  • ....but Michael Slater said that we were going to build a team that would not only get us out of this league but could also compete in the Championship as well.

can Hayes do that ???????  according to reports.....................NO.

  • Jesus Golfie, one step at a time - yeah?
  • I just don't want to be in a position in a years time if, God willing, we got promoted, and then had to rebuild YET AGAIN because the players we have aren't good enough.
  • paul hayes is the prolific striker who got promoted with scunny isnt he!!??
  • No worries Golf, we've been promised "significant investment" ;-)
  • Jesus Golfie, one step at a time - yeah?

Not what Mr Slater said. Significant investment to build a promotion winning side that would compete in the Championship.

What, so you're writing off our new signings as not being good enough for the Championship too then?

Unbelievable. I'm going before I slash my wrists.
  • Let's give him a chance first! He hasn't even signed yet! More concerned we have the right manager in charge at the moment as a good one gets average players playing above their level, let's hope Powell can get the best out of him.

As Golfie and Clem have said Mr Slater said we would build a team not only capable of getting out of League 1 but also of competing in the Championship. If Hayes is a good League 1 striker only then he doesn't fit that criteria. There is no harm in saying that is there?
  • Well perhaps CP and MS think he is good enough for The Championship ! Not telling us porkies then is he ? Can't believe the negativity here sometimes.

His record at Barnsley and Preston would suggest otherwise.

He's not our player yet. Hope he does the business if he comes. Not convinced he will push us on if we go up.
  • Has anyone talked to any Preston or Barnsley fans to ask what he is like as a player ? There seems to be a lot of speculation on the thread. Is he any good ?

Consensus is league 1 is about his level.

I couldn't care less if these players are good enough for the championship right now, I'd rather have the enjoyment of crossing that bridge when (not if) we get to it.
  • With the right player next to him I think Hayes could be a decent Championship striker, but his partner needs to be quick with a good understanding of how Hayes playes, that's where it went wrong with him at Preston, they don't have a quick player to play alongside him and he needs that e.g at Scunny he had Hooper with us BWP. I have a very good feeling about this if he signs .

Yeah but you said that about Benson   :-(

That's all very well but until we sign Lionel Messi some people won't be happy, even if we did they'd find something else to whine about.

Ha Ha Ha he did actually say that didn't he..............Now some people are claiming that signing on fees, wages etc equal significant investment. We have been signing free transfers for the last three seasons so what has changed with our transfer policy ? Yes we may (?) be on a more sound financial footing but what is the difference between the actual transfer targets this season ? HollandsvReid who didn't think that Reid was a very good signing ?  Hayes 363 games-97goalsvAbbott  274games 93goals. Will Hayes prove to be better than Abbott? (if he signs) 2/3 non league signings? we'll have to see but at 25 pritchard is unlikely to improve his basic skill level.

Have to wait & see of course but it seems that this will be the level of signings, so all of this talk of we haven't taken over to run a club in the 1st Division & yet we're expected to win promotion with a team of 1st Division & lower grade players with an inexperienced manager who has done nothing so far to suggest that he's up to the job.

The biggest mystery to me tho' is why did they reduce the cost of season tickets when I'm sure that most who have renewed would have renewed anyway if they had just kept it at the same level. It just doesn't make sense unless done to convince supporters that they were good guys while preparing to let the last few Championship standard players just walk away.

  • Haha covered end :) actually I said Benno was a good signing and I stick by it :) he could have done better with the right service and so could Hayes, the difference is that Hayes can create his own chances and create more chances for his strike partner, Benno is more of a poacher which is fine if you create enough chances for him.

Not the point I'm making. He may well flourish in this, league. Fine by me.

However, our chairman said we were building a promotion winning squad that will compete in the Championship.

Hayes doesnt appear to fit that criteria.

So far of the four signings I'm encouraged - Hollands and Sullivan are capable first team players and I'd have no worries if they were regular starters. Prichard has been given a one year contract to basically prove that he's worth being given something longer, but I doubt will be nothing more than a squad/bench player and Pope represents investment in the youth/reserve team with an eye on the next generation of players.

It's not yet June and the first team has been strengthened, the squad has a hungry but raw player added to it and the Charlton team of tomorrow has been catered for. If the rumours about Hayes are true then the first team will have another regular starter in its ranks.

For those that crave "significant" investment bear in mind that the club made massive losses last season and will again next, and success doesn't always follow if you spend big money. Southampton spent by L1 standards a fortune but only scraped automatic promotion on the last day of the season. In reality they should have walked it.

  • all this about 'significant investment' is pointless as of today it's not even june the transfer market's not open for another month yes we can agree deals now but if we can pick up free transfers and small deals while still in  may is surely a good sign? let's just worry when we can actually buy players from other clubs!

The window for domestic transfers in England opens on the 1st June.

Deals like the Danny Hollands one can be agreed, but can't be registered.

  • football manager has served me wrong.

football manager has served me wrong.
    :(
It's only domestic transfers that can be agreed - and most of those won't be registered until July 1st as most contracts run until June 30th.

I read somewhere that the window for English transfers actually opens the day after the last game of the season. So maybe it isn't June 1st either..?
  • So we've signed one of the best midfielders in this league, and everyone was underwhelmed, we could be signing a proven league 1 goal scorer, and the same underwhelmed souls trudge out. As I've said, unless we throw big money at the problem, people will moan. Significant investment doesn't just mean spending on headline transfer fees.

    This.
  • Heaven knows what people would've made of us signing Clive Mendonca and Mark Kinsella if Charlton Life had existed in those days.
