  • [cite]Posted By: Ketman[/cite]I am going out tonight for my last long midweek run & will do a long Sunday morning one at the weekend as have never run in the morning in all my four months training, should be nice with a hangover.
[cite]Posted By: Curb_It[/cite]no it means slow up... i will do two smal runs next week! so butt out!
    how's your training coming?

I'm a bit confused with all this advice I've been given, should I have already done my last long run before the 5th? or should this sunday be the last one I do before the big day? I believe that if I sit it out and dont do a longish run this weekend I will lose my already low fitness level, and yes I think I am older than Henry so forgive me for being easily confused (not in a Al Murray easily confused sort of way)
  • i'm yet to even come close to a long run, so i'm ignoring all advice !
  • according to the training plan. we should have done our last longest longest one last weekend with a 70 min run coming this saturday. since i have only vaguely kept to the training plan im going to do a long one tonight and thursday and 70 mins on saturday.
  • my view would be that the last long run you do should be around 2 weeks before the race. This week if you have been doing over ten miles I would cut back to around 6-8 (personally i am doing around 6/7 miles), it should also be slower than normal as well.

during the week leading up to it I would do 2 or 3 runs of around 20minutes or so, with the last one the day before, but taken very very easy. although these runs are mainly to keep your brain used to you running that for any actual fitness reason.
  • Well as predicted, I've come down with the dreaded man flu, which I have absolutely no doubt has been passed on to me by our Australian temp. I feel like shite, cant breathe and didnt get a wink of sleep last night. So much for me trying to do another 10 miler tonight as scheduled.

you can still run with a cold in my experience. The general rule of thumb is that if the problems are all above the neck (sore throat, sneezing that sort of thing) then you should be okay to run but take it easy and stop if you feel worse. Anything below the neck just rest up.
  • I'm with Afka on this as i havent got near a long run yet (well, past 7 1/2 - 8 miles anyway), will see how i do tonight. was going to have a long Run Sunday morning.
  • Thanks for that everyone, one things for sure since the course has been finalised the small groups of runners in the Hillreach/charlton park areas appears to have multiplied, I have driven that route half a dozen times in the course of a days work since sunday, and they are everywhere.
  • 7 miles in 75 mins tonight (with a five min walk in the middle.

My first run due to holiday since Sept 3rd, felt really good, much better than i expected to. Was really looking forward to mapping it after, but was then gutted it was only 7 miles ! Felt at least a mile or so more.

My excitement has now faded quickly. I still realistically need to double this run within a week and a half, and i haven't run any form of hill at all..... :-(

And my first experience with chaffed nipples tonight as well. Ouch !!
  • Managed my longest run last night. 9.2 miles in 87 mins. struggled like mad for the first two but then seemed to kick in, feel like afka on this as am a bit worried about the extra distance.
on another note, there are some fcuking tossers out there. I was running along the main round between Chislehurst and Sidcup when 4 prats in a little Nova type car threw a bottle at me, it hit my shoulder then the fence next to me and shattered showering glass all over me. Could have been quite serious and If it wasnt around the 7 mile mark i would have been able to chase after them ;o)

Sorry mate but that made me laugh!

A few of my mates (two of who post on here) caught up with a car that had done a similar thing and got stuck in traffic further up the road. Won't go into details but I don't think the blokes ever did it again!
  • Sorry to hear that GHE, last thing you need.

A few weeks ago i had a car slow right down beside me, the someone screamed out the window 'MOVE IT YOU FAT BASTARD'. Frightened the life out of me, but turned round to see it was my mate Cheesey almost having a fit with laughter. Gut also took a few sly pics on his phone.
  • I think thas shit GHE. What bell ends.

I ran last night and i really didnt want to as was tired and legs hurt and i wish i handt as disillusioned now. I started at the horse and groom, ran down to woolwich - turned straight into John Wilson Street (rather than do that little bit more) and up there and on to Ha Ha road.... i was struggling away. Down repository lane, then onto evil Hill Reach... which i managed but by the time i got to victoria way - there was nothing left so i turned off and went home. Think it was about 5 miles or so. but i was running faster than i normally would.

Feck me there are three inclines in that part of woolwich. I think im going to have to walk hill reach just to try and get through. at least after that its all flat apart from greenwich park which is downhill.

I would suggest if you get a chance to run that bit beforehand do so.
  • My man flu is getting worse. I felt shattered walking just half a mile from Stepney Green tube to the office this morning. Still cant breathe but at least I managed a few hours sleep last night.

I'm dosed up on sudafed and paracetomols and hopefully it will pass sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, just discovered my Asthma pump had died on me and will have to pay a trip to the GP to get another one sorted otherwise I'll be in severe difficulty trying to run without it.
  • Went out last night, the weather was dismal, rain then driving wind which always seems to be against you. Struggled at a pretty woeful pace for first three miles into a head wind then managed to pick it up a bit when wind died down a bit, managed 10 miles in 79 minutes although left hamstring was pretty tight all the way round which is a concern for the race. Not playing football anymore until after race now which should help.
  • i did hardly anything yesterday, a nice steady 3miles in around 22mins, will do similar tomorrow with some hills thrown in for good measure around the middle of the run.

as for local git monkeys throwing stuff. It happens, I tend to run in the mornings so get less of it, but when I was running a lot when younger I used to get it a fair bit. The coash of the group I trained with used to drive round in his car following us on our longer runs and would quite often end up chasing these idiots in his car when it happened.
  • Kigelia / others, advice please.

Last night was the longest i have managed, 7 miles. I desperately want to try and get a 9-10 mile run in this weekend to give myself the confidence i can get round. I'm pretty sore this morning, am i best doing nothing till Sat morning, then aim for a ten miler ? After that, i was planning to ease back to a 2 / 3 miler on Wednesday and Friday next week to keep ticking over.

Does that seem a sensible plan ? I need to get a distance run in, and i also need to do a run on Sat morning, as i've never run in the morning and think that is important.
  • I am doing a long run Sunday morning Smudge as I have not done a morning run yet, Don't see it being a problem a week before the race.

Personally, I would say knowing you have manged 7 miles (about 60% of the distance) I am confident you will get round. Anythin you do now will not physically help you that much so I would caution against doing you longest run at all this close to the event.

If you did alternate bouts of 10mins running, 5 mins walking on the day you should get round without too many drama's.

If you do a big run this weekend you risk destroying yourself before the big day. I would say if the most you have done is 7 miles or so then I would limit myself to around 5 miles at the weekend. If you want to do that as well as a saturday morning run then I would say do a 2-3 miles on the saturday morning at a very steady pace.

Any training now is really psychological rather than physical. The aim is to keep your legs ticking over rather than trying to work your body hard.
  • AFKA, seriously mate, you'll be absolutely fine. If you can do 7 miles in 75 mins, which is pretty quick pace, you could always think about going a little slower to conserve your energy to give you a some added confidence. If I can shrug this man flu off, I'll come out with you on Saturday if you like for the moral support.

  • Im going to have to go slower than i did last night. Felt crap.

I would try and long run sunday morning Dan. just to give yourself a bit more confidence. Or have you a big night planned sat night?

You right, i need the confidence. I see Kigelia's point, but psychological i still need to find an extra 6 miles, which is a lot ! I've only ever done three runs over 3.5 miles, and the most i've run without stopping and walking is 45 mins.

I want to go Sat morning rather than sunday as i'm out sat night (though not drinking now ahead of the race, apart from pre-palace), plus i have my football team sunday morning.
  • i also would advise against at this stage trying to beat what you have already done as could end up putting you on a downer so close to the date.
Just enjoy the day run a bit and walk a bit we will all do it one way or a other and help each other its not a race for most of us.
At the end of the day 13.2 miles is good distance if walked a bit and ran a bit! just enjoy the day and think about that cold pint
  • and on taverns point about cold pint, have we decided where we are having said pint yet?
  • how about the anchor?
  • its only about 4 miles from the dome and we could all jog it that way we would have ended up doing 17.2 miles!lol
  • Anchor is looking the best option at the moment. No point in opening up Bartrams just for a few of us.
  • Anchor sounds great to me although a car back sounds more my plan tavern :o)
how are others getting to the start line, i am travelling from Sidcup and can give a couple a lift.
  • I suspect I will be getting the train to charlton and then bus from there.
  • Car Park 1 is being used for competitors at a rate of £5 between 8am and 4pm.

I've emailed the info address to find out if any shower facilities are available.
