The acid test for 'banter' for me is ask yourself if you'd say it to your mate at the pub. People do realise football's a game right? People say 'oh it put him off him game' like they shouldn't still really think about it and realise they spent their Saturday afternoon snarling like animals at a person. I know it's a pack mentality but if you really stop and look at yourself when you do something like that it's just embarrassing. It should be something you grow out of
Big difference between being charged and actually convicted.
Like the incest song, wheels on the bus etc ......just for the brainless type of fan. Might be funny for some, but more productive to get behind our own players surely?
The thing is I can only really ever remember one player who the crowd have singled out for stick actually folding and that was Carlton Cole for Villa a few years back (I missed the Notts County game where people have said Lee Hughes did too). However I can think of about 30 players that have had abuse and scored and reveled in gloating back, but then the people that have been giving them the abuse get all high and mighty and start going garity and the player in question, madness.
Anyway my point is that whether its right or wrong will differ from person to person but statistics show that it doesn't help OUR team and more often than not does the direct opposite. That is my main reason for not wanting to encourage it.
I don't think the "Evans" song was great, but I must admit that I thought it was just about ok for the first couple of times. But to sing it continuously & not to get behind the team, was just plain boring.
Second half, 2 men probably late 20's, stood at the back behind where we were sitting (just to the left of the goal away from the main vocals) & sang it throughout most of the 2nd half, by themselves as no one joined in. They just didn't get it that no one else was interested.
Very boring and very embarassing. I was going to tell them to bore off, but was persuaded not to.
Amazing over the years the number of footballers who have been charged with rape and got off. This of course has nothing to do with having a top lawyer from the club or paying people off,
I mean they can even been caught on TV smacking the stuffing out of some one and get off .While supporters verbally abusing people at a game can get £500 fines and banned for 5 years.
So far yesterday and today we have people moaning about a fan of hours on radio ( IQ dont you know old chap) and people moaning about a chant against an opposing player ------------------------------------- FFS a few people need to go watch an Opera rather than football-------------------- GET A LIFE.
What is particularly sad is that this thread has half as many posts as the match views thread, this after beating one of our promotion rivals away from home, having gone five points clear at the top. People have nothing to moan about on the pitch so we get all this on here instead. If people have a problem with these chants go up to one of the people doing it & lamp them, don't bleat about it on here.

And of course has nothing to do with any allegations being completely fabricated. That would never happen, instead lets all assume every footballer is always guilty and there is a cover up going on.
I was sitting in line with the left hand goal area line and the first I heard the song away to my right it sounded like the Rhyl rape crisis group had turned up to barrack Evans.Far better was VFR belting out made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Totally missing the point - We don't hate our supporters - just a very small minority of them. We want our club to be as good as it can be on the pitch - thanks to Chrissy and the board for that. And off the pitch our supporters saved our club through intelligence, dedication, hard work and love. We are the best fans in the country and want to keep it that way.
Amazing how upset people get over this thread existing. 'That's not something that I would like to talk about! Make it stop!' If you don't like the subject of the topic then don't read it. It's not a topic bashing Charlton fans, it's a debate on whether fans can go too far with their chanting. It's got a lot of comments because it's interesting and there's only so many ways you can say the defence played well and Kermorgant is on form. The irony of people pointlessly complaining that people are complaining pointlessly is clearly lost on some
Can't really see the issue, didn't see any charlton fans not clapping during the minutes clap for one of their deceased for which Utd thanked us for Then singing a hilarious catchy song towards a suspected rapist? Pedo stuff took it a bit far but still just banter.
ANY player that commits rape, or murder and is still lucky enough to play professional football should be lucky. And YES They DESERVE all the abuse they get.
Saying that, the she said noooo song was a typical example of how people don't understand the extent of the situation. The poor girl had that happen to her, so don't include her in the song, take her feelings into account. A much more simple chant aimed at him and him only would be more appropriate.

Seriously deluded.
Times change, you can't change people. All CAFC fans are the same at the end of the day get over it.
I thought it was quite funny to be honest.... the CAFC support was immense thoughout the game!
That sort of chanting and singing what happens in any game up and down the country... if the boot was on the other foot they would have done the same.
If Evans would have scored (and he came close) he would have gave it back to the CAFC fans and rightly so BUT thats football and thats why we love it!!
Everyone was booing and jeering Clinton Morrison... and he scored... but an Ex Palace playing against Charlton you HAVE to give abuse... it will be wrong if you didn't...
Maybe you can't change people - although the Valley used to be full of racist comments but isn't now - but you should always speak up for what you think is right
Will happily boo ex Palace or players that left us under a cloud til the cows come home btw. Just saying- let's have some minimum standards please.
Comments
if saying it's" banter" excuses anything then songs about gas chambers or racist chants are fine.
If not then you agree that there is a line that shouldn't be crossed.
The arguement then is where do you draw that line?
All the unacceptable chants on Saturday were started by Jim Davidson.
Ban him.

I agree that the songs should have been sung. Ched Evans probably expects it considering it has been in the news
Was a Great win for us but unfortunately some people only care about getting home and moaning about our support on the Internet.
