first goal. 2 keepers in goal would have struggled to keep that out. And were my eyes deceiving me or did Kem Izzett look just a little bit on the tubby side? Bit rich coming from me but I don't play football for a living! Anyway bring on the Magpies!
  • I didn't think we were that bad, created a lot of chances just couldn't take them. They score from a wonder goal and a fluke. It happens, get over it. A home defeat was always going to happen, need to bounce back on Saturday.
  • These evening games are shit.

Thought first half of the first half we played some of the best stuff we have for some time. Then it went flat for the rest of the half. Then we looked like we were gonna score for the first 20minutes of the second half... then it went flat again... then hamer - just seen this on the box, what was he thinking taking a touch onto his wrong foot dunno why he didnt just put his foot thorugh it!

Solly was superb first half some glorious stuff, that little lob over their wingers head then wrong footed somebody else ran into space and sprayed it through to Jacko in space. Also a couple of nice one twos, one with Kermogant in the box. Wiggins disappointed a bit tonight - too keen to run to the byline sometimes, he's good at it with his pace etc but sometimes the early ball is the option but he never wants to play it...

Shame to see the unbeaten run go would've been good to do a whole season... target now is 100 points
  • keep hearing people say they sat back and what not. They didn't particularly and there wasn't too much timewasting. We just weren't good enough.

Green and BWP were very poor again
