Charlton 2 - 2 Scunthorpe - Post Match Views

edited August 2011 in General Charlton
yes we are still in the automatic promotion positions, but powell got it wrong today. to end up playing 5 4 1 with euell as the lone striker, i would like to think we would be solid defensively, but alas we let 2 sloppy goals in today and are not clear of the rest behind us. i can understand defending the lead, but to have no strikers on the pitch, as euell is more midfield than attack, is a gamble that backfired today. still, we are unbeaten and scunny are going to be up there this season, so i suppose this is a good result, but it stills feels like a loss

  • Second actually but agree with the post, 15 minutes left at 2-0 you should see out the game.
  • He only played 4-5-1 for the last few minutes when we trying to close out the game, and we're second to MK Dons on GD.

    Definitely two points dropped.

  • of course it feelslike aloss, but it wasn't. 10 points from four games is fantastic and nobody would have said otherwise three weeks ago. no complaints, just move on to next game. got my tickets for bury and excited still. they are in great form so should be a great battle. if all teams rolled over for us it would be boring. impretty ambivalent about this result it's not good, but it's not really bad either. 2nd in may will do us nicely.
  • bury won 2-0 today it is not gonna be easy next week. The team have to learn to hold on to a lead or there will be a lot of draws and losses this season.
  • I don't understand why Doherty comes on - it invites pressure and with BWP and Hayes off the pitch, we don't really have an outlet up front to relieve the pressure....
  • edited, i am still very happy with 10 points, in fact im delighted, but i just hope that bringing on doherty for a striker wont be a regular feature of our game. i understand it if we were being battered or there was an injury, but today wasnt one of those days, today should have been the day we showed everyone just how dominant we can be. onwards and upwards, and may our unbeaten run last many a week
  • Powell should have made a couple of changes today to freshen the side up! Like what Sir Alex does at Man u, he doesnt just keep the same 11 every game even if they win. We now have depth to our squad so maybe one or two fresh legs would have helped today after having a midweek game.
  • Credit to Scunny don't you think ! We never got to grips with them today and they posed as many questions as we did. Fair result IMHO but cause for thought. disappointing at 2 - 0 but learn and move on.
  • Hayes had a one on one which I was hoping he would score from, their keeper made at least two excellent saves to deny us (as did Robbie), and was the Jason Euell foul/FK really outside the box?

One of those days, sorry, but it happens.

  • Should of gone for it more near the end, rather than try hold up in the corner, esp after danny green had literally seconds before whipped in a brilliant cross... but hindsight is a wonderful thing. bad day at the office but every point counts, just gotta move on.

  • As my brother in law said on the way back , 'we're angry with a draw' , last season we'd have lost that game , yes we threw away a 2 goal lead , but i think that is the poorest i've seen us play this season for whatever reason , and Scunthorpe are the best team i've seen us play against.

Hayes worst game so far , Danny Green was lucky not to get sent off.
  • Good game. Tough one too. Just as well their cutting edge was a bit meh (and Robbie Elliott was on form). I thought we still looked good for the most part however.
  • Change/s should have been made 5 mins before Scunny scored their 1st. Pressure was mounting & that's where Powell needs to learn.

Thought we looked a bit leggy today but there you go.

  • Hayes should have easily had a hat trick today, was really disappointed with his finishing
  • We couldn't have complained if we'd lost. The stats don't lie.

Thought there was an air of complacency around the place today. Alot of the things we've been doing well, we stopped doing. Don't think we played at a high enough tempo and the pressing of the ball when we didn't have it wasn't there.

Have loads of work to do at the back. We looked shaky against Bournemouth and at times all over the place today.

    Hopefully one of those days.

    Hayes had a real stinker.

Green in 20 mins put more decent crosses in than any other player has in the previous 3 games. He needs to be starting.

Another striking option is required as is a another CB with some pace. Wiggins didn't impress today either.

  • 1st half we looked good no real complaints there, 2nd half I don't think we worked as hard to get the back as we have been doing. Scunthorpe looked a decent side as well, and Elliot made some brilliant saves, but we didn't pass the ball well in the 2nd half and it was really disjointed, saying that Hayes had 2 really good chances which on another day he might've buried. Still we didn't lose but back to earth we was never going to walk this league.

Would've liked to have seen either Pritchard or Alonso on the bench today as I thought Stephens and Hollands disappeared a bit during the 2nd half

I thought we were lucky to not go a goal behind. I think they started a bit lax and over confident and I thought the midfield struggled to get going in the first half compared to scunthorpe closing everything down, having 3 men on BWP didn't help and Hayes seemed to be in the wrong place - it just wasn't working. Then we seemed to gain some composure, once they realised that scunthorpe were actually quite good, playing the ball, being more clever, the midfield got stuck in. I then felt quite comfortable watching it, and felt that we looked quite threatening despite Scunthorpe having a fair amount of possession I didn't feel they would score. the 2nd half started the same, and although i didn't feel waggy didn't have the best game, i felt it changed when he went off.  I also felt that Stephens and Hollands were 2 foot off the pace in the 2nd half, always 2nd to all the loose balls around the midfield, they were so deep and hayes was knackered and bwp doesn't run back too much.
when we messed about with that short corner instead of going for the 3rd I realised it would be a hard battle to the end as the players didn't seem to want to keep the ball and work it into the goal but they messed it up there (not helped by the silly linesman) and it gave scunthorpe a lift. I thought Elliot did well, and felt i had more confidence in him than i did on tuesday when those balls sailing past him - he didn't know they weren't going to go in.
ahhh well, it was entertaining and if someone had said after about 20 mins that we would draw I wouldn't have minded, it was just that it was in added time after the pen appeal got turned down that it gave me the hump.

  • Was not impressed with our performance tbh. Thought we were lucky being 2-0 up. If we had last season's defence I reckon we would of easily lost that.

2-2 was a fair result really.
  • Scunthorpe were a better side today, we didn't start well but quality came threw in both our goals, i'd of taken a draw but we just didn't close a game out, hayes looked as if he didn't want to score, we wasn't going to win every game and their goalkeeper made alot of good saves. onto next week.
  • Thought scunny were good for there point today. Still not convinced about hayes. Aways disappointing to give up a 2 goal lead but  10 points from 12 is still a great start.

  • Scunthorpe looked very good in attack and yes they should have a good season but we always looked threatening in and around their box. But I never felt that our defence would hold out against such a good strike force and that worries me. Attack may be the best form of defence for us and we need to play at a high tempo at all times. Gary doherty, bless him, is not equipped with any kind of pace or passing ability and to bring him on was a mistake. I thought Hayes was not that bad today, Hollands didn't really turn up in my opinion and loved  Green; he has to start with ability like that for the simple reason that every cross was inch perfect and if BWP, Jackson anyone can get on the end of any of them then we are definitely a force in this league. Still this is the kick up the behind that we need to stop any form of complacency . I think we should  forget the thought of playing a full strength side for Tuesday.
  • What a suprise, 1 half bad result, and the slagging off starts!! Get a grip people

There is not any slagging off, we are just giving an opinion on one game. If you don't like it why read these forums?

I would agree with you if we are saying things like "We won't get promoted now" or "The team is useless" but we are not!

difference between slagging off and commenting on the game - isn't what this thread is about? posting about the positives and negatives of the game?

I was not at the game so can only comment on the result.

I'd rather have this result now when the club can still do something about it. Many Lifers have been saying that we need another striker and CB - seems as if they might be right.
  • i thought the booing was aimed at the ref? all the players got clapped off by those left in the ground and then there was a massive boo as the ref and his cronies got to the tunnel....then the clapping continued
  • I said it at the start of the season & I'll say it again now............we wont get out of this league by winning 2-1 or 2-0 every game but by winning 4-1 or 5-2. Goals get you out of this league - just ask Leeds, Norwich, Saints & Brighton............(and MK Dons !!!)

Powell was tactically inept today. He did the same thing last week against Notts county & just got away with it...........today he didn't. You can't expect to win games by taking off your 2 main strikers and putting on an aging midfielder cum striker and a defender !!!

I'll stick my neck out (as usuall) by saying we wont get promotion with the 4 strikers we currenty have. Although Hayes is better than Benno (IMO) he has shown over the last 3 games that he can't score 1-on-1's.

  • One of them days, We knew this would happen at some point, Was supprised with the amount of people slagging us off at the end of the north upper, Scunthorpe where by far the best team we have played yet, they looked good in the 2nd half, But we dominated the first and should have seen the game out, On another day we could have lost that, We are still in the top 2, and only seccond on goal diffrence, such along way to go, lets see how we bounce back, lets hope with a positive   response!
  • Also forgot Jackson hit the post with his header in the 2nd half, agree with the bench options, we have yet to go behind and have to chase a game and the subs bench doesn't offer that apart from Green, also would like to see a CM on the bench (Bover/Alonso/Pritchard) as Hollands and Stephens tired in that 2nd half
  • There must be better responses to close down a game than bringing on Doherty - go 4-5-1 with Hughes in midfield or swap Hughes for Solly who was clearly being targetted.  I don't thinkeven Doherty knew what his role was - he could only create confusion among a centre back pairing who are building an effective partnership.  Neverthe less this result may be good in the long term if it stops complaceny and sitting back on leads.
