solly was very good in the first half. Agreed that Stephens faded but think he needed some outlets to pass to as well. Wagstaff made 3 or 4 wrong decisions midway through the second half and i just felt moving him up front could have solved a few things. We may still have conceded but i think we'd have scored as well. I don't think we have the personnel at the moment to really shut up shop but we need to find a way.
Taylor headed the first one out, it hit Grant on the arm, deflected off Taylor again & Grant scored. Grant got lucky. Most refs would have given a handball.
The 2nd one was down initially to Solly's poor clearance. However, he had a very good game & was my Charlton MOM.
I think we were a bit unlucky on both goals TBH, rather than particularly bad play.
Disappointed at dropping 2 points but overall really happy with 10 points from the first four games. Brilliant
Now!!...I have a Danny Green dilemma.
His delivery's into the box are absolutely top draw, those delivery's will cause most teams problems and we will get goals from them but he leaves Solly dreadfully isolated at the back. He just doesn't track back and help out in the way Wagstaff does and for that reason I wouldn't have bought him on with Scunny just getting back into the game.
I wasn't at the game but I have been wondering about this. Don't all those people desperate for Green to play instead of Waggy not think that perhaps Waggy does have some attributes that Green does not have?
I thought we looked a little lacklustre and needed to work a bit harder from the start.
Scunny played the better football and was disappointed in Stephens compared to his sparkling Bournemouh performance and and also at the result although you could see it coming.
Needed a fast centre forward to come on to, as said previously, give them something to think about. Waggy not a bad shout for that as he wasn't doing much on the wing bar helping Solly.
On reflection though not that upset, clapped them off, Solly also my MOM......
I like Solly but if 'we' are saying that Waggy may be a better option than Green as he backs up Solly, does that then mean if Green plays 'for his better delivery' then we need a better RB than Solly?
where are people getting this green cant defend angle from?...ive seen him play about 20 mins in a charlton shirt so still to judge, although i can tell he can deliver a ball into the box already.
just interested....is this something people have picked up from pre-season or when he was at dagenham?
Don't know if we could afford him, or whether we could attract him, but how about a move for Sam Baldock. Pacy centre half....... Liam Legge of Brentford?

Im saying it from his time at Daggers, although i dont see any reason he cant work on tracking back more often to help out Solly.
Yes, hand ball was accidental for the goal but they wouldn't have scored without it - this is where the rule gets confusing as I believe most refs would disallow. We were unfortunate -but the one glaring error was Solley's. Having said that - he was the pick of the defenders up to that point.
I don't think Scunthorpe had a cutting edge but we gave them too many opportunities and allowed the law of averages to come into play.
I did think Solly was MotM for us, although it was a bad clearance it was a good bit of defending to win the ball back in a dangerous error, just a shame his clearance wasn't a little harder and went out of play otherwise we'd be sitting here talking about 4 wins out of 4...
Powell's still an inexperienced manager, , he's learning, so he will make mistakes this season.
Saying that, we've had a great start to the season. 3 wins (two away) and a draw to a team who were just relegated from the Championship. We're only not top of the league by goal difference. Disappointing not to win on Saturday, but we've had a great start nonetheless. Let's just hope we react the right way next week.
Green and Waggy are completely different wingers. Green gets good crosses in yes, but doesn't help his right back at all. That is not his way of playing. That is from watching pre-season and when he has come on. (They got their 2nd goal because of this). Should have moved Waggy into the middle as he would have helped out Solly allowing Green to do what he does best.
Missed the game so interested in opinions of others on subs.
Fully behind Saint Christopher of the Powellites but his substitutions sometimes look weak to me.
Was Green brought to beat Scunthorpe or appease Green who had been kept out of the side by Waggy? Was Green warming up before their first goal and sent on anyway even thought the situation had changed? If Waggy was to be taken off why not Hughes to beef up midfield and support Solly?
Was Jason brought on because Hayes was tired or because he is great mates with CP?
Was Doc brought on just just because he awoke from his afternoon snooze on the bench before the 90 mins were up?

Not sure why Green was brought on as Wagstaff was helping Solly out a lot, but I suppose it might have been to try get us playing further up the pitch more.
Hayes definitely came off because he was knackered, personally thought he should've been subbed earlier.
Docherty came on and sat in front of the back four (not literally). Couldn't work out why it wasn't Hughes doing that job.
Really don't think the answer is to bring on another centre-half as this has a tendency to upset the balance at the back, and the more you have there, the more chance of someone not picking up their man as they leave him to someone else and confusion sets in as to who their man is.
If you're going to play one up front,I think it would have been better to bring on another midfielder to create a bank of 2 DM's in front of the defence. Hughes & Hollands would have been my preferred option. Didn't think anyone had a poor game. Hayes played okay but his finishing was woeful. There was a chance in the 2nd half where he got into the 6yd box, but got forced onto his left foot. We were all screaming at him to tap it in but he insisted on trying to get it on his right peg, thus giving the keeper time to close the angle. Stephens was quiet but all players will have these games. We're a young team and I think they will grow into a fantastic team as long as we have the patience to not jump on their back as soon as they mess up. Not seen any sign of it..................yet!
The game was as I expected - with Scunthorpe giving us a good test. I couldnt understand all the stupid 3 and 4 nil predictions last week, and this was proven by the game itself. We were due a match not ending in a win.
Lets see how we respond versus Bury - a tough tough game on Saturday. We may have to fight for a point.
As for Wagstaff or Green - Green was awesome when he came on but like others, am concerned about Solly being left exposed. Although if he is as good as some think, he should surely be ok...

Looking at the quality of the crosses he put in during his short time on the pitch Green has to start, if we are prepared to sacrifice this to protect Solly questions need to be asked about Solly's ability
One option is to bring on Doc late in the day and play him upfront - not as daft as it sounds as it gives you a bi of extra height at the back to defend set pieces.

Think it would be different if Green were to start. The problem on Saturday was that they changed both their wingers with 15-20 minutes to go, about the same time we brought on Green who didn't seem prepared to track back. That left a tiring Solly up against a fresh, intelligent left winger who was able to beat him time after time.
The decision to bring on Doherty confused me also. I could understand if we were going to stick him up front and lump it up to him but it was almost as if we had a back five and there was complete chaos in our defence. Completely disrupted the understanding of the centre backs that had played an important part in getting our lead in the first place. If they wanted someone to do that job, it would've been far wiser to get Hughes on to sit in front of the two centre backs.
My first game since Hartepool last season and whilst the slack defending was like id never been away I thought some of the movement and link up play was a step up from some of the dross from last season.
I was never a fan of Semedo and watching Stephens and Hollands moving the ball at pace was good to see. Things to work on, full backs worry me slightly and wasnt impressed with Hayes although gather he has been much better in the other 3 games. Green's deliveries were superb, big problems for Powell in that position as Waggys workrate is second to none.
One thing that did impress me was the support. Atmosphere was good and very little negativity. I sit halfway in the East and usually you can hear 400 away fans over the Covered End but the noise was loud and fairly constant, noticeable difference from the last 5 years.
