  • Benson's gone, Bexley Dan .... played for Swindon today
  • oh yeah, thanks  - forgot - been a very blurry few weeks

    Know the feeling haha
  • Great result!! HUGE win today! The think that astonishes me is that Dale Stephens who, at the start of the season was being compared to Scott Parker, might not be able to get in the team once fit ;)
  •  Pritchard did well i think we need a more dominant character in there as well.

I thought Douglas (long haired mush playing defensive midfield) for the Bees was pretty good - would mind seeing him as cover for midfield, thought he looked better than Dawson - anyone else?
  • Can't believe some of the criticism for Clarke... Good win in the end, settled a few nerves from the NYE loss.
  • Thought we ground out that result today.
First half we weren't at all fluent and if anything they shaded it.
Thought Pritchard looked a little out of his depth early on and his slight physique struggled in the midfield battles.
Perhaps he was trying too hard on his debut?
Second half we stepped up a gear and in the end were worthy of our 2-0 scoreline.
Kermy was great - I do wish BWP and co would get in position to anticipate his flick-ons sometimes

Was it just me or does Clarke seem short on pace?
  • @macronate

"Could see part of their plan was to bomb long balls towards Solly but it didn't work."

I  had just been thinking that teams have given up on that, as they've discovered that Solly is too good. Rosler is behind the curve. Wonder if he will again come out with 'the better team lost' ? Lost a lot of respect for him after today.

I agree with you on Pritchard, and Clarke, but I believe Clarke is a 'big lump around the box' type striker anyway.

Yeh, I wouldn't want to condemn him on the evidence of that short cameo - but that situation that broke on the right flank he looked like he had lead in his boots.
Guess he might get a longer run out on Saturday?
  • We were excellent in defending as a team and I dont recall a time when Hamer was tested..only flapping at some crosses. Brentford had the most possession but we were more likely to score. 3 points and one aim! COYR.

Thought Yann was immense today - he run his socks off & won almost all his headers.

Like many on here I was not impressed with Leon Clarkes 15 mins - but will give him a few games to find his feet and interested to see if he plays 90 mins next Sat and if so, who with ???

Not surprissed Hayes is a bitt miffed and SCP needs to be a bit wary - a couple of times he has brought new/loan players straight in & upset a few of the regulars ( Benson & Hughes to name two)..........just hope he knows what he is doing.

want to go to Sheff Wed  but need a few more bodies to share the petrol costs...........

  • Not a great performance but Brentford usually give us a tough game and we had played almost a full game with 10 men 2 days ago.

Shocked at the 7.5 and 8's Green is getting in the ratings thread. Thought he was poor today apart from a few set pieces that created some chances and his goal. Gave the ball away too often with poor decisions.

Nice to see Pritchard get a chance. Still not convinced we have the right partner for Hollands at the club, as Bexley Dan suggested we might well bring in a CM if we can find the right player. Also agree that Ephraim and Russell don't look like they are the answer.

BWP not looking confident but I'm sure he'll be back on form soon.

Wiggins pacey going forward and Solly pretty solid defensively as usual.

As has been said Kermorgant's showing he's a very important player. Not everything comes off for him, but he always battles away and causes problems. It's great having that physical presence up front, yet he's got more to his game than just being a big lump.

Far too early to judge Clarke even though he didn't impress. He's scored goals this season and even if he's only ever a sub he should be more dangerous off the bench than the likes of Euell and Benson are/were.

As we've seen in the few games he's played this season Cort can do a job. Not conformable with the ball but the other 3 generally are so not too much of a problem.
  • I still dispute that Hughes kicked up a fuss about being dropped and will do until I see some evidence. He's a 34 year old utility man being used as such, and I reckon that rumour was fished out of the same bag as the Wiggins to Spurs to cover for Assou-Ekotto when he goes to play in the ACN that he hasn't qualified for.

Can anyone show me otherwise? I think Hughes is far too professional for that
  • What was the health and safety reason for emptying the north upper?
    probably sprout farts!

you finally got my prezzie then? american postal service is shyte.
  • Clarke is cup tied for anyone thinking he may get an extended runout next week so Hayes will be involved again.
  • And Hughes was not best pleased (not his words but paraphrasing what he told me for the benfit of delicate ears) about losing his place. I would imagine if he gets in that XI again you are going to have to drag him out by his ankles he is that sort of bloke.

A big win today and the right response to defeat at Orient.

Brentford were no mugs and I can see why they are pushing for 6th place. I was wondering why SCP had replaced Taylor with Cort when he (Cort) made a crucial block in the first half which looked goalward bound. Pritchard also impressed me for most of the match but faded slightly towards the end. Understandable given his inexperience at this level.

Morrison's goal came at the right time and I was relieved it was given as the ref seemed to be trying to show he was not a "homer." When we didn't score during our purple patch at the start of the second half I feared a draw or worse but the players showed great character to grind it out before Danny Green's goal made it safe.

The negative (other than the stand fiasco) appears to be  Leon Clarke although harsh to form a definitive opinion on this one cameo. However the initial impression is either that he makes Marcus Bent look a hive of industry or has graduated with first class honours from the Grant Basey School of Sprinting.
  • I amfairly sure Chris Powell said in an interview that Hughes was not happy about losing his place.  being unhappy about losing your place does not mean that you have thrown your toys out of the pram though.

  • Gritty, hard working performance, with a little decent football and great result when not playing great against a difficult team. Rode our luck at times with them unable to take their chances but that's been there achilles all season and we looked the more threatening in attack and the better footballing team overall, especially 2nd half on the break.

Solly the pick for me but overall again most were good without being great.

Thought Cort was absolute pants and hoping there is a good reason for Taylor being rested? For such a tall bloke I think the first header he won was in the 2nd half by giving a foul away on the edge of the box and he didn't win many after that. But to be fair he also blocked a couple of shots with his head and worked hard putting it about and blocking things.

Green didn't impress me again, giving the ball away too often and not working as hard closing down as the others. But I admit I think Waggy gives more overall and makes us a better team but admit Green is the best crosser of the ball at the club. Just feel he's a bit of a luxury player we're not playing well enough to accommodate at the moment, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

Yann just astounds me with how much ball he wins and his work rate, simply amazing. But I've said it before and I'll say it again....I don't think it's a coincidence that Brad's goals have dried up since Yann has come into the team. Brad did nothing wrong today and worked his socks off and I have nothing against him at all, and certainly don't think he has an attitude problem. I just don't see that they work well together as a front two. BWP isn't a 'get on the end of flick ons' type striker and we've changed our style of play since Yann joined. Brad is getting frustrated and it's effecting the rest of his game.

Yes Clarke was err.....unconvincing! But early cameo role so no judgements from me yet.

Overall, again not comfortable but were good enough to restrict them to a few half chances and Hamer didn't have to make any great saves which says a lot. If this last couple of months has been our blip then I couldn't ask for a better blip. Not playing as well as we were but still far more positives than negatives. Good result and onwards and upwards.

For those moaning that blocking the keepers view for a free kick is an offence, no it clearly isn't. Otherwise you'd also have to say that interfering with the wall itself by standing in or infront of it whilst it's being arranged is also an offence! It's just a sign of a team that know they're not as good as the opposition and have to try something different to bridge the gap.

Very pleased with today, Bradley Pritchard in particular stood out along with the back four who seemed seldom troubled, almost taking Solly outwitting attackers and passing the ball out of danger for granted after what seems like years of hoofing the ball away in panic. Yamm is fast emerging as a total legend, he won everything today and will become a real Valley favourite the way he is going.

Negatives? The atmosphere was strange but picked up when people were moved strangely, not finest
debut I have seen for our latest Leon but not going to judge him just yet on that. bradley is trying I am sure of that but a couple of times he was not in the position I expected him to be, sniffing a goal from a keepers spill or picking off a misplaced backpass. it was clear the rest of the team are desparate for him to score and were trying to play him in whenever possible but is he just playing a few yards deeper than when he was scoring, not a critisism just am observation.

All in all a very good day, we can enjoy next saturday with no real pressure and then the fun really begins

Extract from Chesterfield FC website 'Chesterfield manager John Sheridan was able to field on-loan players Ole Soderberg, Leon Clarke, Neal Trotman and Jonathan Grounds in the FA Cup, first round match against Torquay United at the B2Net Stadium this afternoon.' 12/11/11
  • Clarke not good but so what... give him a run in

Great result without being as convincing as a few months back but so what - 3 points

Let's see what Jan/Feb brings in terms of points and squad additions

    Happy New Year All !

You would want a player to be unhappy at losing their place - but there is a difference from being uhappy and throwing a wobbly as has been pointed out. I think the best analysis of the game must go down to chances- we created them and Brentford didn't. If you create enough you will score, especially a team like us who have goals in it. We created more than our fair share of good chances apart from the goals. Brentford were always going to have a chance and we could have been made to pay for missing the excellent chances before but their striker had no time being under good pressure from Clarke. That was about it from them and we would have been extremely unlucky if that cost us 2 points.
  • Big win against a decent Brentford side that created very little, despite looking dangerous on the ball. Morro's goal came against the run of play in the first half but it had a good effect on us and we grew in stature.  At he start of the second half we looked a totally different side, we played some great stuff and could have scored two or three more, it was not until the last 15 minutes that Brentford even had a real sniff and that was from freekicks.  Rosler needs his eyes tested though unless he is one of those managers that always bigs his team up to boost morale
  • A bit early to judge Leon Clarke methinks.
  • Bit surreal, Covered end doing the Conga down the steps, West stand drummers drumming, West stand singers leading the covered end choir. No good can come of it I tell ye. Reassuringly, not everything had changed, the football was less than convincing and Charlton supporters were on form moaning on about a new player who had only been on the pitch for ten minutes. But the players want to win and they give their heart and soul. I'm loving it and Yann was my MOM, as was Solly.Pritchard and JJ.
