  • But yes, Mooney over McLeod any day! Looks like the curse of McLeod hit Posh yesterday - 3-0 and two centraldefenders sent off

It wasn't prawn, it was salmon. =D
  • Read all these comments and as usual I agree most with AFKA's on page 2. I think he made the best summary. (crawl crawl).
  • i thought we looked worse when the 2 forwards were taken off, there is no doubting Dickson ability he just hasn't got a professional footballers brain. The way he lost the ball in the 4th miunte of injury time trying to take a palyer on instead of heading for the corner flag was absolutely shockin.I think me and Large will have to disagree re Mooney because I feel we are a better proposition when he is in the team and feel he and Burton compliment each other. As much as I like him i also think Basey, defensively was poor but going forward i think he is better than youga.
  • I think defensively we looked out of sorts. Basey is getting some shit but we didn't seem to have anyone playing in front of him on the left which left him two players to mark. The midfield was solid (as usual) although Sam, who had a lot of the ball in space especially first half, didn't seem able to pick the right pass and when he did we scored. Mooney and Burton ran there socks off up front. I feel on what I've seen Basey playing in front of Youga is a good shout. The problem you'd have is who to drop from the current midfield.
I don't get to as many games as I'd like so can't compare these performances to the majority of others but from my own view we seem to have gone from looking solid at the back to being a bit brittle. I'm sure it's something that Parky sees as well and is working to eradicate it.
We look like we can score goals from anywhere on the pitch just a bit of steel at the back and we can go on the finish first or second in this division.
Oh and I must add the song for Nicky Bailey is top drawer.
  • As a female in the minority on here , I don't profess to have the ability to discuss the finer points of the game but as with art " I know what I like ".....

I'm not a great Basey fan , I'm afraid and thought his positional awareness ( or rather lack of ) was at fault and contributed to the Wycombe goal. Maybe harsh, but as someone else said, he's better going forward but needs someone ( usually Bailey) to cover for him until he lumbers back.

I'm happy to have Mooney up front with Deon - he's a far, far better option than Dicko who I described as a clown after his "cameo" yesterday. Someone needs to tell him it's a team game. Too much up his own backside for my liking....

And finally, pleased to see Frazier back in the squad although as others have again stated, thought it would be Basey going off .

All in all, a nail biter for me but it was to be expected following the postponements and the win sent us home happy.

Passing and crossing yes, but Youga offers pace and is a much better dribbler than Basey, which a lot of the time has been more useful.

    Absolutely spot on.

    Are you sure?
IMO he is what he is - a non league player.
A few goals for Gillingham hasn't changed my mind - we should have sold him to them while they still thought he was good.

  • Just watched the "highlights" on CAFC TV.

1] Great finish from Shelvey, that's one of the most difficult things to do in the game when you have to pull a cut-back into the far corner from a tight angle - he made it look easy.

2] Bailey is the heart and soul of this team, he will be off to the CCC or maybe even Premiership if we don't go up.

3] You can't talk about Leeds or Norwich being "classier" than us based on that game, the pitch was very slippery and muddy and not suited to a passing game at all, anyone would have struggled to play football on that.

4] The goal we conceeded was a bit sloppy but I would not blame Basey for it completely, that would be harsh.

we can't disagree when I actually agree with you. I agree that the best partnership we have is Mooney and Burton but that is more to do with the fact we havn't anyone else. Of the current bunch I start that pairing but that doesn't mean I think Mooney brings much particularly to the table. Dickson showed yesterday exactly why he won't make a pro footballer even at League 1 level whilst McKenzie lacks pace and so far has been too injury prone. He may yet turn out to be the answer but I'm not confident in that. Tuna is out on loan and not yet ready for the first team and Sodje has disappeared, although he had gone off the boil. So Mooney and Burton it is at the moment. However, I still don't think he offers much and isn't a goalscorer. We need someone else up there and that is more important to me than a left sided midfielder or another centre half. Bailey, Shelvey and even Basey can cover left midfield and whilst none are ideal they can do a job as can Semedo or Youga at centre half at a push. Lack of goals is going to be own downfall I fear (yes, I know we are top scorers or second top or something but we can't keep relying on Bailey to dig us out all the time).

PS Why did Parky wait until they equalised to immediately bring on Dickson ? Always reactive never proactive.
  • Yep my thoughts exactly Large, poor managing there with the Dicko situation

Change the record. Always the managers fault, never Dickson's.

Maybe you leave your better forward on when you are winning.

If he'd taken Mooney off at 0 - 1 and then they had equalised that would have been put down to "poor management, why change a winning side".
  • You always felt we were going to scrore again at 1-1, just wish Lloyd Sam would release the ball earlier. We could have had a couple in the 1st half if he had played it instead of stuttering.

He must be even more frustrating to play with.

JT...glad we got that Paddy post thing sorted out....now how confusing was that Bald Bloke/Corner box/result of under 8's penalty competition....just one of those funny things where it all made complete sense to you but not to anyone else who was with young Paddy at the game.
I'm sure he see's the funny side of it too.
  • No problem mate.

I was half cut when i wrote those two lines so they only made sense in my head....

  • The Under 8's pen tourni was clearly the highlight of my day!

Agree. Burton, Mooney, Mckenzie are busting a gut to get into the box and make timed runs only for sam to hesitate. Had a couple of excellent chances to whip a ball into the box in the second half but decided he needed to beat his marker before getting a cross in. So frustrating.
  • Ormiston, you are right on all four of those points
  • Parky said that Basey had a groin strain but still wanted to play on Saturday.

Just watched the Beeb highlights - okay only highlights, but as shown on the film everything we created involved Lloyd Sam.

The Burton goal that was disallowed - there was Sam, picking up a loose ball in the D; maybe it was a weak shot but picked up by Burton to dispatch in the net, although rightly ruled offside.

After Bailey's surging run down the left and sweeping low cross into the box which (IMO) Mooney didn't quite know how to move on to - there was Sam in the right place at the right time, and the composure to set up Jonjo for the opener.

Next we see Lloyd Sam collecting a headed clearance from their defender and sending a perfectly weighted pass rolled forward for Mooney, who even though he brought a save from the keeper, shot too early and too weakly.

For our winning goal, we see Sam double marked on the RH corner of the box, yet he left them both for dead and squared a really inviting ball along the 6 yard line ....... the keeper didn't dare commit himself, but no Charlton player moved towards it, seemed as if they were watching to see what happened?

We then the see the ball blocked by a defender, and there is Jonjo moving in from the D to hit the loose ball, it comes off the keepers chest and spins out to a defender on the goaline outside the post, who hesitates for a fatal split second as Sam charges him down - the clearance blasts off Sam's body and falls nicely for Bailey who's first shot is blocked, before picking up the rebound creating a yard of space for himself and ramming it in to the net.

I know Sam can be a frustrating player at times, maybe there are times when his decision making could be better - but it seems defences have no real idea how to nullify him, and he's involved in virtually every move we make.

Also ...... you can see that Sam likes to play the ball on the floor, trying to split defences and pick out his team mate, rather than sending in the hit and hope cross in the air.

Okay, that was only a couple of minutes video footage and won't show the moves that break down - but nevertheless it shows to me that Lloyd Sam's contribution is as vital and effective in our team as say, that of Nicky Bailey.
  • just watched the highlights, wicked how shelvey ran to daily after he scored. daily must be a hugely positive influence on his development...
  • That's the thing though Oggy, just imagine how good he could be...
  • I've just watched it too, and was about to post the exact same thing, Oggy! Let's not make Lloydie the latest scapegoat. We wouldn't half miss him if he wasn't here.
  • has anyone got their own favorite player?
  • Not sure anyone's making Lloyd a scapegoat, as WSS said imagine how good he could be.
  • I sat in the East Stand for the Millwall game and couldn't believe how much stick Sam was getting - I didn't think he had a bad game at all. He'd have heard a lot of it too - doesn't help build a player's confidence. Wingers are always inconsistent... even the "great Ronaldo". If Sam makes a couple of goals a game, that will do for me! If he can continue to improve, so much the better.
