Sheff U had a lot of possession, especially 2nd half, but they didn't create many clear cut chances. I felt we were holding them fairly comfortably and definitely deserved the win. Decent cameo by haynes, great performances across the back four and brilliant goal by the skip. coyr
Well lads where do i start with that. I predicted a game with loads of chances with both keepers on top form, couldn't have been more wrong. In my opinion apart from maybe half an hour tops United bossed that game with a fantastic showing once again by Kevin McDonald what a steal he's been from Burnley. For the second time in a week Johnny Jackson comes up with that bit of quality to settle the game. Other than that i thought we were the better team on the day without really troubling Hamer who i thought was really dodgy by the way. Your defence is really organised and the centre back pairing in Morrison and Taylor is brilliant, compliment eachother well but had to protect Hamer a lot more than they woyuld have liked! Don't understand for the life in me why our "goal" was chalked off, Hamer literally fumbled the ball over his own goal-line as our nearest player, Maguire was being forced away from goal by wone of your players, absolutely bewildering! Shame about Matty Lowton hitting the bar in the last couple as we easily deserved a point out of that but hey-ho we march on. Hopefully follow you lads up in second, best two teams in this league by far! Cheers.
Beattie I believe was sent off for throwing a punch. As soon as it all kicked off, I said to my ol' man that a Utd player had thrown a punch and the ref would said someone off!
Beautiful free kick from JJ and just as good as last weeks except slotting in the other corner. Up until the goal both teams were canceling each other out. United lacked that little bit of quality as they had plenty of posession. Back four were immense and Hamers distribution was excellent almost setting up BWP with a chance but did flap at a few crosses. Thought Russel deserved a red card and I think Beattie had a hold of Hollands throat in the melee which resulted in a nerve fracking last 10 minutes. Another 3 points and moving away from 2nd spot.
wow what a game. Just got in after a mice "happy" walk back to Welling over the hill. Not read over all the posts, but wanted to say that I was very impressed with United both as a team and the support. It was great at half time to see them clapping the young up and coming players we have, also they had some great songs as well. Chatted with two of them walking up to Charlton Park. Truly a great bunch and how I always think of us as supports. United as a team are the best opposition I have seen in a good time. They did not resort to "huff" and played some great football. So onto us today. We do clearly have the best defense in this league Solly is just such a player. We did not play the best football today Untied did. We played the game that gets us 3 points, end of. We have one aim this year and this team have all but achieved it.
Something I realised today. This is a team that is really setup to play at the next level and that is why the football is not a pretty sight at the moment as we have to play a more physical game against most of the teams in this league. That is my view anyway what do you all think?
Anyway 7 clear of second 18 clear of 6th and 7th that is a massive 6 game margin and to be fair we don't look like we are going to lose that number for the total season (well not the way we are getting the points at the moment)
Quality free-kick from the skipper and dare i say, even better than last weeks one. Must admit, I thought the free-kick looked a bit soft but hey-ho.
Russells sending off looked a bit harsh from my seat, I saw Beattie attempting murder on Kermogant(?). I looked at the ref and realised he'd missed the incident but thankfully the linesman didn't.
Hamer looked very nervous in the 2nd half so was very happy to come away with a clean sheet.
Thanks to Henry for arranging the pitch presentation for today and nice to meet some fellow lifers!
Two Sheffield teams, two JJ free kicks, two wins. They were the better side today but that's how you win the league...play poorly and win.Our back four is why we are where we are.God bless Solly,God bless us all.
When russel slid in I didn't think it was a sending off. Just see it on sky and change my mind. Them sort of tackles now days get red cards. Yann was yanking at a players shirt and beat came from behind him and grabbed yann round the throat. Dont think Beattie through a punch but still deserved red
Another solid defensive performance today and had that extra bit of quality at the other end. That's what champions are made of. Seen a replay of the Russell tackle after the game. Absolutley ridiculous decision. Pathetic refereeing. Wilson talked absolute nonsense re Beattie's Red Card in the post match press con. Reckons Yann should've been the one to go. Very strange comments from him. Regarding the 'disallowed' goal the blades fan spoke of further up, the ball hit the post and didn't cross the line anyway so it's a non issue surely? Admittedly didn't have the best view of it so hapy to be corrected.
Don't agree with all the Sheff U deserved a draw, they did nothing but pass the ball in pretty triangles and for the last 25 mins lump it into the box. Hamer made one save that was comfortably going wide and threw one in the net when being fouled, nothing else as the defence were awesome. Simonsen made all the saves (4 or 5) and nearly palmed Green's swerving shot into the net. Charlton totally deserved the win (not playing their best it has to be said) as they had the better quality in the final third (shots on target). Nothing is won with possession and pretty passing if there is no end result. The same with the 2nd Sheffield club last week, although they did not play pretty passing triangles, they just lumped through the middle of the park. Agree the ref was shyte, some baffling decisions, but the Russell red was always going to be given when you dive in like that (I did not even think it was a foul, but I am from the school that thinks footbal is a 'contact' game). The ref also missed a stonewall pen when Jackson's shot was punched away by a Sheff U defender and Kermogant was forearmed to the ground in the box previous to that shot. Have to agree we got luck with the throw leading up to our goal though as it did come off BWP. With the 'officials' on show it did not suprise me that the wrong decision was given.
10 pts clear if we hopefully win our game in hand, from Sheff U and Huddersfield (who are winning 3-2 at the moment).
I know its exciting times but please don't think we are there yet. Using Curbs old method.......lets now get to 70 points as quick as possible.....and then 80.....and so on. COYR.
Wow what a game. Wow what a result. Wow we are ten points clear of the team in third place. Wow, oh no sorry give it a double Wow this has to be the most exciting Charlton team for a long long time.
Sheff Utd are a good side although a bit lacking in the final third. Glad we don't have to play them again though and it is them or Huddersfield for second IMO.
Lucky to win, but the aim of the game is to score more goals than the opposition, and that's all that matters. Highly competitive, full-blooded match.
Very poor ref. One of those who thought that we'd paid to watch him rather than the players. I'm talking about over the course of the whole match, not just the incident.
In summary, Sheff Utd were better team. Good team, great support. Bit disappointed their wasn't more home fans in the ground too!
We were poor in midfield and upfront bar Kermo who worked tirelessly and was great in the air. BWP lazy again.
Our defence top quality, especially Wiggins whose energy and enthusiasm up the left makes up for JJ lack of mobility. Thought Hamer looked very suspect especially to crosses as he has all season.
As said above though, winning despite not being at our best is a sign of a good team. To do that consistently is a mark of Champions which I'm sure we will be come May.
Thought sending off was harsh but given the recent flurry of red cards the ref was justified in doing so. It wasn't two footed but Russels trailing foot swept round and caught their players standing leg. Fair play to the ref though, he missed the scuffle and made full use of the linesmen to take the relevant action.
I thought we "won ugly" today with the game lit up by a fantastic goal. Back four were solid but Hamer was flapping and did not dominate his area as I would expect a keeper in a table-topping team to do. Midfield tried hard and were probably cancelled out by the opposition. Yann won almost every high ball but was very isolated at times and his flick-ons rarely found BWP. Great result but I would like to see the ball kept shorter and on the deck for more of the game. Referee seemed to want to be the centre of attention IMO.
Thought we defended magnificently (again), although Hamer does not fill me with confidence when coming for the ball. They did have the majority of play but to restrict them to just 1 shot on target shows how hard this team works. Fantastic.
About Russell's red card, I was certain it was a clean tackle from where I was, it looked like a scissor type but it was the only way that tackle could be made with the way the 2 players were. Ridiculous decision, as was Wiggy's yellow. Ref spoiled it a bit.
Cracking free kick, thought it was a soft free for the ref to give. Hamer was flapping more than an outhouse door in a storm. Very lucky with the ref chalking off a goal for them. Think the ref has been watching too much football on tv in the last week or so, as I thought Russell went with one foot, hard and low and won the ball. Didn't fancy the last couple of minutes with 10 v 11, then the ref pulled out his trump card.
BWP was not 'lazy'. I just don't understand these comments at all.
Another great result against a team with a ridiculously good recent record. They were always going to be good, but we had the better chances and I feel Green should've done better with at least one of his chances.
I can go back to the 1957 -1958 season but i cannot remember Charlton not losing to both Sheffield sides in the same season home and away. Methinks this might be another record and another notch on our club gun
Yes, we have the happy knack of winnings games when not at our best. United could easily have gone home with a point and, should they have done so, few could have begrudged them. Hamer did not inspire confidence, fortunately the rest of the defence were excellent. Green had a couple of decent efforts early in the 2nd half, then we maybe overdid the sit back and play on the break tactics. Fantastic free-kick by Jacko. Stuck it in the other corner this week; two keepers might have struggled to keep it out. Pritchard did ok but maybe ran out of gas. Hollands very solid and got through a lot of work. Plenty of effort from Yann & BWP, though precious little in the way of chances. I'd like to see the Russell challenge again and I didn't see the Beattie incident, so difficult to comment. I've seen Mr Deadman officiate before at The Valley and he's been excellent, but eight yellows was way over the top. Hard to fault a team that keep winning and are 7 clear at the top, but we can play a lot better than that.

we have now played 3 of the top 9 twice.
and we are winning games without our leading scorer scoring.
on to the next game.

Two super results in a week, a real statement.
Never a red card in a million years. Beattie had Yann round the throat and deserved to go.
