  • The Observer: Liverpool could still end up in the hands of Dubai's ruling family regardless of their proposed takeover of Charlton.

The Championship club last week announced the receipt on an indicative offer from Zabeel Investments. The involvement of Sheikh Hamdan Al-Maktoum, son of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed, has been interpreted as the termination of the long standing pursuit of Liverpool.

Dubai, however, remains intent on buying Liverpool whenever the club's current owners are prepared to sell. Tom Hicks and George Gillett rejected an offer in the region of £500m earlier this year, but remain under pressure to fund the debt with which they purchased the club and to obtain finance for a new stadium.

'Nothing has changed,' said a source. 'The Maktoums still intend to takeover Liverpool and the possible purchase of Charlton certainly has no bearing on it."

I dont like that much.... what does that mean for us????

They clearly have the wealth to own both but I assume there would have to be some kind of arms length arrangement because of the rules which don't allow somebody to control more than one club at a time.
  • There is going to be a load of Noise over the next few weeks, and very little signal.

Some really lazy journalism around this weekend
  • From The Guardian article yesterday:

"Any notion that Liverpool might still fall into Dubai's hands appears misguided since there would also be the further complication of Premier League and Football Association ownership rules. A single owner may not purchase two clubs in the same competition and the prospect of promotion as well as the chance of them being drawn against each other in a cup competition has complicated the issue."

[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]20 million surely we are worth more than that!

    £20m + taking on the clubs debts = £40-50m

West ham are allegedly about to be bought for £100 -150 mill, Newcastle want £300 mill, which puts £50 mill for us in context. Compared to those two we are a bargain, sound foundations and virtually a premier League infrastructure, investment needed on the field not into significant (for Football) debts.

Good news about Murray, but don't hold your breathe most Chairman are going to stay on but leave before they are due following differencves with the new owners on strategy. If Dubai decide to double ST's will Murray still want to stay on.
  • The costs of buying Liverpool would be horrific, Cost to buy, debt, stadium, £50m a year on players.
  • I have a feeling that Charlton doesn´t really involve anyone but Sheik Hamdan Al-Maktoum, Zabeel investments is most probably a vehicle set up to invest the pocket money of the crown prince which is why a two year old company got around £2bn in assets.
I might add that Sheik Hamdan is rather new as crown prince, it was just in february this year that the family conclave of the Maktoum family decided that Sheik Rashid (a more playboy character) wasn´t the future leader they hoped for.
  • Doesn't Sheikh Rashid Yussef already play for Charlton.

Voila! there's the family connection ........

    ;o)

Good article..Not that Sheik Mansour is not glorified in the blue half of Manchester I must say, but there´s been a lot of moaners like Wenger&Co and buying a Championship club is not seen as a threat to the "big four" like the taking over of City is.

  • Will Charlton Future Threaten Future of Talented Acadamy Players ?

Dubai based investors have indicated an interest in taking over South London club Charlton Athletic and if we were playing word association, you know what sort of words that would cook up.

Tons of money, foreign investors, and truck loads of new players.

But Charlton's Academy is one that has been producing talented youngsters that are slowly beginning to break into the first team. Could a takeover threaten a tried and tested system that has been producing good players for the club in recent years?

The Valley has recently seen an influx of young players that are breaking into the first team from the U-18's. Aswad Thomas, Harry Arter, Chris Solly, Scott Wagstaff, Danny Uchechi, Jonjo Shelvy, Rashid Yussuf, and Grant Basey are all products from the academy who where only plying their trade in the U-18's a couple of seasons ago.

But today they are members of the first team and this is the best signal that the youth system at Charlton is one that works efficiently.

Since the Addicks relegation after their seven-year stint in the Premiership, the squad has changed dramatically. Now the new wave of players that will create the future foundations of the squad are being slowly ushered in by manager Alan Pardew. But my biggest concern is that any foreign ownership could alter a club structure that has been running well for a very long time, without the backing of billionaires.

The current crop of academy starlets include Tamer Tuna, Sam Long, and Liam Bellamy amongst others that work their socks off at the Addicks' Sparrows Lane traning ground every home game.If their chance to eventually break into the first team is threatened by owners that won't have the confidence to trust in the youth system, fans won't be the only ones suffering effects.

Foreign owners' desire to employ players from other clubs is a way of life in top flight football that has become the norm. It's only a division up where the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea have owners that completely disregard talented young players, and continue to pretend they still care about the youth system while they invest millions in other established players from elsewhere.

My biggest hope is that football teams continue to trust in the talent they spend so much time nurturing to become the players of the future.

  • what a crock of shite

apart from shelvey and waggs none of the above mentioned are any where near the 1st team, Man citeeh have not to my knowledge discarded young home grown talent yet!

Poor journo trying to get on the foriegn owner band wagon and trying to scare monger IMO
  • I understood that the new owners intend to make our youth set up even stronger!

Charlton are close to swift £50m
    Tom Collomosse, Evening Standard

A Dubai company could seal a £50million takeover of Charlton this week.

Zabeel Investments, a group owned by the Dubai royal family, will begin a detailed examination of Charlton's accounts after chairman Richard Murray said he would recommend the indicative offer' to the club's shareholders.

Zabeel has pledged to wipe out Charlton's £20m debt and provide funds to strengthen the team although one of the key concerns for the group is likely to be the squad's wage bill, which is understood to be one of the highest in the Championship.

Murray expects events to move swiftly, and the takeover could even be finalised this week.
Zabeel's interest is rumoured to have been nurtured by Tony Jimenez, who left his executive role at Newcastle last week. Jimenez had been in Dubai trying to find a buyer for Newcastle.

Zabeel executive chairman Mohammed al-Hashimi said: “The passion of the fans, the heritage of the club and the unique status that Charlton enjoy in the community make it an exciting proposition.”
  • It's not often that Charlton get a mention in the Evening Sub-Standard.

We'll get our new pal Mo to buy it and make sure we get mentioned more!!
  • The comment re the wage bill might explain some of the summer sell-offs, if you imagine we had already had some contact with these guys a few months ago, and wanted to sort out a perceived problem.

I doubt our wage bill is still among the highest in the Championship now, but wouldn't expect the sub-Standard to get its facts up-to-date.
  • Sounds like they may be very highly leveraged?

"Dubai may depend on support from neighboring Abu Dhabi and the federal government of the United Arab Emirates to help pay for a surge in borrowing, Moody's Investors Service Inc. said.

Government-controlled companies owe at least $47 billion in total, more than Dubai's gross domestic product, according to Moody's data based on economic statistics from 2006"

I wonder if all of this is being rushed through because, if not, there's a danger we could go into administration?

Hold on, where did that come from?

You talk as if CAFC were somehow able to "rush" this thru and make Zebeel buy us. It takes two to tango, you know.

We all know that if we don't go up next year then we lose another £11m from the budget so costs will have to be cut again but that is not the same as going into administration.

God, this speculation and rumourmongering is going way overboard.

    Just chill everyone

I think reading between the lines on some articles, that its more about return on investment potential but also sole ownership, this group have been unable to force their way into any of the top clubs and have changed tack to pick up a club that has potential, has low debt, and arguably underrealised valuation.
