Carl Jenkinson

England is well served with right backs .. Johnson, Walker, Richards (when fit) .. if only we could unearth a truly talented midfielder ! .. Anyway, what I've seen of Jenks this year, he is more muscular, stronger, faster and more confident than last year. It could be the Steve Bould effect or just that he is older, wiser and fitter0

I don't think those who have seen Carl play can honestly state that Solly is better. I love Solly and I love him playing for us, but Jenks was better when he played for us and is better now - as evidenced by being a regular in a premiership team and on the edges of an international call-up as opposed to be a championship regular.
I remember when Jenks first appeared for us, and despite his age he was far and away the best player on the pitch (including both sides).
Lets not do Jenks a disservice simply because he no longer plays for us.0 -
I saw him play near enough every game he had in a Charlton shirt. Yes he was very impressive, but I don't see what makes him any better than Solly other than height and of course the added experience he now has in the Premier League?DRF said:I don't think those who have seen Carl play can honestly state that Solly is better. A 5 foot 8 right back doesn't usually get noticed by top managers, especially those who don't have pace (eg - Solly).0 -
Agreed DRF0

Jenks is quicker and better in the air than solly (only because hes taller) but apart from that Solly matches up to Jenks in most other areas. I hope jenks goes on to be world class because what i have seen of him this season and taking in to consideration how young he still is, its not a ridiculous thing to suggest.0

Was obvious that jenks was going to be a good player but have to say surprised he has made the breakthrough so quickly, looked good at man city.francis4england said:Jenks is quicker and better in the air than solly (only because hes taller) but apart from that Solly matches up to Jenks in most other areas. Well if Jenks is faster and taller than Solly, and everything else is similar, then he's clearly the better player (which isn't to deny Solly is also very good)

When I saw him playing for the youths he was a centre back and I think that'll be where he ends up. May end up being our best ever product.0

Nah Solly's better.0

I agree i thought Jenkinson was better at the time, but never understood why Arsenal bought him... but i have to say this season he has impressed me and doesnt look out of place. Bit slow to be a top right back though, but he has done well and would get ahead of Solly now and back then0

I think some people's judgement clouds when it comes to Solly, but in the harsh light of reality Jenkinson was picked up by a Premier League team and Solly hasn't been, so this suggests to me Jenkinson was regarded as the better player.
He may have signed a couple of duds in his time, but Wenger is a shrewd man when it comes to signing players with future potential, and so far Jenkinson is proving to be a worthy addition to his squad. I fully expect him to play for England, whereas I believe Solly will end up being a 'nearly man'.
Jenkinson, Shelvey, Parker, Defoe, can our closest rivals also claim a likely England quartet from their past ranks?0 -
Honestly believe Solly is better.0

I was more impressed by Jenkinson when he played for us than I ever was when Shelvey did.0

How many times did he play?
Don't really remember him so must have been after your relegation...0 -
He made 8 appearances for us and I think I saw them all.Super_horns said:How many times did he play?
Was just another youngster being blooded due to lack of options at the time. I certainly didn't think he was stand out (like Shelvey for instance) and was surprised that Wenger came in for him.
Still I suppose that's why he's paid millions for managing a football club and I'm sat on my computer trying to find a decent B&B in Blackpool!

Jenkinson was playing in a crap team when he was in our first XI, for a reasonable comparison we'd have to replay last season with him instead of Solly at RB.
From what little I remember of Jenks, I don't think there's that much between him and Solly.0 -
I had doubts about Jonjo due to lack of pace but no sign of that now and given Wiltshire is injured ai think he is England's best current midfielder. Shame Joe Allen is welsh, we just need a young holding mid to rejuvinate England.blackheathaddick said:I was more impressed by Jenkinson when he played for us than I ever was when Shelvey did.

Can't understand how people can say Jenkinson is better than Solly. We've watched Solly in almost every single L1 game for a full season and seen Jenks play a couple of games for Charlton two years ago and the odd appearance on tv (unless people are shelling out the £5 billion is costs to watch Arsenal every week, in which case you're on the wrong forum). He spent a lot of last season being either rubbish or injured and he's made a good start to this one but we hardly have the full picture of the two players do we? It feels like people are just saying Jenks is better because he got signed by a Prem team. Well, by that logic Bébé and Ali Dia are better than anything we've got. I think we should maybe wait until the two are a bit older and we've seen them a bit more before we debate which is the better youth product0

It's all people wanting to be the one to say we let a great player go
The boy done us no harm but did not look great in any game he played
Too most he had promise but no one knew

I've been really impressed with Jenkinson this season.
I thought he struggled last season, which was expected given the massive jump he took, but he hasn't put a foot wrong this season. He has real potential, he has the lot.
About the England call-up; if there's a few injuries in the right back area, and he's the best young right back available, why not take him along?0 -
I honestly thought he was decent especially when you consider he played out of position at left back. A Basey with pace I thought then who would only improve with the right attitude.
I didn't expect it to happen so quickly though!0 -
A bit off piste .. but the more I see of Shelvey compared to the other midfield 'wunderkinder', the more he looks like a possibility .. if he avoids too many red cardsfrancis4england said:

anyone who thinks that they can't hold back from a bad tackle in a derby match is not a possibility

Would be nice if he had of gave us a mention in his sky sports interview.
I honestly believe we will be seeing a lot of jenko and shelvey in the England set up in years to come.
