  • Ah, but Muttley, their fans are way more 'Ultra' than ours are. Therefore they're better. Or something.

    Ultra Cnuts!
  • The Valley is a dark souless place and Sellout is full of atmosphere. Thought everybody knew that!
  • Would love it if we got them in the first round of the Carling Cup and absolutely stuffed them!!!!

  • The fact we haven't resigned Semedo proves we don't have that much money. Otherwise we'd just pay what he wanted and done with, especially as the board know he's a fans favourite. Bad news if true.

Or maybe it says that CP doesn't rate him as highly as most here do?  Even if we can afford to pay him what he'd like powell might want to spend that money elsewhere. Semedo has been offered a contract which we can assume he's turned down, so when he walks away, we come out of it smelling of roses.................
  • It doesn't make sense to pay him the same money -it was a contract we made when aspiring to get back tio the premiership. the point I have made before is that we are not competing with what we paid him but what others are now willing to pay him .And it is perfectly understandable that faced with a significant pay cut, Semedo is looking for the best deal he can get - I wouldn't dismiss however, that the best deal wont come from us.

Palace a bigger club by stuffing their creditors by going into administration. Becoming a bigger club by not paying St John's Ambulance and others. Now paying masses of wages to footballers. Well done, such a fine and honourable bunch of people, they must be proud of themselves.
  • To be fair, their fans rallied round and paid the SJA bill.

Sadly happening too often and not only at Sellout Park. SJA apart who were paid by the Fans, I am afraid I blame the footballing authorities who have structured the rules so that "football" debts have to be paid in full and then clubs can come out of administration with a 10 point slap on the wrists. If they applied the normal rules to creditors and had greater sanctions maybe clubs would be less likely to play fast and loose.

It's always amazed me that this is legal.  I'd love to see someone successfully challenge it.

  • As much as I hate Palace and I do! We benefitted from something similar ourselves in the 80s.
  • are we not liking brighton now! thought we was friends coz they hate palace too ;)
  • I honestly believe he wont go palarse
  • has he got twitter?

  • Shoot me down but... one dimensional, limited player who offers not enough for a decent footballing side (that we're trying to be).

I'd be very happy if he went elsewhere, purely as I honestly feel it would enable us to buy a better all round player.

Having said that I love him to bits and will miss his heart and energy but I feel we will be better without him.

    Sorry but its my opinion!

I agree. We've not been successful with him & whilst I'm not saying he has contributed to our lack of success (because no one knows for sure),  I think a clean break may be required & we should start again with new players who have not become used to losing.

No nice try. Of course he ain't no Messi. He has though, for much of his time at Charlton, been stuck just in front of a paceless, pedestrian defence which played too deep. Last season, when Parky played 5 in midfield, he was able to get forward on occasions, That period, which , sadly Parky dumped, saw us playing the best football for years.

He isn't one dimensional in my view - just stuck in a role for the team that has seen him having to protect a slow central defence.

If he goes, he goes but it would be great to keep him
  • To everyone saying 'let him go and let's have a fresh start' would you rather we kept him but play him in his original postion that he was playing in when we bought him than let him go. Or do you not see him as a defender.

Just curious. I love the bloke and don't want to lose him but maybe we do need a new centre midfield pairing
  • I too am very fond of Jose but do admit I think he has certain limitations as a player. I am starting to wonder if our love fair with Jose is based more around the fact that over the last five seasons we as fans have not really had a single player we could get behind and relate to apart from Semedo. Squad has been full of loans, journeyman, chancers and dross and therefore a player who gives his all will naturally stand out. I do not want him to leave (particularly to those wankers) but I just wonder if my reasons are completely grounded in football terms.

He seems a bit on the short side, to be a good central defender & bit on the slow side to be a full back that has an effective attacking side to his game.

I'm happy if he stays & content if he goes, on the basis that we try to replace him with someone, we think will be better.

Obviously, I don't want him to go if we don't plan on getting someone we think we will be better.

  • No confirmation on this yet?
  • Won't happen!
  • Could happen, might not

Seems odd that if he's already signed a pre-contract it's not been announced by Palace.

Personally my guess is we have offered him £X per year and he and his agent are waiting to see who else might offer £x+ per year and if they do, if we will go higher.

Nothing wrong with that IMHO from his side or ours.

If he does go to Palace I think he'll do well for them more's the pity just like Ambrose did.  Darren didn't become a better player overnight, he retained the same talents and weaknesses he had when playing for us.  It was just that he was allowed to play in his preferred position.   At Palace they will use him in a holding midfield role similar to us but he'll have tall physical defenders behind him (Gardener) and creative players like Danns and Ambrose alongside him.

We have Hollands and we have Jackon in CM and maybe one or two others.  Semedo will be a loss but not an irreplaceable one I hope

There's a lot of talk about us needing to get good players, will players like Hayes be good enough if we go up etc. I think it's more important we have the right balance of players to get the best out of what we have.

There's plenty of examples but look at Iwelumo. He didn't suddenly improve as a player after leaving us because of brilliant coaching, he was just played to their strengths while other players covered his weaknesses. Here we put Iwelumo up front on his own, hoofed it up to him and gave him little support. At Wolves he had a quicker more skilful striker in Ebanks-Blake alongside him, who was also the main goalscorer, and they had wide players who put good crosses in. He went from looking an average Championship striker to a top Championship striker because of the type of players around him.

Ambrose is another one, hasn't changed as a player but Warnock found a way to get the best out of him. Doherty the opposite, came here and played alongside other slow defenders, gone from winning the league, League 1 team of the year to someone that looks a very average League 1 defender.

Semedo could do the same job in the Championship, but for a team that needs a player that is 'only' a defensive midfielder. If a team needs that type of player he will look good at a higher level, maybe even better than he did here if they have plenty of quality in their attacking players.

Hopefully Danns will be off as his contract expires next month  :-)
  • Rumour has it he's off to Hull
  • Hull? Where did you hear that?
  • Sorry, I was referring to the comment about Neil Danns leaving

What a shame if that happened.  Good player and their main man from the little I've seen.

Excellent example.  So often we seem to look only at what players can't do, not what they can.  Charlton Eyes I  call it : - )
