  • Great performance from the boys even (once again) with 10 men we look comfortable.
  • I read that Fulham supporters post with interest but if we are honest in the Prem our Away support was not as passionate as it was at Southend or Friday. The 1500/2000 there were 'proper Charlton'.

I started supporting Charlton in the 70's and during this decade Orient were a second tier club and at times were in a higher Division than us and got to a FA Cup Semi Final . In terms of players they had John (not Johnnny) Jackson or the post Wham Mervyn Day in Goal and quality players like Ralph Coates , Peter Taylor and Stan Bowles saw their careers out at Brisbane Road.In terms of youngsters they produced Laurie Cunningham and John Chiedozie.

I tend to think supporters remember clubs how they were when you start going and I saw the O's as rivals rather like Fulham and a similar club to ourselves .This has now changed and I do not think they can ever get back to that status .I now live close to the O's and their support is mainly as people's 2nd team. I suspect about a quarter to a third of their support is local people priced out of the Prem . Don't forget Arsenal is also close as well as Spurs / Wham.

Unless they moved to the Olympic Stadium ( probably to share with Wham or Spurs as junior partners ) or move somewhere like Harlow which I think might kill them off ,Brisbane Road is now at best a lower CCC ground. The main stand doubles as a NHS Poly Clinic and Chemist and the redevelopment of the corners ensures that the capacity will stay around 10,000 much too low for even the CCC.

However, they have an excellant supporters bar (complete with club prices) which I and a number of other Addicks took advantage of and unlike the C&H there was no trouble .it is a friendly club and a nice match day experience as a neutral.
  • Echo richards sentiments.....
I had to share a cab to the ground with two orient fellas and their kids(cos the tubes were fooked) and their first teams were arsenal and spurs and they said they were priced out of there and came down the o's for their footy
They said arsenal and spurs were their armchair teams
  • Excellent performance on Friday night. I particularly liked the way we kept possession whilst moving forward into their half. I don’t remember seeing any hopeful chips up to the front men which seemed the primary means of attacking most of last season. I thought we were slightly lucky to beat them last year but we were clearly the better side on Friday.

Glad to see Parky made the correct decision in starting with Abbott and Martin. Those two look like they will be hard to handle for a lot of defences this season. The other signings showed promise as well. I was disappointed with Sodje when he came on. Down to 10 men and only 8 minutes left he should not have stopped running and chasing. Several times one of their defenders ran with the ball towards the half way line with Sodje 10 or 15 yards away and not making any attempt to close them down.

The signs are good. I can see evidence of some good work on the training. I hope Parky spends more time on the training ground this season. Apparently last season he spent all his time travelling to 4 or 5 matches a week to watch potential transfer targets that might be available on a free or a loan, and compiling a Championship budget list of targets and a League 1 budget list of targets. This was on top of taking every opportunity to watch matches involving upcoming opponents.
  • Impressed with the way yet again we kept out shape after once again going down to ten men. No complaints about the sending off. The new boys once again impressed. Doc was outstanding at the back, reads the game so well and won everything in the air all night.Bit harsh on Solly being dropped, but I thought Francis had a steady game at RB. The front two worked well together and both put in decent shifts.

Hopefully Parkinson can get in two forwards and a right midfielder before the end of August.
  • red in se8, what a joker you are.

Maybe you could have turned off your cognative dissonance and worked out that Parky took training AND THEN WENT TO A GAME all in one long day's work.
  • it has been so long since i have seen charlton play with such conviction , it was a pleasure to wach , i thought dawson was superb for orient in the first half he would make a great singing for us a good replacment for bailey
doc was superb what a great perfomance , the whole team put in a superb performance , what has happened to robbies kicking he seems to be kicking a flat ball ??
  • [cite]Posted By: Red_in_SE8[/cite]I particularly liked the way we kept possession whilst moving forward into their half.

Not sure I saw a great deal of this, we spent most of the first half giving possession away cheaply because people were looking for 40 to 60 yard passes to Abbott rather than keeping things simple and I think the possession stats flashed up, for the first 10 minutes of the second half, was something like 70% to Orient. That was a bit of a feature of the Shrewsbury game too.

There are definitely promising signs, particularly the amount of pace and invention in the final third relative to last season, but there's plenty of work to be done and I think people are perhaps getting a bit carried away with Friday's performance.

That's exactly right EA, and we are on shaky ground getting carried away with the "performance".
They were the equal of us with 11 men.
With 10 men we gave a great defensive and counter-attacking performance, but I think maybe it's the flattering scoreline people are getting carried away with.
That and the fact that we have a genuine goal threat for the first time in ages.

I did not see us giving away possession too much in the first half. Certainly we gave it away much less than we did last year. But you are right about the start of the second half and I remember seeing that Stat flashed up. I was pleased with the football we played for most of the first half and the spirit and tactical changes we made after going down to 10 men in the second half.

  • Excellent battling performance particularly when letting the goal in, then Christian walking I felt the game would only go one way. Great credit to the lads for pulling that situation round.

Was very critical of Parky for taking Reid off, but fair play to him in the end for getting it totally right.

Waggy deserved the MOM simply for the goal and the assist, but credit also to McCormack. Looks a really good addition and along with Abbot shows Parky is very good at identifying players for this level.

Disappointed with Racon for their goal, very sloppy play from someone who should be better than that.
  • Like the cut of your jib, Red-in-SE8. And of all those who have said they haven't seen us play with such conviction in several years.

It's certainly the first time I've felt the baleful ghost of Pardew has finally been laid to rest and that we could be on the verge of a bold and exciting new era. It has taken Parky some time, but I'd like to believe that he is now finally emerging as his own man, free of the long shadow cast by his hard-to-forgive role as number two during Pardew's spell of catastrophic idiocy and incompetence.

It would be nice to believe that all you have to do is change the manager and the culture, desire, focus and momentum of a club can be turned around over night. Sadly , life - let alone football - isn't like that. But after the much needed mass clear out this summer (whether Parky wanted it or not), he now finally has had a chance to shape his own team and assemble a squad of players capable of getting us out of div three.

The likes of Bailey and Sam are now back where they believe they should be, in a higher division. Good luck to them. But paradoxically, the very fact that their replacements accept they are div one players and lucky to be so may just mean they are better equipped to get us out of the third tier than their ostensibly more talented predecessors.
  • I too am getting carried away & am very optimistic for the season.

However, I don't think Orient played as well as last season & we have to end up top 2 for definite promotion.

If Soton have one of the top 2 spots (hope not), that means we have to end up above all the others.

Careful you don't drown in your own hyperbole ia ;-)

I remember seeing us play with similar conviction in a backs-to-the-wall 10 man away win at Saints a couple of years back.
    Didn't lead to anything.

Whilst I have a gut feeling you are right, let's not get carried away with one hard earned away win, although there were many positives to build on.

And as for his "hard to forgive" number 2 role to Pardew, personally I think that was largely irrelevant. Nothing to forgive as far as I'm concerned

Yes, I know you are right to strike that note of caution, Six-a-Bag.

I can't quite put my finger on it, other than to say that even after our best performances over the last three seasons, I couldn't help feeling that there was something indefinably dysfunctional about our side.

For the first time in ages, on Friday night I suddenly had this liberating moment in which I realised I no longer felt like that about us ...

Perhaps the change is more in me than in the team - who knows? Time will tell. But I suspect a lot of fans know exactly what I'm talking about, however incoherent my thoughts on the matter might be!

Don't get me wrong, I know exactly what you are talking about, just trying to keep my feet on the ground.

I think a big factor is it is clear that we now carry a serious goalscoring threat; and that knowledge is in itself pretty liberating.
Also maybe a lot of the doubters are being won over by Parky at last and sense (as many of us have for ages) that he could be on to something.

Can't wait for the next game - and that's something different for a start.
There, you're getting me at it now!

i think we are in a better place without burton and bailey who i believe did us no favours to how we played for most of last season, where even when we won i never felt we played that well. this side does seem to have that extra edge about them. obviously it's early days and all that, but what more can they do?
  • edited August 2010
I know what you mean about Bailey. It often felt last season like we had to find a way to fit him in. On the left meant we were unbalanced, but in the middle he never seemed to find the right partnership. I also felt he was trying too hare at times to turn things around himself.

Burton was a good player but Abbott could turn out to be a great replacement. Even if Burton was better in a few areas Abbott adds more height and strength, and is a goalscorer at this level.

We shouldn't get carried away but it feels like we have a balance to the team. We're a bit more physical, we have pace in the team and as said have a goal threat. Defensively as we've been fairly solid as well.

Bench is a bit weak but a couple of signings will change that.

I know what you're saying cos on friday evening , I was flying high and for the first time in ages I thought we've got a chance this year due to the fact that this is definitely not a strong a league as last year
We need an incredible run without injuries but barring a couple of players our first 11 is looking good and (you'd like to think) will only improve as the season goes on
    The new signings look hungry
Fingers crossed we may have a chance of getting out of this pony league, we'll all have a better idea in ten games time cos I know after 55 minutes I wasn't thinking what I felt after the end of the match ....

I know exactly how you feel.
  • When Dailly got sent off, this overwhelming feeling came upon me that we were going to win. Very strange, but true! Waggy said in his interview at the end that the sending off got them re-focussed.

At the sponsors' dinner at the end of last season, I felt there was a really strong spirit among the squad, but a lot of that came from Lloyd Sam, Darren Randolph and Fraser Richardson, so I was really quite concerned that we'd lost big characters when they left (Bailey and Burton seemed a bit more distant). But this new bunch, plus a few stalwarts in Elliot, Dailly, Semedo etc seem to have gelled really well and really quickly.

Great to see both Semedo and Parky on the pitch in the thick of the celebrations at the end.

    Me too!

Saturday can't come quick enough (for all of us I think). Pretty sure we will have one hell of an atmosphere at The Valley vs. Oldham and a renewed sense of UNITY at our stadium.

Hopefully all these minor squabbles on this forum will disappear too, I think we all want the same thing and have felt the same loss and sometimes we all turn on each other in sheer despair.

To all my fellow Charlton fans - let us get behind our team on Saturday with togetherness and pride - C'mon Charlton! The players have (at long last) shown us the way.

i'll be fooked if i'm saying someone is good when he is clearly pony ...... but i unserstand your sentiments and in the ground we've gotta roar these warriors onto victory !
  • Everyone battled hard, Waggy and Martin ran their socks off as did McCormack and Racon. Robbie made some good catches from crosses and the CB's did well in the air too. In my opinion there may still be a question mark above Simon Francis (maybe still not 100% fit) and Akpo who contributed nothing during his cameo. All in all a great performance, good atmos in a match that will be remembered for many seasons to come.

I was back in SE7 within 30mins of the final whistle so always nice going to Brisbane Road

We wouldn't have got the third goal if it wasn't for Akpo releasing Waggy. Let's get off his back, shall we?!

Well, he did have a lot to do with the ball control from the long throw in and double lay-off/one-two for Wagstaff to run down the wing for the third to put the game to bed, so a little harsh.

In addition, when he came on we were down to 10 men and he had long balls thumped up to him (was the pitch wet, I can't remember now, hard to control if it was).

I'm hardly on his back by saying that there may be a question mark above Akpo. Yes he made a very simple pass to Waggy and we went on to score from it (due to Waggy's brilliance more than Akpo's vision) but overall in his 10mins found it hard to get in the game and gave the ball away too much. I'm not having a go at him, thought he did well against Bournemouth, but just didn't take the pressure off the team enough when he replaced Abbot.
  • Solly didn't do much when he came on either, did he? I mean, he was supposed to be helping us tighten up and hang on to a one goal lead. Don't know what he was thinking charging into the box like that...and just that one touch of the ball. Pure instinct - could have gone anywhere ;-) ;-)
  • Loved Friday one of the best away days I've been too. Good to see Waggy being effective from a start hope it continues. Thought Doherty dealt with pretty much everything as did Llera when he came on.

Do wonder what Orient ground is like when the away team don't bring more than 500, they don't seem to have any end where the core support is.
