    Only at Charlton

    and Watford
    and Dagenham & Redbridge
    and Peterborough
and lots of other lower league clubs who can't expect to hold on to their best players

he was the best of a bad bunch

i'm not so keen to turn any players associated with arguably the poorest footballing spell in our history into iconic legendary status ......

and yes he did try hard but so would most of us on here, given the chance

I can't beleive some of the comments on here. He may not be the best palyer in the world and he may have some deficencies, but he has been one of our most consistent players over the last 3 seasons and I, for one, would be sorry to see him go.

Also I'd know who'd i'd rather have out of Semedo & mcOxo -  and currently one looks to be going & the other is here for another year...................so just think on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bit of a strange sideways move, though. Kind of like when Jensen left us in the Premier League to go to Fulham.
Where were they at the end of the season and where were we?

I will be sorry to see him go also and it is amazing how some people slag our players off - It must be a Charlton thing. I have been critical of Semedo in the past but only when he is along side Racon . It never worked.  I'm still not convinced he's going anywhere until i see it on the OS.

Jose is a good guy but if he goes then we carry on. It could really help progress Racon as a player.

we clearly can't afford what he wants , isn't that much obvious to you freaks
  • Racon can go unless he realises that we play more than 10 games a season

We probably can... just don't want to pay it. It's all brinkmanship until pen is put to paper. Either way he's set himself up for a fall with his quotes.

He left at the end of 2003/04 season when we finished 7th and Fulham finished 9th.

The next season we finished 11th and Fulham finished 13th,

Indeed, be careful what you wish for.

If Semedo does go and McOxo stays the only compensation I can see is that the latter can't be as bad as he was last season. I hope.

The problem is that the Charlton boo boys wont give him a chance and the same goes for Francis. New season new slate as far as i'm concerned,

I don't see how allowing Semedo to leave for a rival club is good news. I doubt we can replace him with someone as good or better and he will come back to haunt us.
  • if he goes to another league 1 club then that is piss poor on both behalves player and us

right, were all getting carried away. he held talks with them. he's also held talks with us so we've got as much chance as them. if he goes he goes and we move on. i'll miss the passion and desire but he wasn't the best technically ideally i'd like him to stay but i don't see him doing so with powell wanting jackson in the middle and the acquisition of hollands.

Not really when we have no idea what both clubs might have offered.

Major coup if they get him.

I'd prefer him to go to Palace.

. Why do you see Wednesday signing Semedo as a " Major Coup" ?
exactly - if we wanted him, we;d keep him i'm sure.

have you forgotten earlier in the thread that both his sister and brother live and work in Sheffield. Even if we offered slightly more in wages that would still be a big draw to him.

Something that he would have known throughout, for even longer than he'd have known that his offer would be on reduced terms.

  • There's no logic to selling our best players (if Semedo is deemed to be one of them).

When we were properly skint we had to get rid of the likes of Bailey etc this time last year but i cannot see any other reason for him not being resigned other than the management dont see him as value for money.

The new owners are not charlton and therefore their logical objective  is in making a return on their investment eventually and maybe a bit of an ego trip in owning a successful football club. Neither of those come with owning and losing money on a 3rd division football club. Therefore the will want the best players/ team that gives them the best chance of doing well on the pitch.

If they couldnt afford to keep semedo then the owners are very naive in that they expected to get promoted last season or didnt realise how costly it is.  That doesnt strike me as realistic as I certainly dont think they are anyone's mugs from the little i know of them.

Semedo is after X amount and CP doesnt rate him worth it. Cant see it any different other than that really. If CP did rate him he'd have signed by now or will do after his agent's stopped calling the clubs bluff.

  • he was our player of the year and without doubt our most consistant player

he is out of contract so can go for a free there is no way we shouldnt be able to match any other offer or lure from a league 1 club

so yes it is piss poor IF it happens

So - this looks like it leaves a few with a dilemma - those that are so convinced about Semedo's worth and those that love CP coz he's a 'ledge' but he obviously doesn't rate Semedo. Both played for us for relatively short periods and neither really deserve to be given legendary status in my opinion but looks like something has to give. In CP we must trust.

Exactly, he can go on a free. No transfer fee so Sheff Wed might offer him a good wage and big signing on fee.

If our average wage is still about £2k a week is Semedo worth £6k a week?

We don't know who we might replace him with either. I don't see it as a disaster if he goes as long as we bring in some good midfielders.

Its not as easy as that I'm afraid. I agree that if the directors wanted to keep a team together then it would have been in thbeir interest to get us up the seson just gone and therefore (maybe) not got rid of Parky..............but thats another story.

The main thing he seen not to understand Rodders is that Semedo (as well as Racon & Youga) arel on Championship wages, reputed to be £6k per week and we, as a League one team, can only afford to pay around £2k per week (maybe, for the exceptional player, £3k p/wk) . Therefore any new contract would be on vastly reduced wages - nothing to do with whether they are "rated" or not by the manager, just down to sheer economics............we ain't got the money so we can't pay it.

It will be interesting to see what League One club can........hence why he may go to Palace instead.

  • But to replace a semedo would cost in excess of 400k in my opinion based on signings in league 1

    then wages on top

this isnt a marmite player if you did a poll i reckon 80% of fans would rate him higher than most other holding midfielders in our league

  • Fair enough golfie. Didnt know he was on that.   Personally i think for 6k a week there are better players out there. Disgusting amount of money for a 3rd division player and id be embarrassed to earn that in this league. (Still would take it though!)

I would agree that he's better than most holding midfielders in the league, but a holding midfielder isn't strictly necessary in a 4-4-2.

I'm not fussed if he goes. I would also argue that he hasn't been consistent - he was far worse in 2010/11 than in 09/10.

CP wants to change the way we play - fundamental to that is the midfield area. He was shocked by the quality when he arrived and realisded they couldn't do it. Get over it, lads. Semedo is not part of the plan.
