Got to defend hamer a little. He punched two corners, dropped one and got fouled at another. He caught other crosses and did what else he had to. Again his distribution was outstanding. He isn't a 6'4 'keeper and in a crowded goalmouth with players of 6'2 plus doing all they can to put him off he has obviously decided he is best off dealing with it by punching the ball. In every other respect he's a good, solid goalkeeper. Top international 'keepers sometimes struggle with crosses...let's not always focus on what he didn't do well. It's like marking Solly down because he got skinned once.
I thought our whole team worked really hard today, Wright Phillips, Big Yann, Pritchard, the back 4 obviously. I wasn't that pleased with Green today, and Hollands sometimes seems to be everywhere and nowhere and falling over, but overall hard to be critical.
I actually praised the ref for letting the game flow and picking up on some fouls in our favour but then he booked Wiggins for little or no reason and after that he lost the plot and I take it all back.
I do however think that Russell's tackle was bad and warranted the red card. I'm just glad it was near the end when the ref got really silly and not 20 minutes earlier as I thought they were pushing for a goal and I kept on thinking there would be a sloppy disappointing goal let in. I didn't think United had our class and skill. when we played the ball on the floor we were immense.
Hamer worried me today, but with a clean sheet, can't complain too much. Can't believe there were 6000 empty seats there today, from the north west it looked pretty full except for scattered free seats in the north lower, south east end and the upper west.
brilliant goal, less said about the 2nd half free kick the better.
Sheff U played some nice passes but when they got 35 yards from goal they ran out of ideas and into our superbly marshalled defence and midfield. Our centre backs are the best pairing I have seen since Rufus and (anyone). They had more possession simply because faced with our wall they played it square and back. Hamer had only one shot to save (the one that hit the bar was a shite cross.) His fumbles are a worry but the defence bailed him out. The ref (named Deadman - how appropriate) was poor, setting his standard with the Wiggins card. As soon as Russell launched himself I thought he would get red and Beattie ensured they had no focal point at the death by getting into the showers before his team mates. A hard won win but one that marks us out as Champions. Our record against the 4 below us is P6 W4 D2 L0. Sheff fans who thought they deserved anything are dreaming. They need to ask themselves how many attempts they had on target. I keep looking at the league table. Hudds are 7 points adrift and if we win our game in hand we will be 10 points (and goal difference) ahead of anyone else. After all the years of heartache this is wonderful.
happy addick today, getting on it large next week. My moan of the day just checked my Exeter tickets, the bloody ticket office have overcharged me. I shall be ringing Moinday morning and giving them a piece of my mind ;-)
Interesting how people who watched from the touchlines thought Russell's tackle was bad, when from the Covered End upper it looked a solid one footer tackle. Saying that, lets Dale Stephens back in which ain't a bad thing.
Loads of players put there bollocks on the line today, and got the result those efforts deserved. Hopefully a few days off before getting ready for Exeter
Shouldn't need to defend any of our players - 19 goals conceeded in 26 - Top of the league - 7 points clear (10 if we win game in hand). What is there to moan or criticise?
Another good performance against the second best side in the division, the back 4 are awesome.
So many good displays out there today, their tall fella in the middle (McDonald??) was a good player and considering Wiggins was playing in the Ryman a year ago, he more than held his own.
Only real weak link in the side is the keeper, but have faith that Powell will address that in the summer.
@rothko I thought it was a red and we were in the north west corner. Dec didn't think it was a red. Looking forward to seeing tonight. I didn't think it was malicious, but certainly understood whilst it was deemed a sending off offence and potentially dangerous.
Yep, he worked hard trying to be in the right place at the right time, he held the ball up well when we had a break. Just because he didn't have too many chances to score, he still made a difference getting on the end of balls and winning it back when it was lost.
MOG - CP's words on beatties sending off ""On James Beattie, my chairman is a lawyer and he says strangulation is a criminal offence, so there you go.
"He grabbed Yann. I don't know whether it was the referee or the fourth official that saw it, but he saw it fit to send James Beattie off and saw it fit to book Yann."
Their 'goal' did go in - no question. The Utd supporter suggest it was not a foul, but the man marking Hammer had fouled him several times by pushing and holding as the cross came in. All clubs seem to do this and it kind of serves you right if goals are chalked off.

Seen it on Goals Express. Never a red in a million years. Along the ground. Led with one foot. Got the Ball. No contact with the Utd player. The only one who desereved to go was Beattie.
Great goal worthy of winning most games. I didn't think United created much despite having so much possession. Even hitting the bar late on was a speculative effort, I don't know if it was a cross or a chip but from where I was sitting Hammer had it covered. I thought Russel was going off even as he made the tackle and I think it was a tackle that didnt need to be made like that, right in the middle of the pitch with no real danger if United retained the ball. I would have taken a point before the game but after we scored we defended well and made them chase the game. We are not going to come up against a better team for the remainder of this term the league is ours.
@Southendaddick Wiggins was playing in the Ryman a year ago? Guessing you mean Pritchard, was two divisions lower than us in the BSP. But yeah I agree, he did maybe struggle at times but did well enough in one of our toughest games all season.
Sheff Utd held the ball well and could spray it around, but their final ball was poor. Alot of over hit crosses to a striker who wasn't winning anything against our two warrior centre backs. The fact they hit the bar from a misplaced cross and a Hamer flap says it all.
Referee was abysmal. Glad the fourth official or lino saw Beattie grab Yann.
The lino told the ref about Beattie , at first view and the reaction of sheff utd players got darrel sent off the first thing i thought when i watched from the stand is that he had lunged in , seeing it on the Tv it is a fair 1 footed tackle, i get the impression the ref thought there was a bit of malice intent in the tackle and therefore sent him off for being overly agressive, dont know if you can do that
Tough, hard thought victory against a very good side. They play their best football second half and after last week it was inevitable we'd sit back and defend the goal lead. Thought Pritchard and Taylor were great today.
Haven't read any of the above comments, but I'm sure the ref is getting abuse from those that don't know the laws of the game. The officials had a great day and from what I could see got everything just about spot on.
i thought for the first time pritchard looked out of his depth, but then he produced a great bit of fooballing skill to get out of a tight whole in the centre of midfield, maybe he just had a below par game,
i thought BWP was poor today, not lacking effort or lazy just out of confidence and seemeds to find himself half a yard out of postition , still think the guy needs a rest tbh
Excellent result, would've happily taken a point before the game. Sounds like there's a real buzz around the Valley and at times like this I'm gutted to be exiled in the north. I was fortunate to be young and free of responsibility during the 90s rebirth so was able to attend regulary. Shame I'm missing the start of the golden Powell era but for those of you worshipping at our temple every other week - hope you're revelling in it! Now onto the next game, may the push continue!
Great result. Sheffield Utd were probably the best team I've seen us play against this season and they will be rightly gutted by by the result. Seemed like we forfeited a lot of possession, soaked up their play, and we looked good on the break. Despite a few hairy moments, I somehow felt pretty confident that we wouldn't concede for most of the match.
Solly was outstanding for me, one of the main reasons we are keeping clean sheets (which are ultimately winning us games).
Russell's red looked legit to me. Didn't see why Beattie got his red card, so can't comment.
Ben Hamer needs to be careful with all the timewasting. He should never have got booked at 65 mins, no need to be dragging things out at that point in the game.
Good support from both sides. Nice of the blades fans to clap the kids as they went past the away end too, they seem like a decent bunch.

job done.

Defence got us the three points today.
As for Jacko.....wow.
