Semedo for Palace...or is it Sheff Weds?

  • IMO he is desperately needed if we are to have Doherty, Francis etc in defence next year, think of the amount of times he slots into the back four when people go astray, covering full backs and stopping play. I wouldn't like to see 2 or 3 forwards get a break and being able to run at the defence 15-20 times a match because our midfielders are too far forward, it will be very ugly indeed!

Lets see who we actually get in before we question whether he is needed or not, as there may be a point where he is all we got!
  • I wouldn't quite say a spoiler is a passenger, but given the number of goals we concede from set pieces it may be better without a player who gives away a ridiculous number of free kicks in dangerous areas.
  • Funny you should say that Large - were you at the Walsall away game?

Parrett and Stewart played togther, both supposedly more all round players, but barely won a tackle between them all afternoon and by the end of the game Walsall were strolling through the middle of our midfield like it wasn't there. That's nearly relegated from League 1 Walsall.

All teams needs players who can defend in midfield, otherwise you're just a soft touch. If Barca feel they need a Mascherano as a safety net, even when they keep the ball for 75% of the game I simply do not see how we can realistically expect to build a midfield comprised of players who can all defend and attack with equal skill - we're going to have to have players who can atack at the sacrafice of their defensive abilities and visa versa. Players who can do it all don't play in this division for long because it's below them.

The Mascherano example is exactly why we should play 451 with Semedo and wingers.

i dont believe he is technically amazing but you have to look at our team in perspective.  We are in league 1, were not going to have all midfielders blessed with amazing technical ability like wilshere or a fabregas.  As for semedo, he is more technically able than most of you give him credit.  If any of you who slated him were at the last home match, you would have seen he pulled off 5 or so crossfield 40yard passes to wagstaff and all were inch perfect, within 10minutes of the second half.  Secondly, to all you who say we dont need a defensive midfielder, then all i can say is, imagine where wed be if we didnt? As a season ticket holder and away traveller ive seen countless times him get back to put in a block and make a tackle.  If he hadnt wed probably have lost more games than we did and wed be closer to relegation.  His touch is also not poor.  in comparison to the others in our team in particular that couldnt be more wrong.  He uses both feet to turn out of tight situations and always uses his strength to hold people off create space and spread the play.  Fairplay it is often sideways and hardly ever plays killer balls beyond the defence, and his performances last season were marginally better than this, but i think some of you are far too interested in flair players, its about time someone who puts in the graft and does the unnoticed things like - getting a foot in and breaking up attacks before passing it on - gets noticed.
  • Anyone slating Semedo on here is just being bitter cos there are rumours he's leaving... the geezers an absolute class act and the only player who look like he cared last season
  • I look like i cared last season , doesn't mean i should be playing for Charlton, i'll leave that to Bexley Dan ... Sorry Dan, are you really that good?
  • Semedo is better

What about the home game against the 'nearly relegated from League 1' Walsall? The one in which Semedo played and we still got the runaround.

Picking out one game is not a good way to judge who makes a difference or not.

We've got a few years of evidence on Semedo and what he brings/doesn't bring to the team. I don't think he offers enough, some people do.

We'll find out who is right soon enough.

    That's nonsense.

No, I was criticising him way before that.

  • semedo is a basic footballer , made better ( sound better ) as the fans adore him . if/when he goes to palace this will show his mediocre standard and ability - i would love to keep him , he does the job but i feel the addition in the form of hollands is a better option and will bare more ability

  • I'd rather have Semedo than McOxo as our defensive midfielder. Can't believe the people queuing up to drive him to Selhurst.

Is your nan left footed Marriott ?

Poor signing... I don't think the other players would be able to play half as well with an erection
  • I think Semedo is one of our best players as I can't think of any that are much better?

He has had a few poor patches and actually think he is less influential than he was (I always thought he was better defensively than Bailey in CM as the opposition used to run through Nicky).

However, when we are playing some of the teams in this division he can be a waste of resources at home when the away team have everyone behind the ball.

I think he'd be better in the division above.
  • I just don't get the slating of Semedo, & certainly don't get the tactical brilliance of those who claim "in this division we don't need a defensive midfielder"

No doubt these are the same people who claim that Sullivan should be our first choice goalie, this on the evidence of 2/3 games & because he can shout. Does it not occur to these people that maybe he was third choice at millwall for a reason ? Obviously i hope he proves himself worthy but until he does lets not get carried away.

Please somebody explain to me why we don't need a defensive midfielder in the 3rd division bearing in mind that when Semedo didn't play the opposition just strolled through our midfield as though they wasn't there.

  • So has he gone yet?
  • That Richard Cawley geezer said he has transfer news for Cafc and cpfc tomorrow. Might be just 1 bit of news re semedo leaving us for the nigels

last season semedo was one of the best of a bad bunch
Deffo would be worth keeping but on reduced terms
Palace can prolly offer more so that's why he'll be off
Anyone who believes that his love affair for charlton would mean he'd sign a lesser contract for us than someone else local is still living in cuckoo land
and probably thinks its wrong to moan after the 5 worse years in our history which has seen the demise of our club from the top flight to mid table 3rd tier wankdom
Get a grip you freaks we have every right to be nervous and wary of each crappy signing after the shit we've just been thru,
the way each non event of a player (who 95% of us have never heard of) is heralded as the answer to our prayers is beyond laughable, hayes is made to sound like the sort of striker arsenal are after and hollands could be man uniteds answer to their ageing midfield
If you're not very nervous now as a charlton fan then good luck to you those rose tinted glasses are special
    Rant over ....

Was speaking to a Brighton mate last night about the Glen Murray/Semedo situation and it appears that our stripey friends are chucking their cash about, particularly on big wage contracts (hence the Murray move) which suggests they may have done the same with Jose.  Together with some sizeable transfer offers that they are rumoured to have put in, it appears they can't wait to experience admin again....

They appear to be buying their way to relegation... :0 O

    Good :-)
It doesn't look like that to me. The one things they've lacked over the past 2/3 seasons is a goalscorer and they have that now
  • To be fair however good a season Glenn Murray has had this season just gone, he's never scored a goal in the Championship, always a risk especially throwing lucrative contracts about
  • Why sign a pre contarct agree ment when somebody could make a better offer  and not publicise the fact- doesn't make sense to me. I don't think he is going to Palace.
  • The Nigels are all getting excited saying they are a bigger club etc.
  • The Nigels are all getting excited saying they are a bigger club etc.
May as well let them crow now, on every statistic apart from League Position we all know the truth... so let's let them cling to that ;-)
  • The Nigels are pathetic- at the moment - they are stronger playing wise and are a Division above us - that can't be disputed  - but some of them think they are a bigger club - that is laughable. Bigger in what way - better ground- more fans - don't make me laugh. A fair chance that we wil be above them in the first 2 sooner rather than later too.
