  • i want him to stay alot. he was required to put in the majority of crosses in because waggy couldn't. where as green can and green will most likely take corners etc so francis won't have to keep taking them there's a player there, we would of drawn against southend away if he didn't take free kicks and left for dead by kyle reid. i do think with a better back line and some confidence he can be part of this good good defense, if he goes into next year just as bad. then solly's there who's as capable.

If I was Powell, I wouldn't offload Francis unless I had a good RB lined up. Solley and Francis wouldn't give me too many concerns but if one goes without a replacement, you suddenly have a problem. More than happy for them to battle each other for a place- they both have an attacking dimension to their game so should fit in with the way Powell wants us to play. Whoever has the best pre-season starts the season. Let's focus on CBs and a striker.
  • People can witter on about attacking threat as much as like, Francis is in the team to defend.

He is hopeless at what he is primarily there to do. How many goals was he culpable for last season?

If AFCB offer anything, take it and move on.
  • and be left with solly? if we do sell him i want him to have another rb lined up.

So what you're saying is Marriot, that as long we don't ask Frank to actively contribute to our games he'll be a good player?

I keep saying this, but Francis is good when he's switched on, but walks a very fine line between calm and controlled and overly casual an sloppy. Unfortuntaley he strays into the latter too often. If someone can get him to focus better when he's playing then he can still be useful to us but to me it's a big if. He doesn't hide though and keeps stepping up to make those mistakes and I like that about him.

As Bugpuss says, it would probably be nice to replace it's neither essential or a prority.

well it's obvious he can't do both, rather have a rb that defenders better than attacks than the other way around.
just think we wont be relying on him as much to provide quality going forward.

I don't think Marriot said that at all. Then he says Francis is good when he's switched on - I agree so surely the challenge is to switch him on more often - Slater said it is an important job of Powells to make players better - Francis is a great example where there are signs that if you can sort out the issues you have a good player there. I'd be disapointed if a) Powell couldn't see that and b) Didn't back himself to try and then achieve that aim. Lastly, Francis was a scapegoat in an underperforming team- He impressed me in the way he never went hiding on the pitch and I honestly think playing in a better confident team would have a big positive impact on him.
  • I was being deliberately facetious.

Francis has the ability to be a decent League 1 full back but I think you're overating him a bit Muttley.

  • ALSO

he did have high standards of frazer richardson to replace, not saying an excuse to play how bad he did in games but i think we thought we was gonna get more than he's capable of.
  • I haven't got a problem with selling him if a better bet turns up and we get a good offer but failing that, I haven't got any problems with him playing or starting and think he has potential. Think that is the only sensible approach instead of all this sell him even if he was only on £10 a week nonsense.

Your point about playing in a poor team is valid, but if Bournemouth are prepared to offer money for an average player who we signed for nothing then I'd take it. I'm pretty sure he's on a two year contract so he's likely to walk away for nothing at the end of this coming season and with Cousins, Solly and who knows who else we will have cover for that position in-house and won't want him.

  • Powell said Solly will be a squad player. He's not tall enough to be a full back.
  • Powell said Solly will be a squad player. He's not tall enough to be a full back.
When did Powell say that? Where else would you play him?
  • The first part was Powell.

I believe he will end up in midfield
  • That would suggest we'll get another right back in if we can sell Francis. I doubt that'll be Morrison either considering he's mainly a CB. So that's at least 3 more signings.
  • If we do keep Francis, the important thing is when he plays the fans stay off his back. He definitely has an issue with confidence and that affects his concentration. He's infuriating but there's a glimmer of hope for him.

Article reminds us that Francis was part of a team that won promotion to the Championship
  • Sorry to keep repeating myself, Francis is our best right back option. Solly is too small for a Division 1 defender and his future lies in midfield.

It also reminded me how he must have massively underacheived with us. SLP mention a "derisory fee". A fee? How can we turn down any fee for him!
  • Thats half the reason why our owners are so loaded, they dont just know how to spend it, they know how to make it!!

    agreed !!

  •

On Twitter Francis said when asked about the rumour

'no more than the manager is a mate who i played with at southend.'

Bradbury has already signed Adam Barrett . Could he go for another Southend reunion with Mcoxo ?

  • Could we stop calling him McOxo - Ok he isn't the greatest player (pretty rubbish IMO) but he tries and he is entitled to take his wife out for a meal on valentines day - getting a bit pathetic

Calm down...it's no more than a nickname. Chill.
  • It wasn't Valentines day.
  • It was around new year on the day we played Swindon. I was spitting feathers that day
  • I am chilled - just think it isn't a nickname like Doc or Waggy - It has negative roots and they are not fair and disrespectful to the player IMO. He can't help not being as good as we hoped he would be and he is definitely better than any of us. If he was a good player we wouldn't be calling McOxo I think.

that is the problem he didn't. If he had I wouldn't have a problem with him. As it is I hope he never steps onto The Valley pitch again.
  • I think his limitations stem from lack of ability rather than lack of effort
  • think he's just been found out - no two ways about it
