  • Doesnt warrant a boo, but wont clap him either.

Idiotic comment re: signing for life.

He won player of the year because he had the loudest song. Average player who has been replaced by vastly superior players.

    This...
  • Hollands vs Semedo could be interesting. Semedo would certainly have the edge if it was a purely physical scrap, Hollands will need to use a bit of guile to stay on top of the midfield battle. Personally I'm more worried if a classy, skilled playmaker type (oh hello, Dale Stephens) ends up against Jose. It may not end very well for Stephens. Not that Jose would be overly violent on purpose but his main attribute was clobbering people.

Agree. He's an opposition player now that stands in the way of us getting out of this shite league. If booing would guarantee he had a shocker and it helped us then he should be booed at every touch.

No time for niceties until May if we are promoted. Then i'll indulge in the ex-player love in. Until then he and anyone else who has left and plays against us is the enemy as far as im concerned.

I'll clap him then enjoy us stuffing them, which I think we'll do.
  • Hollands will absolutely rape him, and Semedo will have a halocaust of a game.................There goes my job on sky. :-D
  • Gave his all, very average L1 player. Nothing against him
  • Some very astute people on here used to point out that Semedo was part of the problem and for a long time I disagreed with them but now it looks like they were correct.

Bottom line is that the bloke is/was a defender playing in midfield and although his defending was fine he did not have the ability that Hollands has to transition the ball swiftly from defence through midfield and link with the attack.

Too often when we looked to come out of defence Semedo would take the "safe" option of playing the ball back across to our full-back which gave the opposition time to re-positition and would inevitably leave the full-back with no option but to hit a long ball into a channel for a 50/50 contest.

By contrast, when Hollands picks the ball up he is always looking to move the ball forward and to gain forward momentum, this is especially crucial at home.

I think Semedo is a player who can play at a higher level but the key is who is playing with him. He is the classical water carrirer. The points people made was that it was a) a luxury and not required to have such a player in league one and b) we didn't have the right player/s to play with him anyway. My view was always that he was a very good player so we needed to find a way. Having said that, getting that right was never going to be easy and maybe Jose hasn't had too many of the not so effective games at Wednesday yet because I have doubts they have the players. The balance of the team is much better now I have to admit - the midfield is more attacking and as a consequence we score more goals. I am still sad he isn't with us but more because I liked him and thought he did genuinely have a love for the club.

Overall, our midfiled is a much better unit and whilst we lost Semedo for nothing, we have put our new improved version together for Stephen's fee which is @£400k. We also have one of the most exciting -potential wise midfileders knocking on the door -Hollands has done really well and I'm very pleased with him but I do think as the season progresses, we will see Pritchard become first choice. Then to have the Euel option too - we really are much stronger in the middle than last season.
  • Powell said he wanted to keep him and he was offered a new contract on a lot less than the stupid money he was previously on.

All I'm saying is that any Charlton fan that elevated him above any of our other players must be daft . He is no different to any other footballer , he sees it as a career and therefore loyalty doesn't come into it. The mindset of the modern footballer I'm afraid.

  • IMHO, Jose Semedo was a liability when he was playing for us. Too many silly bookings and a few sending offs. If it all goes to form, I'm sure he won't be on the pitch for the whole game
  • Semedo was quality for us , he is a different player to Holland , as a club we are seeing the benefit of him going but he was by no way a poor player he broke up many a play for the other team that other shite signings failed to do in the same team,

Yes we are better for it and no I don't see where he would fit now but I will give him the respect he deserves and applaud him before and after the game

    Spot on for me too.
  • Personally i really liked the guy. Wore his heart on his sleeve and loved a challenge. But like everyone else has correctly pointed out, when you have a person so committed to breaking up the play you suffer going forward. Thought he was more effective in a 5 man midfield but was a negative tactic at home IMO.

We have got better players in centre mid now and we are therefore playing more attractive football. He is happy getting more cash than we could offer and we are happy with the better quality football. Both parties are happy.

I'll clap him as he gave his all.
  • Same as above, liked him, did his job well which was break up the play and play a simple ball. Will give him a clap, don't understand where all this hate some people have for him now he's gone.

I don't think anyone has said they hate him. The negative comments surround the fact that he was a limited player who won the ball, but couldn't put through a decent forward pass, like Stephens did on Saturday, setting up the winner for Jackson.

Additionally, he was a touch foolish after scoring a goal, to then say in the press that he never wanted to leave Charlton, when any supporter who was clued up, knew he had been earning £6k per week & he was probably only going to be offered half of that to sign a new contract.

Therefore, we all knew months ago, that he would be off at the end of the season.

I suppose he was so exhilirated at actually scoring a goal, his heart ruled his head for a week or so after.

Anyway, he always gave his best for us & I'm confident he will receive a good reception from the fans next Monday.

  • I'm not in the hate camp, but I'm also not in the love camp either. He was an average CB being played out of position. Fire & brimstone with a kiss of the badge is all fine and dandy, but if that's enough for you then I might as well sign for the club. I may be 44 now but you should see my badge kissing technique.

I really don't care if the players are fans of the club or not. they are professionals who are getting top money for the privalige of pulling on the shirt.

This season ability is on the menu and we have some hungry boys....................
  • Sheffield Wednesday fans like him because of the qualities he showed for us, selfless and very hard working, a tackler who never gives up. They say they have needed these qualities in their team. The team we have constructed now need a bit less of those qualities, and a bit more guile than Jose showed.

I don't think Jose has ever pretended to be a player he is not, he played to his strengths for us, and is doing so now at Sheffield Wednesday. I can well see how Jose became talismanic for us in the last couple of seasons when we needed his attitude more often than not.

Loads of us  appreciated what he brought to the team, he rightly was voted supporters player of the season....and I will most certainly be giving him warm applause.

However, Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday have moved on, and I would like to think that we now have some quality all over the pitch, it remains to be seen if Wednesday do. I hope we have a steely determination next Monday, don't get caught up in any hype, all transfer dealings over, have a full squad to choose from and compete with the attitude we have shown recently, especially the attitude we had against Reading.

Welcome Jose back, but don't let him leave with any points.

  • Semedo is a solid defensive midfielder but he needs someone creative alongside him. It was Racon who let the side down. Semedo did his job and he did it well.

  • What Seth said.

But will still be interesting to see whether Prutton-Semedo or Hollands-Stephens will win out.  Certainly their midfield looks a bit more, ahem, robust than ours does.
  • Yes will applaud him, he wasn't the most talented players but gave his all. Then if he playes like someone tied his boot laces together and we rule the midfield I will smile smugly and it will reinforce my views that Powell has indeed got it right.

    "Like"
I have to agree he was one of our better players but what we have now is so much more of a team.

I am happy to admit I was wrong about him and Racon going being a bad thing.
  • We should also think about how applause or booing might affect his performance against us.
I think it is better to remind Semedo of how much he likes Charlton and the fans as it will might take the edge off his performance.
By booing we reinforce his decision to move and up the stakes for a better performance.
There must be a lifer who is a bit of a psychologist who can support my theory.
  • I will clap him.
  • Booing tends to spur on players , applauding him might also fill him with confidence. I think the best thing to do from a phychological point of view would be absolutely nothing. When his name is read out not a clap, not a boo, like he's a player we've never heard of. Obviously this won't happen but I think it might leave him a bit confused.
  • "Booing tends to spur on opposing players", I think you meant, Talal?
  • Thought that was obvious, but yeah.

  • Agree that psychologically no reaction at all would probably be the most effective but I'll clap him anyway - just the once mind- then cheer us on to victory.
  • will politely clap. If I hear the Semedo song though from the North Stand I'll be right royally pissed off.
