  • Tony Hazel full back from when i first started going was really bad.
Jamie Stuart, got called up for England u21s god knows how!! And more recently I'd say Edun.
  • It's hard to pick out one. Rhys Williams was awful for us, as he was hopelessly unfit and seemed on the way out, but managed to play on back in Australia.

Joe Ledley's cameo for us was awful, but that was a decent player at the end of his career.
  • Has to be Mike Small, only played for us twice and made a huge, very wrong, impression.
  • Gonna throw El Hadji Ba into the mix. Came with a solid reputation but I don't recall him doing anything.
  • Being watching Charlton for 60 years so have seen many poor players but Matt Penny did not seem to even have the ability to kick a football well

    Christophe Lepointe was forgettable.
  • Matt Penney and Kazanga Lualua are the two most recent players that spring to mind
  • Thuram-Ulien must be right up there. Certainly not many worse keepers.

Did anyone see his 2 minute CV video ?
Excellent left footed attacking LB that we so needed.
Unfortunately the Penny dropped quite quickly when we had Matt's twin sister turn up, Rusty Penny.
  • Shane Westley
Just looked him up and he only played 8 games for us, thought he played a lot more than that.
He was dreadful - little surprise that he was matey with the anti football manager John Beck !!!

  • How about one of two 1980s centre halves: Steve Dowman or Nigel Gray. One of them managed to lob Nicky Johns with a superlative og Cant remember which one but they made Les Berry look like Beckenbauer.

    Christophe Lepointe was forgettable.
And the Polish dude from the same period.

Andy Jones was a disappointment from Port Vale.

The only defence for Penney (and i agree his spell for us was probably the worst ive ever seen in a charlton shirt) is that what we saw of him can not have been reflective of him as a player otherwise i wonder how he had a professional career to the age he did. I assume there was something else going on, im not the most forgiving for poor performance from PROFESSIONAL footballers but i felt sorry for the lad at times he was that bad

No way Andy Jones should be on this thread - I quite liked him, but I agree he was a disappointment given the shed loads he scored previous to joining us - I guess the step up to Div 1 was a bridge too far for him
  • Christophe Lepointe was forgettable.

    Yet you remembered!

Christopher Lepoint's career was decent until he had a car crash. The version CAFC had was post car crash and despite working really hard to get back to his best form, that car sticker should've been a clue !

TBF to Christophe he was a regular in the Gent side and had 2 Belgium cap before he was injured as a passenger back in 2011. He play many games after this but his 2 1/2 year contract ended up lasting 6 matches for CAFC in 2015.

A retired footballer of 40 now and a popular one at that judging by the number of Gent fans who turned up at the valley for 1 game.
  • Surely, Thuram-Ulien takes some beating
  • I was on holiday in Menorca when we signed Traore.
No mobile phone in those days so I used the Hotel computer to log into a Liverpool fans forum to see what I could find out about him.

There was a thread on Liverpool's equivalent of Charlton life about who was their worst ever signing.
No guessing as to who came top.

So I was expecting him to be shit and he never disappointed.

Seem to remember him being sent off during one game?

  • I can excuse those with little ability who at least made an effort (eg Pawel Abbott) the ones I really hate are those who had some ability but just couldn't make the effort to use it while at Charlton - Simon Francis, Djimi Traore and Jimmy Floyd FatThighs all spring to mind.

I do remember one good bit of hold up play that led to us scoring - apart from that nothing whatsoever!

So for the current day it's best to avoid anyone who is matey with Gareth Ainsworth.
  • In more recent times David Davis didn’t bring much to the table apart from a refusal to play.
  • Kevin Smith
  • If we're counting goalkeepers it's Thuram by a country mile. Will never know how he kept a clean sheet in that win against QPR

He actually looked like a fan who had bid the most to play in goal 🥅 for the day , was comedy gold

    YES !!!

That was the problem, it didn't take much to beat him  :D

Wally will be spinning in his grave . Smithy was a limited played but doesn't deserve to be mentioned amongst most of these names.
