  • The thing that really worries me though is we really don't seem to have any particular way of playing. By all accounts yeovil were at bare bones and admittedly they didn't create loads of chances but they still seemed to knock it around and try to keep posession, we just didn't do it, in fact I agree with Uncle, Shelvey was the only one who tried to keep th ball moving without lumping it up in the air! For me that's why I like ZZ so much as for me last season he was the only one trying to play the ball around on the deck. If we are going to resort to long ball stuff why on earth did we get rid of Iwelumo. We can see it, surely our coaching staff can see it, Please put the ball on the deck and pass it around, or get a load of big lumps up front and hoof it, one or the other.
  • It's a bit like your bank charging you 25 quid for being slightly overdrawn though isn't it. You're not going to ring them and say "oh, but you're doing a good job..." in the hope that they improve.
  • bollox to the booing.
What about the fact we go into a season with only c backs ? wot about the fact that the manager signs a wide player and even admits it might be seen as strange when we at least 2 already. wot about the fact it seems we aint got a any money or much chance of going up. what about the fact we have just gone out the cup to a lower league outfit AGAIN ?

all the above are of a tad more concern than a few people booing.
  • Oh dear, so we lost at home to Yeovil and a few people decided to boo the team, Did we do enough to win the game.

Maybe we should look back at our previous cup games and realize that we haven't really done that well even against the "smaller teams".

Watford away is more important and if we can get 3 points i'm sure the mood on here will change.

It's not a perfect squad by any means but with a bit of support and direction from Pards praps we could surprise a few people.

still a long way to go with plenty of twists and turns and a few more players to come back from injury.
  • Goonerhater you still aint said who my new mate is.
  • Spot on Nugs - its plain to all of us that the only way to get anything out of such a lightweight attack is to keep the ball on the deck and get the ball out to the wide areas
  • it is such a shame that our die hard fans have to boo the players rather than encourage them.still,i don't know what anyone is moaning about,we are still second.
  • thing that concerns me most is Pardew's logic. Two strikers on the bench, one of whom was on the bench Saturday and will be next Saturday, but why ? They need experience at this level and yet on the bench they sat whilst Bouzza played up front. Errm, is that where he is most likely to play ? No. Dickson should have started alongside Varney with Bouzza on the right. What we did find out is that Wagstaff needs to go on loan and isn't going to be ready this season. Also Sam isn't good enough, but we knew that anyway. Pards got his starting eleven wrong in midfield and up front. Matty H had to play, he needs the game time and is playing catch up and it showed. I thought Jonjo did well alongside him and although he didn't boss the game he was always looking for the ball and didn't shirk or hide. However, he needs the right player alongside him and he is probably signing tomorrow by the look of it. Offensively we are poor. One defensive mistake cost us but that was all it took. A bad night, but in the Cup, esp early doors, we are well used to that. Shame because a few more rounds would have been of use to rotate the squad a bit and give the likes of Dickson, Fleetwood etc a game and because the finance would have come in handy.
  • Uncle - GH meant "you're new mate" not "your new mate"
  • I agree with Uncle some of our fans are complete dickheads , why boo at halftime in the 2nd game of the season especially when weve got so many young players playing

And the loudest chants of the night were Feeesh and we 8 palace fucking cringeworthy

  • I did struggle with 3 or was it really 4 wingers in the starting line up. 2 Strikers and 2 wingers would seem more balanced.
  • C A F C

Does not matter that it is the second game of this season we have been absolute cack in this tournament since records began (apart from under I Dowie!!!) losing to lower league opposition it is frustrating and as AFKA has pointed out our crowds are falling.

A confusing selection from AP a poor performance 2nd half - to be honest it deserves to be boo - ed where are we going to be after some obscure selections in the league games.
  • Yawn yawn fucking yawn

It wasn't complete cack tonight it was treated like a reserve cup game which this tournament is. We're not going to win it or likely to make a great deal of money out of it. It was used to try some youngsters and what looked like a plan b for when Todorov and Gray are both unfit. It didn't work. Oh well...

Yes it was unusual that neither Fleetwood or Dickson started but Varney up top on his own was always going to struggle, their goal was a well taken one (flukey whatever you want to call it) but that was all they had and I can't blame Pardew or the players for not wanting to bust a gut or injure themselves trying to drag us back into it. I again noticed along with Ketman some really poisonous sections of our support and although they are a minority they are a loud minority.

Now everyone who parts with their hard earned ten pound is entitled to boo, to slate and run down our players. I get that.

Why though put more energy into doing that at the first available moment than offering some vocal support??? If anyone can give me a sensible answer then fair one but I've been scratching my head and can't work it out.
  • Varney has always been talked up on this forum but from what I saw last season he is a poor finisher

no composure in front of goal and a tendancy to blaze it high, wide and handsome

I think anybody expecting him to score 20-25 goals this season is being a tad optimistic...
  • Some of the " I don't boo so I'm more of a fan than you" bollox that is spouted on here really gets my goat but thats only MY opinion.

    .............

The point that some people are trying to put across is that booing doesn't help the players, therefore it's counterproductive.

To lose a game like last night is disappointing, but with a small squad it shouldn't bother us that we don't have to risk players getting injured/suspended in a mickey mouse competition.

Watford is the more important game and Hudson and Gray will be back, possibly Racon too and hopefully by then we'll know if Faye is on his way or not and if he does go then it frees up some money to get in a new centre-back and midfielder.
  • Good commensense post BFR - it put's things in proper perspective.

    And read Carter's post again.

    He's bang on.

My take and yes i did go.........

I thought we were poor and the worse thing was lack of intelligence in my opinion. We had no 'clever' option to get round and past them.

There were some positives though and if we treat it as a game to learn something then we learnt

    1) Mootakil is not a first choice right back
    2) Youga is not and never will be a centre half
    3) Basey looks a little slow
    4) Thomas is a one trick pony
    5) Sam needs to go to the Job centre
    6) Dickson isnt the answer to all of our goalscoring prayers
    7) Pardew & Parkinson need a plan b&C every now and again
    8) Holland isnt young enough nor good enough to do the work of three men

I disagree with some of the comments about Varney. No succesfuil goalscorer has ever made it without decent supply and outside of Shelvey nobody played or tried a different pass.

Heard from a good source that the boy from Southend comes today and hopefully Bouazza can show more if he is played in his true position.

    ...............

A few weeks ago I was playing cricket - we lost the toss and fielded, we started well and took a couple of early wickets, then our opponent's number three/four bats put on a partnership and quickly knocked up around 50 runs. What did we do...we could have watched the game slip away and accepted the inevitable...instead we grafted away, offered plenty of vocal support to the bowlers, chased everything down in the field. Eventually we broke the partnership and rolled over the next few batsmen and then went on to win the match - in essence we created a situation where our opponents were under pressure, even though it was us who were struggling. A few weeks before we had the reverse situation - we batted first, lost a couple early wickets before our middle order got in grafted away. On that occasion our opponents started to crumble, arguing amongst themselves etc - even to the point where two players almost came to blows. A bit of pressure and they cracked and they had little or no team ethos behind them to draw on.

Team work isn't about solving every problem before hand - though that helps, but putting in the effort at the right moments and we the fans are a part of that. If we accept mediocrity, we'll get mediocity. If we get behind the team and are vocal when the team are trying to pull back a deficit then perhaps it'll encourage the team to produce that little bit extra that makes the difference. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I'm certain that negativity will invariably lead to a poor performance, while positivity can encourage and inspires. Given a choice I'd always opt to motivate and encourage than slag off, but there are those who feel differently and I'm sure there'll be the "I've paid my ten quid I'll do what I like" type response...
  • Come May we would have forgotten about last nights game when we're celebrating our return to the top flight on the back of an unbeaten 30 game streak!!

    Onwards and upwards.
  • reality check folks big time

i didnt go so my opinion is watered down however this is the 2nd game of the season it was in a competion that we can not be focused on (i am glad we are out)

we made 6 changes, we played semedo, youga out of position, we had moots, bassey at full back so the defence was seriously weakend,

Pards has given varney a chance last night to fill his boots to build up a players confidence who can not handle playing at a higher level imo it was the right decision as it is a less important game Varney hasnt done that the opo will now move to dicko against watford.

according to Gary Nelson last night and i tend to believe his views over most of the cack i have read on here

that yeovil had 3 oportunities 1 they score 1 youga blocked 1 went over apart from that they did nothing

we had 5 good chances before they scored, we had an excellent save made after they scored, we had all the attacking options which resulted in 15-18 shots on goal

i have said since the begining of the season i am worried about varney as he is not a striker he is a winger sell thomas play varney wide and go and beg borrow or buy a striker quickly, We need another centre half quickly Cranie i hear can play across the back 4 so could do, we need bailey to allow shelvey to do his thing shelvey will play in excess of 35 games this year he will have too

Shelvey (no one is saying he is the messiah pickwick) but the boy is hugely talented and just like there are some who want pards to fail there are some who would like nothing better than shelvey to not suceed, fortunatly we have a 16 yr old who is going to be the bollox. His touch and vision (nelses words not mine) are head and shoulders above most on that pitch last night, again his dead balls were spot on nelses views again, so you are going to here his name touted on here and else where so deal with it not gripe about it sit back and enjoy the kid playing for our team before he moves off to bigger and better things

GH i agree there are more issues than booing but booing is a disease that has got into footie and needs to be addressed and especially if it happened with a team that included 10 outfield players whos avg age is 22 is completely uncalled for and those that did it should be ashamed of themselves.

get a grip folks last nite did not matter

  • racism isnt a disease either fishnets

booing imo opinion is a disease that has got into football just as you feel obviously racism is a disease that has entered society
  • Booing is a disease?...like racism?....get a fooking grip...

    .........

Yep, NLA is right, too bad you can't understand the point he's making.
  • yes booooooooooooooooooo on here not at the game that would make more sense you hit the nail right on the head
  • Whats everyone on about anyway regarding the result 7 other championship clubs got knocked out didnt they.

Damn it Im starting to sound like Murray Mint !!!
  • what would the real point of been to stay in the competion once forts got injured it shows that it is an extra game and distraction not needed, yes it would have been nice to get a run in it but our cup record is so shite what would we have gained, it was a game to look at players and get others experience
  • didn't see the game; was watching SUPERKENT at Canterbury.
Not sure what the biggest farce was, us at the Valley or the wind blowing at 28mph so the floodlights couldn't be used.
And how is Richard Illingworth an umpire ?
  • It doesn't help, does it?

I can't recall a game ever where booing was the inspiration. It didn't help last night, either.

It just breeds negativity and despair.
    That's the disease.
  • Yes it's worrying we lost but with our threadbare squad it's probably a bonus that we're out as less chance of injuries and suspensions now.
And for those who've said we need the money from a cup run, with the poor attendances that the league cup attracts, i don't see many teams making much money from the cup unless they get Man Utd or Arsenal away.
Even when we were in the top flight and doing well, we were still total sh*t in the cups. So what's new.
  • And i saw a commetn earlier that we havent got out in the first round for 11 years.

Maybe thats because we played in the Premiership and never played in the first rounf for the majority of those 11 years...

I'm really not bothered - i checked the score at half time and full time then watched Secret Millionaire.

Don't consider myself a plastic, and although i'm disappointed can't say its going to ruin my season. 3 points at Vicarage Road will mkae this seem like a distant memory.

    Come on you reds.
  • Ill boo if i want. The fact that i dont , dosnt mean i cant. Untill its banned or taxed, i may choose to boo or not.

Its not a "new thing" as such i remember going with my Dad to games donkeys years back and the guy next to us slagging off the team every game for the whole 90 mins. I often thought "why does he come to the games". In my 4 decades of watching this outfit we have always had those types of people who seem to only be there to slag the team. Never understood it and never will.

"last night dosnt matter" ooooooooooo yes it does. It matters to the people who made the effort to go (i wasnt one) It matters because we lost to a lower league team -- AGAIN. It matters because one of our two c/backs got injured.

If it dosnt matter then make it free to get in or £1 on the door.

At least we didnt have to listen to Curbs telling us "this really matters, and why shouldnt it be us" before puting out a reserve team.
