  • Sorry paul but you are arguing against yourself.

You know 5 or 6 people who went in the Championship but they are "glory hunters" because they don't go now.

Maybe they don't go as much because now they are older, have families and other interests.  That happens regardless of what division a team is in.  Priorities as you say. Doesn't mean they are "Glory Hunters".  Maybe they just don't enjoy it any more.

And you still haven't offered any evidence beyond the anecdotal.  The Club knows some of the details but a lot of tickets sold for tomorow will be to first time buyers who have never come before.  So no they don't know who's playing right back or really care.  It's just a game of football.

I think what irritates me is the implied suggestion that we who go every week or every other week are "better" fans.  We are real fans who love the Club and others are less than us and only there for the glory.  I disagree.  I don't feel better or worse than other fans who have done more or less away games or whatever.

To me we're all fans and that's it.  If someone who's never been the Valley is sitting in front of me tomorrow should I'll be happy to see them there, not look down my nose at them for not loving the Club enough.

For the record I don't love the club, its part of my social life and I enjoy football, but love it nah, much prefer a good woman, or even my wife.
  • You can only be classified as a 'diehard' supporter , if you have been to see Charlton play at Selhurst Park, West Ham & the Valley , been to every league game home and away for at least one season , watched the 7-6 match v Huddersfield match and eat 'Haddock' on a Friday , thats me out then!

Thanks for your apologies - again - Henry. I'm not arguing against myself, and I'm not looking down my nose at anybody for choosing to go to the games less. You are trying to make this into something it isn't.  As I said, some people's attendance is more elastic based on what they are seeing than others who go out of a sense of duty to the club, or whatever else. I don't look down on those people in the same way I don't look down on people who have no interest in football whatsoever, it is a matter of individual choice / attitude and I don't think any less of anybody who doesn't go religiously, or any more of anybody who has seen every game since 1937. (As I said, I'm bring 4 newbies tomorrow). I'm just pointing out that I believe that most of the people who have stopped going since the prem have done so because they are less bothered and more interested in the glamour or the entertainment than the success of the club. That is not a criticism of them as a person or a reason to look down on them, its just an observation. When I go, personally that is because I want to see Charlton Athletic win above anything else. Others are different. But if you want to read the tongue in cheek term "glory hunter" as a personal insult on those people then feel free.

Regarding evidence, as I also said, neither I nor, I believe, the club have any evidence as to why people stopped going. That is purely based on anecdote and educated guess. Maybe I'm completely wrong and our attendances won't increase at all if we get back to the premier league or get drawn against Arsenal in the cup.
  • Ignore him Ray, he's forgotten about us little people now he's a highflier.
I dare say he'll be too busy with his 'Media Darlings' tomorrow to talk to the likes of me, he's just going shopping for a new cravat.......................... ;)
Now now boys (sorry oldies!!).....I'll not give you my autograpgh tomorrow if you two carry on like that!!! ;-)
  • Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour....?
  • Over 19,000 I think including 1066 Chesterfield.
    I thought 1066 was Hastings.
  • Very funny 1066.

    We had sold 9003 @ £5 at 8pm; 1075 today.

For the last two weeks the figures have been closely tracking Exeter, but we had a slower start, which I believe was caused by the way the fixtures fell.

So tomorrow we start 2,000 behind Exeter, albeit Chesterfield have sold more in advance and are expected to sell 2-300 more on the day.

We're about 19,500 including hospitality and comps, maybe a bit more. So it all depends on the matchday sale. It was 2,000 last time in the rain.

  • Breaking the 20k barrier is definitely a great achievement for a league one team....hopefully we will get that and more....and hopefully we will get a performance that rises to the occasion.  We need to break the curse of the Exeter game, and I think that we finally have the team to do it.

    COYR!

At my age can only last 5 mins ;-))

Its 6.30 am and getting ready to head down south, see my old mum and then off to the Valley, really looking forward to this game, last one for me now until Xmas (if I'm not on call) or maybe last game of season. Going to be in Upper North, not been there since it was the old covered end way back when!!

After today everyone who maybe fell out of love will fall back in love with the club again. The regular attendees in the stands and the 11 men on the pitch have a job to do to show the "returnees" or the "newbies" what a great enviroment The Valley can be : )

Chris knows today is a huge huge opportunity to put the club back on the map again and I expect him to put Chesterfield to the sword convincingly
  • Have to admit I've woken up feeling excited about seeing the Valley nearly full again. Well done to Airman and everyone for their hard work in advertising and selling them again, now lets just hope the team turns up today! I have a sneaky feeling they will...

  • As for the attendance, If I had to guess I might go for, I don't know....22151 or thereabouts.
  • 3rd highest attendance in the football league today, behind derby and west ham.
By the way preston got 17000 against tranmere, very impressive.
