  • Could we stop calling him McOxo - Ok he isn't the greatest player (pretty rubbish IMO) but he tries and he is entitled to take his wife out for a meal on valentines day - getting a bit pathetic

He dug his own grave by bragging about his activities after a shocking performance. Why did he need to make the comment? It came across as not giving a shit about losing live on TV.

He is woeful, I'm sure the ample wage he has stolen for the last year more than makes up for a nickname that you dont like.
  • I think it is what you do on twitter and facebook. You never know, he might be mates with a better player who we want to sign and he could disuade them - surely it wouldn't harm us to be a bit more respectful even to players we dont rate.

I agree, Muttley.  But I knew AM was no good to us the first time he bottled a 50:50 challenge.
  • It wasn't Valentines day.
    It was their anniversary.

    It was his birthday.

I'm pretty sure it was his wedding anniversary.

But that's the point. I don't think anyone begrudges him taking his missus out for dinner on their anniversary, but it is disrespectful to be bragging about his social life on Twitter on the same day that he has turned in a shocking performance and we've got thrashed.

Go out for dinner with your wife, just don't go bragging about to the people who pay your wages on a day when you've done nothing to earn your money.

  • I'm probably wrong.
  • McOxo is a great nickname !

I think the nickname is great, if I were McOxo I would be more concerned that its all over the internet that he took his wife 'up the Oxo tower'...er...Oo Matron...
  • Yes I remember the challenge he bottled- but to be fair somtimes instinct kicks in - it can be a split second decision that he may regret afterwards. Totally different level but I remember priding myself on not bottling a challenge, then I did it. Was disapointed with myself but in that case instinct told me I should, didn't have time to rationalise why. Players have more to lose if they get seriously injured so maybe that gut feeling came to him at that split second. I don't think there is a long list of bottled tackles we can attribute to him so surely we can excuse that one.

  • Interesting stats from football league on assists, Francis third most assists in all competitions
Kap i love that website! shows assists for each team.

Dale Stephens our new aquisition got 6 assists last season , same as Waggy.
    In a worse team...

Which makes his achievement look better?

I reckon with the players we've added and their stats for last season , were looking at a Bournemouth type of goal difference at the moment( 6th place finish) need a couple more big hitters if we're going to be higher, i still think we need a pacy centre half , and a striker who can score regularly.

When i looked through the stats on us and other teams ,on the Football Leagues Website ,  it really hit home how poor our midfield was ( stating the obvious i know) but when you think through the various positions in last years team , we were awful , no proper left back , slow centre halves , no decent target man , players who couldn't cross a ball , purely awful.

That is why i am filled with a lot more hope for this season , people if you can afford it and haven't done so already , renew / buy a season ticket , the more people there the more it will help the team , it has a knock on effect on the players if they can see we are all behind them , if how other you are going to moan if things take a wobble , then don't bother,  spend your cash on something else , we all need to be pulling in the same direction , can't wait for Welling , not that i'll recognise any of them!
  • He's worth at least a million though Henry.
  • I'd like us to keep Francis, he didn’t meet is true potential last season.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I'm not saying that I didn’t grimace from time to time last season, or look up to the heavens when one of his crosses went screaming into the south stand or bashing into the boards of east stand.  It wasn’t every cross though, some of his crossing was top draw, in fact there is no doubt he was of the best crossers of the ball in the team last year.

His main problem was his confidence, the fans were on his back pretty much from the start, added to the fact he didn’t really have any competition for the right back slot.
Francis has been made somewhat of a scapegoat for an abysmal season.

A player has a few bad games within a team who are having a bad season, if it was me pointing the finger i wouldnt be pointing it there.

I see a comment on a Bournemouth forum that their average wage is £45K, and their top earners get £80K.  I guess that Francis is on more than this, so would Charlton have to "sweeten the pill" if an offer is accepted, and maybe this is why Bournemouths first offer is described as derisory?
  • Can't see any truth in this at all - If we have rejected an offer, how are we going to subsidise a transfer when it means we have to go to the expense of getting a replacement on top of that.

Poplcon, agree with what you say - people got on his back IMO because they thought it was unfair on Solley (one of ours) that he took his place but they wouldn't have been so harsh had they seen Solley's performance in the carling cup - I didn't go but that is what a mate told me. They were too quick to get on his back and if somebody can explain to me how this helps the team, I'd love to be enlightened. Maybe some supporters don't think it is their job to encourage, get behind and help get the best out of the team but whilst I can understand collective booing of the side (I don't do it), I think picking on a player or manager is a form of bullying menatility, especially when it becomes clear that the blinkers are firmly in place so good play gets unoticed and dad play magnified.

  • Anyone who even THINKS Francis is a footballer needs their head tested in my opinion. Personally I'd give him away for nothing and pay some of his wages to encourage him to go if that is what it takes. And it isn't sour grapes because he took Solly's place, it's because he's cack. If someone else comes in now and is better than Solly then that's the name of the game and it might spur Chris on but between the two of them I'd take Solly with one leg and his head missing over Francis any day.
  •  Solly is too small for a Division 1 defender
Can someone please tell me what division solly would be deemed tall enough to play full-back then? this is football, not basketball.

So if Chris Solly is too small at 5ft 8, does that mean we would turn down Daniel Alves, who is also 5ft 8?

Bloody good job Kenny Sansome, Alan Wright, Mark Reid were not footballers then. Mark Reid wouldn't have been signed by you lot if you'd had your way. Solly is not a centre half, he does not need to be a giant.
  • Lee Dixon was never the tallest either..........seemed to get round that.

Exactly.  People seem unable to see past his height and notice the talents he has.  He is  ferocious in the tackle, gets forward well, has a bit of pace, can pass, good positional sense, jumps well and wins the ball in the air.

He's a good full back.  Yes it would be great if he was 6' but he's not.   That doesnt stop him being a good footballer.

As for Francis he must have had some ability to make a career for so long in the game and win promotion from this league.  No, he's not the best player ever and I wouldn't be that upset to see him go (especially if Morrison comes in) but he is a footballer.  There is empirical evidence to prove that fact.
  • Mark Penfold was a great right back in the old 2nd and 3rd division and he was no taller than Solly even with the afro

Player of the year for Southend previously, and been first choice right back in a team that got promotion from this league before. So lots of people have THOUGHT him a footballer, and many of those people were better placed to judge than you.
  • Couple of thoughts from me.

Solly is a way better footballer than Francis, but Francis is way taller.

Mcoxo is quicker to write and easier to spell than mcCorm, mackCorm, MacCarmuck....

  • Nailed on that if Francis does sign for B'mouth, 1st game of the season, he will supply the cross for their 89th minute winner.

  • Can't make out this obsession with Sollys height. He's obviously been on the smaller side ever since starting with Charlton and yet at every level he has obviously impressed and progressed. He progressed before the takeover and has been kept on since. I think that there is little doubt he is certainly good enough.
  • If Solly were the same size etc as Francis, I still maintain that Frankie would be  the better defender. I've seen Solly play twice. Errrr... headless chicken springs to mind. So things can only get better for mighty mouse.
  • depends what games you saw lincs.
