Who cares, it took him 100 games more to score the same number of goals as Pawel Abbot.........Hardly the goal scoring partner for BWP that we (I?) was hoping for.
  • Not all successful strike partnerships are based on both forwards scoring at comparative rates though charltonbob... and sometimes, for the sake of ego, it's better for business that they aren't - sometimes you get your out and out poacher who gets all the glory but deep down knows he owes a large chunk of it to the under-represented work put in by his foil

    Sutton & Shearer
    Quinn & Phillips

Look how much success young Lee Tomlin had with CMS for Peterborough especially in the second half of the season

Deon Burton put in a formidable shift for us in the face of widespread disdain, his biggest problem was he was the "lesser" half of a partnership that had no partner.

I think the days of striking partnerships are gone, well in the way I remember them anyway. Teams are more used to changing systems, styles and are far more flexible in their approach to games. Even in league one. You see teams setting up differently for home/away fixtures, against top/bottom teams. So maybe when we look at strikers the question shouldn't be can they play with BWP but what options to they offer Powell? Can they play deep? Drift to the wing? Can they replace BWP as a sub?

So, is here ours yet then? Where are our inside men?

People keep bleating on about his goal scoring (or lack of it). Think back to Carl Leaburn. One of the worst scoring records in modern football yet he was constantly picked week in week out. Teams hated playing against him yet his contribution seemed to go largely unnoticed by the fans and he became a long-standing joke with us, me included. It took a long time to realise what an important job he done for us. Like Leaburn, Hayes is a FORWARD not a STRIKER. Big difference...................

he's signing then according to that tweet, we read to much into records. he might not be prolific but i don't see CP signing him for his goals. more his link up and assist's for somebody who's only good for goals. BWP.

His goalscoring record is decent - in fact his games to goals ratio is better than BWP's (97 in 363 games v 52 in 219). He also has a history of being promoted out of League 1 in high scoring Scunthorpe sides. That can only be a good thing.
  • Apparently Watford and Doncaster are in for him now...

    "Apparently"

If he is touring our training ground, meeting the staff and having a medical, surely his mind is set on us....

    Surely...
  • Well Doncaster defeats the point in "returning south" obviously... and as others have said, if he's meeting the chairman and having a medical today he's hardly going to be playing hardball

added to the fact that on Sunday around 11pm he tweeted "so glad to be back in essex" (or something similar). he also hinted about "getting things done" before going on holiday and today "talking about" (to go with his wedding anniversary and the recent birth of his 3rd child) £I really hope today turns out to be everything I want it to be" surely gives an indication

    a) He can rule out Doncaster

    b) His mind is already "on his mind on something that he is hoping that what he has beeen told in ADVANCE comes to fruition". Would personal terms would have been agreed by now and he has moved back down South with anticipation of passing a medical, being impressed with our setup and the "getting things done" is signing his contract, agreeing personal terms.

    c) Is Watford a better prpspect than us? Surely is it better to drive to Charlton than Watford?

Potentially we have more to offer than them long term.

His Tweet only said "I hope today turns out to be everything I want it to be!!" - nothing in there about Charlton...

If Watford want him then it could be difficult but don't think it would be the sort of signing that would appease Watford fans who are unhappy about the sales of Graham and Buckley.

I still think we have a decent chance of getting him and hopefully we'll find out today.

    This.

If it is us or Watford he'll go to Watford. More money, higher league. Get used to it people.

The league we are in and the perpetual downward spiral we have been on will put lots of players off.
  • True I doubt he'll sign for us
