Heaven knows what people would've made of us signing Clive Mendonca and Mark Kinsella if Charlton Life had existed in those days.
    Hear, hear

I would say the reason for everyone's nervousness and tetchyness is due to the fact we're still in this damp squib of a league and this is new depressing territory for most Charlton fans
and the "significant" investment and being able to compete in the Championship line would have led some to believe that we may have had a Soton style spend up, which in reality took two seasons to complete but anyone with half a brain knew they would go up and I'd wager they will compete next year cos those were strong signings in the likes of Lambert and Fonte?(the palace defender) but so far our spending is at a much poorer level than where the saints were shopping

    Rich Cawley has tweeted

I'm hearing that striker Paul Hayes sets for talks with #cafc this weekend, club confident of getting their man

Essex Al has the inside scoop on this not you Rich Crawley.
  • Im not happy if we sign Hayes and Notts County sign Harewood.

It is painfull to se how far we have fallen in such a very short time, and most weeks we are reminded of that fact. I try to remind myself we are not very good side playing in the 3rd level but sometimes its hard to take when you look at the level of the player we can afford or cant as the case maybe.

Rebuilding ? yes herd all that old cobblers ----Dowie---Pardew---PardewMK2  all did the rebuilding thing each with a smaller budget and each made a f**k up of it. Now Powell has  2 bob , 2 apples and an orange as his budget we all hope that he can improve what was the worst team team ever to wear the shirt.

I dont expect top class players ---- we are so far down the pecking order numpty outfits like Notts County (a small team even in their own street!!) have more pulling power or Huddersfield (FFS) are a bigger team. However it would be such an uplift to get just one, just one player who you didnt have to check some old statoShit to see who the hell he is.

  • And what recent stats suggest that Harewood is worth a punt.I wouldnt want him anywhere near this club personally!
  • Not what Mr Slater said. Significant investment to build a promotion winning side that would compete in the Championship.

Ha Ha Ha he did actually say that didn't he..............Now some people are claiming that signing on fees, wages etc equal significant investment. We have been signing free transfers for the last three seasons so what has changed with our transfer policy ? Yes we may (?) be on a more sound financial footing but what is the difference between the actual transfer targets this season ? HollandsvReid who didn't think that Reid was a very good signing ?  Hayes 363 games-97goalsvAbbott  274games 93goals. Will Hayes prove to be better than Abbott? (if he signs) 2/3 non league signings? we'll have to see but at 25 pritchard is unlikely to improve his basic skill level.

Have to wait & see of course but it seems that this will be the level of signings, so all of this talk of we haven't taken over to run a club in the 1st Division & yet we're expected to win promotion with a team of 1st Division & lower grade players with an inexperienced manager who has done nothing so far to suggest that he's up to the job.

The biggest mystery to me tho' is why did they reduce the cost of season tickets when I'm sure that most who have renewed would have renewed anyway if they had just kept it at the same level. It just doesn't make sense unless done to convince supporters that they were good guys while preparing to let the last few Championship standard players just walk away.

So far of the four signings I'm encouraged - Hollands and Sullivan are capable first team players and I'd have no worries if they were regular starters. Prichard has been given a one year contract to basically prove that he's worth being given something longer, but I doubt will be nothing more than a squad/bench player and Pope represents investment in the youth/reserve team with an eye on the next generation of players.

It's not yet June and the first team has been strengthened, the squad has a hungry but raw player added to it and the Charlton team of tomorrow has been catered for. If the rumours about Hayes are true then the first team will have another regular starter in its ranks.

For those that crave "significant" investment bear in mind that the club made massive losses last season and will again next, and success doesn't always follow if you spend big money. Southampton spent by L1 standards a fortune but only scraped automatic promotion on the last day of the season. In reality they should have walked it.

Strange as it is I basically agree with you BFR!

Scored 5 in 16 for Blackpool and 4 in 10 for Barnsley in the season just gone

  • It might not be down to the fact we can't afford harewood. It might just mean Powell doesn't want someone slipping further and further down the leagues in his career playing in a charlton shirt. I wouldn't spend my money on harewood
  • Proven striker, scored at the top level, would terrorise defenders in this league.......no why the hell would we want him?

That's what Dowie thought when he signed Hasselbaink and let Bartlett and Bothroyd go.

No saying Harewood would definitely be like that, but players dropping down divisions don't always destroy the league they come into.
  • I would just think he would come here. Get high wages and be another jfh. There must be a reason why his gone from prem to champ to possible league 1
  • If Hayes is Championship striker little Fergie would take him to Posh to replace Mikhail-Smith.

They have got someone lined up for "far in excess" of their record signing from a lower division according to their mad Chairman.

Their record signing is £400k so looking at 7 figures who is out there in L1 or L2 for that kind of valuation? Only one I could think of is Tubbs from Crawley and as if they'd sell

I think it's been revealed he's off, Rotherham have accepted that and £150,000 ish might make things happen, definitely would have been a big value last summer though when silly money was being discussed.

  • Posh are trying to sign Sam Baldock from MK Dons and have had a bid turned down.

It was Sam Baldock of MK Dons and the bid was rejected.

EDIT - Mart beats me too it by seconds!
  • Blimey wouldn't have thought that.
  • you lot have to remember we aint in the championship yet
hayes at best is a league one striker and hence we are league one would be a decent signing some people have their heads in the clouds
thinking were gunna sign andy reid and people of that standard get real guys id be happy with iwelumo back at this current time
  • Sorry, Hayes' goal scoring record does not justify all the interest being shown in him.

As for le Fondre, I have been advocating signing him for the past 4 years. Now, I fear the horse has bolted. He was on the bench at the end of last season and might be the type who is great in a winning side and not so good in a losing one. A modern day Jimmy the Greaves. Perhaps defenders have sussed him out and he looks to have lost that razor sharpness over the first five yards, so essential to a 'fox in the box' type of striker.

  • They bid £1M for Baldock.

    nearly £3M for Morison...?

    World's gone mad!

    World's gone mad!
I was thinking that. Way too high for average players.
  • Hayes scores goals but that is not all to his game.

He's the player that makes the ball stick up front, brings team mates into the game and creates goalscoringchances.

Last season there was nobody in the team playing that role successfully.
That's what justifies the interest in him.
