    ha, fair point !

though i'll stick to my guns what i said a year ago, we won't see him play for us again.
Love the bloke but fear you're right. Not saying we should get into in an auction for him but was hoping our budget was more than Wednesday.

Semedo will go and  .....and his tackling will find him out at a higher division...I go for 3 reds and 12 yellows

If Wednesday sign him, it absolutely doesn't mean they have a bigger budget than us, it may signify that they are prepared to pay more for him than we do or that he fancies the move.

You don't get anywhere getting rid of your best players, especially letting them go on a free. We've constantly sold our best players over the past 6/7 years and have gradually gotten worse after each (Parker,Murphy,Bent,Bougherra, Iwelumo, Bailey and Burton from last season etc)

You possibly could include Sam and Ambrose in that BRE. Lightweight they might have been but at least they had more talent than we have got.

Plus Andy Reid (that really left a sour taste)

True, but because of the two relegations and therefore finances we've signed worse players every year.

We need to do what teams like Brighton and Southampton did while in this league, improve our squad rather than bring in cheaper and lesser replacements. If good players leave make sure we replace them.

We can have a good season with or without Semedo. All comes down to the quality of the players we bring in. Replacing players at this level is easier than replacing the likes of Parker, Bent, Reid etc - other clubs at this level manage do it after losing their best players.

It's hard to see your better players leave but if by weakening certain areas of the team means that the overall quality of the team can be strengthened by bringing in better (cheaper) than your weakest players then it is acceptable.

Not sure that makes sense but I think you catch the drift.

Anyone who thinks we can easily find a replacement for Semedo that is both better and cheaper  (£300k annual cost) is living in cloud cuckoo land - and that seems to include Mr Slater and SCP.

Would have to disagree, Weegie. I rate Jackson far higher than Semedo, and one would think he costs us < £300k and he was available on a free last summer. In Hollands we may already have a good enough replacement - obviously too early to make that call at present.

    @Weegie

We could pick up a midfielder from the Championship and pay him £4000 per week and it would still be cheaper than Jose.

You're all forgetting signing on fees even if they are "free" - would imagine that would be £50k to £100k for a Championship player.  And it's much more of a gamble with any new player - Hollands, for example, is having triplets in Nov, so that could affect his playing form.  On paper we might save £50k, but it could cost us a lot more than that in the long run...

Don't players get signing on fees for signing new contracts, whether they're a new signing or not? So if Semedo signed a new deal, he'd get a signing on fee too?

All I'm saying is Semedo can be replaced. Not that it'll be easy or cheap, but there are players out there.

If he does go are we going to write off next season because there is no chance at all of finding a good replacement?

Other clubs manage to replace good players without dropping down the leagues, why can't we?
  • Look , Players come and go,  always have always will , after the 'Parker incident ' (Him telling me in the club shop how happy he was to have signed a new 5 year contract in September , and then walking out in January), it taught me to not get too attached to players , they get what they can can fair play too them , i just won't be mug enough to get their name on the back of my shirt again.

My nephew lived opposite Claus Jensen and the day before his move to Fulham was announced, he'd signed his Charlton shirt for him. He was known as the duck botherer - often spotted walking up the road late at night towards the ponds in an over coat. Think it's safe to reveal that sort of info now. May be why he had persistant muscle strain injuries. Great player but maybe felt he'd 'ridden his Donald' for long enough.

  • Here's your POTY trophy now f**k off!!! Only at Charlton

You say that, but in the 80s we had a succession of players win this award and then leave.

I suspect it happens everywhere, if you've just won the player of the year award it means you've had a good season, and you are likely to be targeted by other teams.

I don't give a fig where he goes, it's just a shame that we won't get a fee.  At least an overrated player will be off the wage bill. Racon and Youga are next I hope

Perhaps we should have voted for Simon Francis then?

in the premiership some of you called the players greedy mercenaries

    hmmmmmm

that is exactly what all players are but can you really blame them

Problem with trying to replace Jose is convincing players to come to a club that is constantly seeing their best players leave. Who wants to play in a struggling team............unless they're not very good themselves?

We need a top signing to show other potential recruits that we actually mean business & with all due respect to Hollands & the Millwall 3rd choice keeper plus 2 non league players we haven't actually showed that intent.

Agree with that totally - We need to create a tide that sends the right vibe - If we lose our best players and other targets take alternative options, it doesn't send out the right vibe. As we are clearly not adopting a policy of spending silly money (which usually does the trick in this day and age) we need something to attract players to stay with us/join us and the promise of a successful season has to be a biggy.

I honestly think we have turned the corner now and won't be losing anybody we want to keep - the only two i would be concerned about losing are Jackson and BWP.

Hasn't Powell publically said that he want's to keep both Semedo and Racon but it is out of his hands?

Regarding the POTY comments - wasn't Bailey POTY at Southend before joining us? It happens.

And regarding attracting players, as long as we've got BWP, surely that shouldn't be a problem?

Of course they are. That's why I personally am never sad or mad when a player leaves. Fans nowadays should never get 'emotionally attached' to any player. Semedo, oh oh, he comes from Portugal etc etc; Kiss the badge, kiss my arse, who's our latest midfield dynamo? ... n e x t
