Semedo for Palace...or is it Sheff Weds?

  • Football is a career - I believe that Jose does have genuine affection for the club but you can't honestly blame any player for following the money - it is a short career after all. My hope remains that anything other clubs will offer will not be sufficient to overcome the over factors that might make him decide to stay.
  • I think we need to start a thread for those who appear to be not so used to reading between the lines. It should contain translations as to what the player, agent, manager, chairman etc actually mean. I'd do it myself but it doesn't seem to be working. You know the sort of thing. Like a 'whaen the woman says x, what she really means is y'

Semedo: 'I love the club and would love to re sign' (or whatever he said) really means ' i've been offered next to f all and although i like it here and would stay for the right money, i'll be off to the highest bidder'

Jenkinson: 'Love the club, didn't want to leave with CAFC not getting anything, thanks for making me what i am' and all that... - 'There's a possibility i may be back next year on loan so i had to agree to a fee for the cafc and slight reduction in wages and so i would just like to brown nose you a bit so i don't get too much abuse as when we tested it out at the last game of the season, i did geta  bit of stick so hopefully this smooths it all over'

    Fair enough.

"You say that, but in the 80s we had a succession of players win this award and then leave".*
*NB Drawnablank did not say this, but I can't edit the who said it part.**
** Drawnablank didn't say that either...
    Hmm, not really:

1980 Les Berry Last game v Millwall, 15th April 1986

1981 Nicky Johns Last game v Sheffield Wednesday, 26th September 1987

1982 Terry Naylor Last game v Derby County, 24th September 1983

1983 Nicky Johns Last game v Sheffield Wednesday, 26th September 1987

1984 Nicky Johns Last game v Sheffield Wednesday, 26th September 1987

1985 Mark Aizlewood Last game v Nottingham Forest, 31st January 1987

1986 Mark Aizlewood Last game v Nottingham Forest, 31st January 1987

1987 Bob Bolder Last game v Grimsby Town, 6th February 1993

1988 John Humphrey Last game (first time around) v Manchester United, 5th May 1990

1989 John Humphrey Last game (first time around) v Manchester United, 5th May 1990

  • All these years and I never realised that one of the best players to wear the shirt in my lifetime was a Duck Botherer.
  • I find it funny Semedo only said 2 months ago he would sign a contract
for life and his first choice would be to stay and yet there are strong
rumours linking him with Palace and Sheff Wednesday. If he does leave us
then this is just another example of a player that states that he wants
to stay and then moves on to another club. We might as well read the
sun newspaper if we want to believe anything about a player wanting to
stay because we will only be disapointed. I really don't believe Powell
did not want to give Semedo a new contract.

    I would be sorry to
see him go as I think he has been one of our better players last season
and is good defensively. Semedo should have been dropped to the back
alongside Dailey which I believe that would sort out our defence issues
temporarily. At least Semedo knew how to get stuck in.

but opponents would lob high balls in to catch him out - He is a defensive midfielder and a good one at that. When he said he would sign a contract for life I don't think he added, "at half the rate of my current deal"! The problem is of course, he was being paid too much and we can't compete with other clubs who may want to pay too much as well. I still think if the differential isn't too substantial he will opt to stay with us- but if it is- who can really blame him?

Stig says (darn this editing thing): If he said that 2 months ago, it would have been before we signed another player that plays in the same position as him.  Also, there's a big difference signing a contract on the wages he was on and (presumably) anything he's been offered now.

Excuse an old fart but is that slang or something?

See Bexley Dan's post on the previous page-

My nephew lived opposite Claus Jensen and the day before his move to Fulham was announced, he'd signed his Charlton shirt for him. He was known as the duck botherer - often spotted walking up the road late at night towards the ponds in an over coat. Think it's safe to reveal that sort of info now. May be why he had persistant muscle strain injuries. Great player but maybe felt he'd 'ridden his Donald' for long enough.

So is that an excuse for us to let Semedo off? If that is the case Semedo should not of said what he said two months ago. It just makes his reputation worse if he leaves. Look at Rooney when he was at Everton, "Once a blue always a blue" then he became a red. It is just not genuine remarks from a player.

  • Let's take a different tack - if your son was offered a contract by Charlton and a higher one from a club in a higher division - would you advise him to take the Charlton offer even if you knew it wasn't the best one for him?- I certainly wouldn't. Semedo will be responsible for his family and has a duty to do the best he can for himself and them. We support Charlton, it isn't a job for us but as a player you can love a club but still realise that you have to make career decisions that might go against your heart. One of our greatest heros Superclive scored a hat-trick and cost the club he supported promotion - it is what being a professional is all about.
  • I think Semedo should go where the money is, you have to if it's a big difference and I don't think he should be blamed, it may even work out better (or worse) for us......

as long as it's not Palace.

I could say the same about Parker but won't!

  • edited June 2011
Parker was a bit different because he left us in the lurch, not at the end of his contract. Was also a terrible decision on all levels- even the proffesional one I am defending and ended up costing us (I firmly believe) a Champions League place. It also ended up costing him a brilliant career as opposed to the good one he is destined to have. (If he had waited for the summer -both Arsenal and Man Utd would have been in the running for him with departures in their ranks.

Your missing my point. I understand everything what you have said but when Semedo said he would sign for life and these strong rumours linking him a move away it is not exactly doing his own reputation with Charlton any good. I would rather Semedo would say nothing and just leave it at that. Having said that would a move to Sheffield Wednesday really be ideal for him? I think staying with us would be more suitable or am I just being a bit too biased?

I honestly believe we would of been in the top 6 if Parker had stayed with us. Then he would of got his chance in europe and more England appearences. The Chelsea move was a stupid one but he got a brilliant wage but its not always about money.

    Ah I see a euphemism...

I'd be ashamed to be a twitcher too.

I dont think I missed your point - given a level playing field and equal or close financial offers I'm confident he would choose us. What if we offered him nothing - We can't take what he said literally and assume he was lying -  from Semedo's perspective the loyalty has to be 2 ways. Not being critical of the club - he isn't worth the wages he is playing but would be dispointed if Semedo felt he didn't deserve his contract.
  • Charlton midfielder Jose Semedo is weighing up returning to his native Portugal, skysports.com understands.

Semedoimage is out of contract at Charlton and a number of clubs are thought to be keen on signing him.Sheffield Wednesdayimage have expressed an interest in the 26-year-old, while Charlton are hoping to agree a new deal with Semedo. However, a mystery Portuguese club have now joined the chase for Semedo with the former Sporting Lisbon man now considering his options
  • Probably means nobody is offereing what he wants- The Portuguese club probably is offereing less but it would mean going home for him - still wouldn't rule out him signing with us- maybe the master plan is to up the offer a little bit after he realises the reality of the situation.
  • Well I wish some more of our players would be 'duck botherers' if they could play like Claus....staring with McOxo. Send the little bugger to the ponds tonight!

  • Sounds like his agent is still playing the game. Perhaps he values he's client more than the clubs do?

Charlie McDonald for 200k ?  that source is taking the piss !
  • Why are we wasting all this energy worrying about a guy who can't pass
the ball forward and gets in their penalty box about twice a season?
Okay, he had a better season than Racon, but so what.....Only a major
clear out and seven or eight clever signings is going to get us up this
time. Surely C.P. knows how lamentable the midfield has been for ages.
If we get to keep Semedo, stick him at centre back where his natural
instincts and abilities would be better served. Get somebody more
mobile alongside him and put Sir Christian Dailly on a short-term deal
    as back up!

To be fair to him ET, maybe he was just stretching his legs before going to bed - there was no evidence other than him walking up the road frequently at around midnight wearing an overcoat, heading in the direction of the ponds. Most likely quite innocent but didn't stop me and my mates referring to him as the duck botherer. In life, if you can't issue a query sheet, you just have to make assumptions.

BTW - Jenson was absolute quality - i remember when we played away at Bolton in the cup in 2000 and he absolutely bossed the whole game from start to finish. Everything went through him - an absolute masterclass and i reckon he was the key to us consolidating in the prem - Parker complimented him perfectly but when a game had to be won, he was the man who could unlock the doors.

Claus Jensen , different gravy , someone who played the beautiful game beautifully
Light years away from the third class shit we have to watch now
And the only Charlton player I have actually seen play at a World Cup Finals (although I've only been to one Finals so that's obviously limited but I didn't get to see Ireland out there)
Pretty sure he came on in Japan 2002 at ht or just after when England were 3-0 up , moments to be proud of
And THE CHIP at Highbury, stuff that dreams are made of
Still we'll all be talking about winning 1-3 at Orient with ten men in 10 years time........NOT

he was one of the best we've ever had - used to drive me nuts this idiot that sat behind me who bawled him out every game for not getting stuck in......well that fan must be happy now with some of the 3rd rate cloggers we've had who get stuck in but whose second touch is a tackle
