Like someone else suggested, I thought a defender may have applied the finish to the second. Otherwise, thought we were lucky to be 2-0 up, but slightly maddening to end up 2-2. Think there's general agreement the subs played into their hands, ending up with a half fit Jase on his own up front wasn't the best idea IMO. Scunny were still up for it and this handed them the initiatve even more.
The ref was a clown, however on another day Danny Green could have gone for that challenge, although he was entitled to have the hump... I always thought being pinned to the floor got you a free kick but there you go.
Have a lot of similar thoughts to whats been posted before , so not going to type them all out again , i know you can't compare like for like as teams & players in this division are different from last season but i was interested to see how Brighton started last season, they had 2 wins , 1 draw and 1 defeat at the start of last season ( 7 points after 4 games )
A few facts: Yesterday not a total disaster, however: Stephens, poncing about in tight areas, never spread the play at all.......Hollands, looked wooden, easy to play around, reminded me of McCormack (God forbid)......Waggy, still innocuous, wastes most possession (Does he get any coaching?..Green has to come in for the Bury game).........Sir Johnny Jackson, I admit I doubted his captaincy, but hey, another goal -could have been three- only midfielder doing a solid job..........Fullbacks -both of them (especially Solly) too lightweight..too deep when we could have been committing bodies forward..........Taylor/Morrison actually very good throughout -nice to see Taylor doing his Christian Dailly bit in bombing on.......Forwards -both exemplary-although Hayes maybe could calm down a bit and play closer to Bradley......In a nutshell, Scunny forced all those corners because territorially they held sway throughout.....WHERE ARE OUR OPTIONS ACROSS THE MIDDLE?
I thought the booing was directed at the ref. As for the game Scunthorpe actually caused us a fair few problems, yet we should have scored two or three more. The save from JJ's header was very good, although he failed to connect properly. Sooner or later we are going to hammer somebody
our midfield is a million times better than last years or for many years since the prem i would say!! they just had an off day! and it was morrison bombing forward out of defence with the ball! solly is a good battler he stands up to alot and can tackle! wiggins blocks alot of crosses yestaday!! im glad you like the taylor/morrison central pairing coz they are the top notch!
I thought there was two rounds of booing, firstly when the whistle went and my impression was that it was aimed at the team, was only a few and I have heard worse, but unnecessary and a second was for the referee as he and the players were coming off. @mickfoley I think we have plenty of midfield options both for match day and in the overall squad, if anything that is the strongest part of the squad. we could eassily have made changes such as :-
Going from starting as:-
Wagstaff Hollands Stephens Jackson
to
Wagstaff Jackson Stephens Green
or Green Stephens Hollands Jackson
or
Stephens Hollands Jackson Wagstaff
or
Stephens Hollands Jackson
Euell
etc,.
I did feel for the last 20 minutes that we lost the midfield and Hollands and Stephens were playing too deep and we his the common problem of not being able to find an out let for the ball so it kept coming back at us. It was at this point that I thought Green coming on could have given them a bit more to think about.
At 2 - 0 we lacked the killer instinct and spurned too many chances to finish the game. Scunthorpe deserved their point and overall they posed as many questions of us as we did of them. Both goalkeepers can be pleased with their performances and although we still look a very decent team I think that we lack a real leader on the pitch driving us on. Jackson is he best option for captain at the moment but for me he rarely acts like the general we need. Hayes today was shocking. First touch very poor but he works hard. Wake up call and we need to learn from this game.
Thought Scunthorpe played well they swarmed all over our midfield they also played football when they had the ball. Not sure we deserved to be 2 nil up and thought a draw overall was correct.
We tried to close the game out at the end and it didnt work.
Agree with a lot of the more positive posters here. Hearing some of the more negative comments leaving the ground it appears some people thought we would win this league with a 100%. But every club has its fair share of idiots I suppose. For the first 15 mins or so it was all Scunny, they played some nice football, I though we were in for a good even test and so it proved, we went 1 up against the run of play then the rest of the first was ours. Second I thought that Scunny got at us but what a wicked cross from Hollands and as ever excellent movement from BWP, all good strikers are in the right place at the right time. Yes Hayes should have scored and same for Jacko. But then we took our foot off and invited Scunny in. I thought a draw was fair, it always feels like a loss when a tean equalises in the last minute, but thats football. I think we will learn from this game so that is a positive. I thought Powell should have put Hughes on instead of Doc, I'm sorry I have no faith in the bloke (Doc). Hindsight is a great thing regarding BWP being subbed it was the right thing to do at the time, however they equalised too late for Powell to really do anything. Nice to see Jase back, will reserve judgement on his ability, but looked like Euell, so should do OK. Green was a stupid boy, he should have got a straight red for that, anyone who says the ref did us no favours should remember that he only gave Green a yellow, this is one of Greens bad points, he needs to keep his head. On the positive though great Beckhamesque crossing, something a liked when I saw him in pre-season. I fancy a different team for Tuesday, a regroup and win away next Saturday with Green starting. I am going to end with a negative. I wait untill the end of May until yesterday to see my first league game of the seaon, where was I when Jacko scored? Having a piss!! Mind you, you lot dont half make a good noise when we score, the sound in the North Stand khazi was great! Keep it Up!
Can't really fault Solly for his first four performances, but, it was obvious that at half time that Scunny had targeted him in the air. I think a lot of teams, especially the more physical ones will be doing this.
Don't understand all this Euell hype he is definately not the answer! We have no options at all to bring on up front, I hope Powell has got at least two lined up for this week if Benno is to go. A centre half is a must as well.
The worst....well rather the least good we have played so far but still a lot better than in prior seasons and lots of positives. We are creating so many chances and once we start converting them more clinically well be scoring loads.
Felt robbed and like a loss when they equalised but not going to get too disheartened. Hopefully well learn from the mistakes and Scunthorpe were no mugs having been a championship side last year.
Had their keeper's legs not shut out Hayes' superb volley we probably would have secured a 3-1 win that would have looked more comofrtable result on paper than it merited but such is football.
On to Bury next and hopefully back to winning ways.
I've not read through and my post will probably be a hell of a lot different to others as left the ground on 89 min and we were cruising to another victory, was gutted to get a txt on walk back to car, thought it was a sick joke, as we were so comfortable. But it all comes down to gettin a corner on 87min and holding it in the corner for ultimately no more than 10 sec, what a waste of the ball, if it had been the 93 of 94 min then different but we still had at least 5 min left at that point, really frustrating, that combined with the fact Powell took off all our strikers and 'sat back' for the win makes it a very frustrating and slightly nieve afternoon.
Other than that was impressed with pretty much all the team, scunthorpe were the most organised of teams we've played so far holding their shape well but in all honestly how we were not 3 or 4 up before they got one back is beyond me. Green looked great when coming on and will surely be a shoe in for starting until he either gets injured/crap form. JJ and Hollands were excellent and thought the defense looked solid. Solly was targeted but stood up to all that was thrown at him with some excellent recovery tackles and closing down. Elliot made 2 great saves
After a few hours reflection... the way we create chances, we really are going to muller someone soon!
So true. Sat through many games the past few seasons where we have scraped a win and weve all been head over heels about 3 points but not really seen that it may have been lucky. Last season so many games i just couldnt see us creating anything let alone scoring.but yesterday we could have had about 7.
When the players get sharper and more clinical well probably convert a lot more and the defence should gain a better understanding and the team cut down on mistakes so i still feel confident that we will only get better.
Apart from CAFCBrown whose comment was ridiculous, just about everything has been covered here. In my opinion CP has to learn some lessons from the game. The time when we went 2-0 up was perfect for making those two changes to give Scunthorpe something new to worry about, then taking BWP off was wonderful encouragement for them to surge forward. In trurh however we never looked convincing yesterday, and most of the good passing football came from Scunny. If we can learn the lessons, 10 points is an excellent start, but there is along way to go.
Well I am happy was entertained again, this team will create chances & will score goals. Think a few people are falling back in love with the team again, less aggression & frustration in the stands. Roll on next game, look forward to each game now, cannot say that's been the case for a few years now.
We had to lose or draw at some point. I personally wanted it to happen as soon as possible , it might sound stupid because of course I want us to do well, but I feel like it will do the team some good to realise that we are not going to win every match and that we cannot just turn up and expect to win, I'm glad that it was a draw and not a loss and I think that the results will be the same. Look forward to next week where I hope to see some more clinical finishing.
I don't understand why Doherty comes on - it invites pressure and with BWP and Hayes off the pitch, we don't really have an outlet up front to relieve the pressure....
This!
Totally agree, bringing Doherty and changing the formation not a smart move at all. Looked at the 2nd goal and Doherty just as much to blame as Taylor.
Doesn't matter which way you look at it we're still a massive club In this division and at times (as we've seen over last couple years) refs will go against us home or away, where did the 5 minutes come from?
Please bring In another Centre Half don't like Doherty at all, like Daily hes finished.
The substitutions were 15 minutes too late in my opinion as they were threatening more and more and it needed changing. I would have taken Hayes off first, moved waggy up front and put green on. Green would have helped retain possession and pick out the right ball to slot the front 2 in on the break. Hayes legs were gone and as the game opens up, his abilities are less effective anyway. With 15 to go i'd have had Wagstaff off and put Hughes on to sit behind the midfield instead of Doherty unless we had conceded.
Scunthorpe were good, looked fitter and made sure we had no time on the ball. In the second half they gained control of the midfield and we didn't appear able to respond. Hayes was OK I thought, at least he got into scoring positions, Solly struggled against Barcham who was a real handful, but with Waggy's help thought the duo coped well. I felt there was a touch of complacency/tiredness but an early wake up call won't go amiss. We could, and should have won, lessons to be learnt etc.
Midfield were a bit heavylegged today.Hayes had a bad day and Stephens was not up to his high standard.Green is very effective and crosses a great ball.To their credit Scunthorpe never gave up.Deserved the draw.Would have lost this match last year.
I do believe Solly should have cleared it better, said so at the time, but it was his one and only mistake, but to compare him to Francis 10 per game is not on,however watching the highlights of the goal last night, I would be more concerned with Wiggins weaknest in the air than Solly's as when the ball came in for the second his was very very weak in his challenge, all have another look and see what you think. As a champion of Solly I was gutted he didn't clear it as he done extremely well to win it in the first place when the attacker burst into the box. I thought Hollands was outstanding, but for me I was a little concerned how Stephens went missing for the whole of the second half. First time I have seen Green god his crossing for this level is very good.

if that had been francis failing to put it into row z there would be calls for a public execution.
